Newsletter 9 Week ending 9th November 2018
Believe
you can
achieve!
Dear Parents and Carers,
Once again we have had a wonderful week of learning both in and out of school. Today I was privileged to
join Year 6 St Teresa’s Class as they took part in the Cranleigh Schools’ Peace Walk. If you have the
opportunity to visit the Cranleigh Centenary memorial garden at Snoxhall this weekend you will see that it
commemorates the 415 soldiers from Cranleigh who have lost their lives over the last 100 years through
conflict. You will also see our fabulous poppies on display.
Well done to Charlie and Joseph who have won the Cranleigh Schools’ poetry competition and have been
asked to read their poem at the war memorial on Sunday. Thank you to Reverend Roy for joining our
celebration assembly and presenting them with their prize. During our assembly we also had a visit from Mr
Deale from the Royal British Legion who talked to the children about the importance of the Royal British
Legion and the work that they do and how important it is to commemorate the end of World War One.
Thank you to all of the children who have supported their appeal this year and bought poppies.
This week in our liturgies we remember all those affected by war and the loss of loved ones.
Wishing you all a wonderful autumnal weekend.
Natalie McCarthy
Welcome from Xavier
We were delighted to officially welcome St Cuthbert Mayne into the Xavier Catholic
Education Trust on 1st November. Xavier CET supports a family of Catholic schools
from across Surrey to work together in collaboration to provide the best possible
education for all the children in our care.
Staff from the central team at Xavier have already been working closely with the school over recent months
and we are now looking forward to the whole community benefitting from the support and collaborative
opportunities that the Trust will provide.
Despite all the good work that Mrs McCarthy and the team have done so far, there are still plenty of
challenges ahead, not least in ensuring that the school is able to recruit the best teachers and support staff
going forward and in regaining the school’s reputation for being the number one choice for families in
Cranleigh and the surrounding area.
We are however confident, given both the school has to offer: delightful children, hardworking staff,
supportive families, governors and the parish and the Trust’s expertise that St. Cuthbert Mayne will be a
centre of excellent Catholic education going forward. Exciting times ahead!

Year 5 St Catherine’s Class Remember
Year 5 recently visited Cranleigh War Me-
morial as part of their World War II topic.
While there, we kept a minute’s silence.
Afterwards, we wrote reflections on our
visit. Joseph wrote, “I thought about their
families and how sad they must have
been. It made me think that war is the
worst thing ever to happen to the world.”
Jack wrote, “I felt so sad that all these
people in Cranleigh died to help our
country win the war so I think they must
have had a lot of guts and bravery to
even set foot on that battlefield. I am
very proud that people actually remem-
ber them with all their hearts and built a
war memorial for this village.”
Along with other schools in the village, Key Stage 2
have made poppies for the Centenary Garden at Snox-
all Field. On the back of the plates the children have
written names from the Cranleigh War Memorial.
trees.
Year 6 St Teresa’s Class Remember
Today, Year 6 St Teresa’s Class braved the small discomfort of the rain to join in with the Cranleigh Schools’
Peace Walk.
During the services and the walk children were asked to make two promises. The first “ We Will Remember”
and the second “We will be peacemakers in our everyday lives.”.
We listened to prayers, poems and the last post which was played on the trumpet as we were asked to
honour those who had fallen to bring us peace. The emphasis was very much on the future and how children
need to learn from the mistakes of the past and become a generation of people who were peaceful. The
children were visibly moved by the number of people who have lost their lives from their own villages in the
last 100 years.
Both Miss Smyth and I were very proud of how the children conducted themselves and also the thoughtful
discussions that were had during the walk.
It is a beautiful
garden and I would
highly recommend a
visit to it with your
children to see the
poppies before the
rain gets the better
of them.
Celebration of Arts in Cranleigh
‘A Celebration of the Arts in Cranleigh’s Schools’ which is being held by the Cranleigh Arts Society this evening from 7pm. Thank you to all of our children who are attending.
Thank you to Mrs Woodhams for co-ordinating this event and thank you to all of the children who have supplied the fantastic art work.
Romanian Shoe Box Appeal
We are once again supporting the Romanian Shoe Box appeal 2018 for deprived and disabled
children. We hope that all families will support this worthy cause. Shoe boxes should be returned to
school on Monday 19th November ready for collection.
Running total 14.
Happiness and Showing Respect
It is always great to see spontaneous examples of children
living out our school values.
Next week we will be building on this value and also focus
on being peacemakers in our homes and school during
Anti-bullying Week.
Please remember to wear odd socks on Monday.
Reception St David’s Class
Remember
Thank you to St David’s Class for this
fabulous school display
commemorating Remembrance Day
2018.
Sports leaders
At St Cuthbert Mayne we understand the important part that PE and
sport plays in keeping us fit and healthy and ready to learn.
Our pupils take part in the daily mile and we have several coaches
enhancing PE and sport in our school and providing support and training
for our teachers.
In addition to this pupils in Year 6 have recently had the opportunity to
be a Sports Crew member. Pupils have had to apply for this role. Their
role is to lead and inspire our pupils to develop a love of being active.
After having recently attended specific leadership training with Active Surrey at Broadwater School,
they will soon be organising an Intra school Mini Mile competition in December and will be leading
activities at playtime, as well as meeting once every half term to identify ways of improving PE and
sport in our school.
In 2018-19 our Sports Crew members are: Ella M, Isobel M, Emily W, and Kazyah.
Year 3 Tillingbourne Tournament
Well done to our Year 3 footballers for taking part

Parent Helpers and Volunteers
A very special thank you to all parents and staff who have helped out and shown their support. It has been a very ‘active’
start to the school year and November is proving to be a busy month with numerous sporting opportunities on offer.
Without you these events could not take place and I greatly appreciate all your support and enthusiasm.
Swimming Trials
Well done to all of our children who took part in the swimming trials last Sunday. This Sunday we will be holding our
second school swimming trials at Cranleigh Leisure Centre from 3.30-4.30pm for all Year 3-6 interested pupils. We look
forward to welcoming you. Selections were made and letters sent out on Monday 5th November to those individuals
who have been selected to attended a further training session on Sunday 11th November before representing the school
at the upcoming District Schools Swimming Gala on Sunday 18th November.
Best of luck to everyone and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

A book for my birthday
Please can I thank parents and carers for
their generosity around children’s
birthdays. However, in line with Healthy
Schools and concerns raised by our
parents, it is our policy not to give out
sweets at birthday times.
Please can I encourage you to buy a book
for the class library instead.
NO MORE NUTS PLEASE
Thank you for supporting this and ensuring that
only fruit and vegetables are allowed for break time
snacks. Children in St David’s, St Andrew’s and St
Patrick’s class are provided with a fruit snack and
do not need to bring anything in addition with them
to school. Children in Key Stage Two should only
bring in fruit or vegetables as a snack.
Cross Country
Good luck to all our runners. I hope that
you will see the benefit of your daily mile
training in your running.
Thank you to Mrs Singleton for training
the children and to parents for
supporting this event. We are still short
of a few Year 6 runners so if anyone is
free tomorrow please come along.
Dear Parents,
It’s an exciting time of year at school with the lead up to Christmas and we
have many fundraising activities happening at the moment through the

es, the school receives money for each purchase you make.
