Rose Brigidear, our much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left this earth at the age of 94 years. She was born on July 15, 1920, to George and Dora Harasen (nee Poroznuk). Rose was predeceased by her husband, Peter Brigidear (in November, 2011); her parents; her brothers, James, Walter and Thomas; and sisters, Mary, Rose and Anna. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Diana (Brian) Schwab and Arlene (Peter) Predinchuk; grandchildren, Melanie Christopherson and Kevin Schwab; great- grandsons, Bailey and Connor Christopherson; sister, Doris; sister-in-law, Hazel and numerous nieces and nephews. Rose attended Scotland School (near Wroxton, SK) until she completed her Grade 11. She then left school to work on

the family farm. On November 23, 1947, Rose married her long-time sweetheart, Peter Brigidear. Rose and Peter were a team for 64 years, working hard on the farm the Brigidear’s homesteaded, near Calder, SK. In April, 1985, Rose and Peter retired to Yorkton, to the home they enjoyed until Peter’s passing. In December, 2011, Rose moved to Dove House in Regina. Rose enjoyed her life on the farm. Work was hard, but rewarding. She loved her “girls” (the cows) and each summer spent many hours tending her huge garden. She was a gifted baker, frequently creating new prize recipes with ingredients she had on hand and always ready to share - at bake sales, at church and school functions, for her family and for the neighbour’s children! She was also accomplished at “fancy work” - especially crocheting. Rose had two main priorities; her family and her church. She was always there to encourage her family, to cheer on their accomplishments, listen to their troubles, but never to interfere. She loved children and was very happy to welcome her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rose was a deeply religious person; even in her final days, expressing gratitude to God, for the life she had been given. She was always ready to assist at church - at fundraisers, as Treasurer in Calder and as Secretary in Yorkton. When Rose and Peter first retired, they joined volunteer crews who served at functions at St. Mary’s Cultural Centre and in their later years, were choir members at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The family are grateful for the love and excellent care that Rose received at Dove House. Prayers were held on Friday, January 2, 2015 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Saturday, January 3, 2015 from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK. Both services were officiated by Father Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. and the responses were led by Mr. Ed Pindus assisted by members of the Yorkton Ukrainian Catholic Choir. The Epistle was read by Rose’s grandson, Kevin Schwab and the Cross Bearer was her granddaughter, Melanie Christopherson. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Kevin Schwab, Brian Schwab, Owen Christopherson, Bailey Christopherson, Glen Yaroski and Bernard Brigidear serving as the casket bearers. The Honourary Pallbearers were Rose’s great-grandson, Connor Christopherson and her sister, Doris Derbowka. On May 18, 1947, he married Emily Ostafie and together they raised their family and resided on the homestead in Mazeppa until July 2014. Victor loved to farm with his brother, John and then with his son, Orest. He inherited his father’s blacksmith skills and often made his own parts and could fix nearly anything. He loved to socialize with friends and neighbours on the weekends and many heated games of Canasta took place. Everyone was always welcome into the Kyba home for coffee and a visit. He was the first child of 10 born to Robert Albert “Bert” and Anne Jean (nee Thompson) Brears. Lew was brought into this world by a mid-wife, Mrs. Riddy. He attended Clumber School, completing Grade 8, before he was taken out of school to help with the farm work. At 9 years old, Lew was featured in a Western Producer article as being the youngest person to deliver grain to the Bredenbury elevator. As a young man, Lew left the home farm and went to work on the Don Thompson farm for a time. He then went “up north” to work on the rigs, eventually advancing his employ- ment to work for M.R. LIMITED TIME

OFFERPlan Number 9-3-217THREE BEDROOM

FAMILY HOMEThe exterior finishes

on this three-bedroom family home, designed especially for a narrow lot, lend it an arts-and-craft charm that will make it an asset to any neighbourhood.

Entry is at the side of the home, via a covered porch and into the foyer. The great room complex is directly ahead, past a coat closet on the left and the staircase to the second floor on the right. A doorway to the double garage is also to the right.

A gas fireplace in the great room is located so it will send it warmth into the dining area and kitchen. The dining room, which flows into the great room, enjoys access through sliding doors to a deck and the back garden beyond.

The kitchen ‘s U-shaped counter config-uration spells efficiency for the cook, and natu-ral light will come in the window near the double sink. Access to the laun-dry room is through the

kitchen.Nearby is a den that

could double as a guest room. Outside the den is a storage closet for clean-ing materials, and across from it is a two-piece powder room.

Upstairs, the master bedroom occupies the back of the home for privacy, and includes a niche with a built-in desk. The large en-suite includes an oval soaker tub for a touch of luxury, as well as a shower stall. A walk-in closet com-pletes the layout.

The two second-ary bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom. Bedroom No. 3 occupies a bayed-out space with dormer windows over-looking the front garden. A handy desk is located on the landing, near the linen closet.

On the exterior, hori-zontal siding and deco-rate woodwork enliven the facade, together with wood pilasters and paint-ed woodwork around the partly-mullioned win-dows.

This home measures 25 feet wide by 50 feet

deep, for a total of 1,753 square feet. Ceilings rise to nine feet throughout the main floor.

Plans for design 9-3-217 are available for $695 (set of 5), $790(set of 8) and $866 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges.

Our 45TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Make all cheque and money orders payable to “Jenish House Design Ltd.” and mail to:

Eating important to diabetes

Highway work of 2014 reviewed

In recognition of World Diabetes Day, CanolaInfo and the Mexican Diabetes Federation (Federacion Mexicana de Diabetes or FMD) joined efforts to inform people about the importance of consuming a daily, healthy break-fast and the right types of fat to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). People with dia-betes are especially at risk for this disease.

“Partnerships with organizations such as FMD play an important role in building markets for Canadian canola by promoting the virtues of canola oil with consum-ers,” says Bruce Jowett, VP Market Development with the Canola Council of Canada. “CVD and diabetes are primary

health concerns among the Mexican population and we are working to raise awareness that can-ola oil is a heart-healthy fat that can help reduce these risks.”

Jowett noted that a recent Mexican consum-er study revealed that awareness of canola oil has reached 40 percent – up from 9 percent just two years ago. “We are pleased with the results so far and are continuing to align with the health and nutrition community to engage consumers in key export markets,” says Jowett.

As part of the 2014 World Diabetes Day campaign, FMD nutri-tionists are joining the International Diabetes

Federation in saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day. “Correct eating begins with breakfast,” both organizations say, and a healthy lifestyle should also include a daily exercise routine of 30 to 60 minutes.

Debby Braun, con-sulting dietitian to the Mexican Olympic Committee, added that choosing the right types of fat is essential to have a balanced and healthy diet. In Mexico, the use of cooking oil is frequent in homes and restau-rants, so it’s important to choose a healthy type of oil.

“The number of people with cardio-vascular disease is on

the rise, but we can help protect our hearts with simple changes such as replacing saturated fat found in butter and lard with healthy vegetable oils like canola oil that contain mono- and poly-unsaturated fats,” Braun said. “These oils can help reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.”

Braun noted that can-ola oil has the least satur-ated fat – only 7 percent – of all common cook-ing oils. It is also a good source of omega-3 and omega-6 fats, which are considered “essential” because the body cannot produce them on its own. Canola oil contains vita-mins E and K as well.

Scientific studies have shown that canola oil can

help control blood sugar in people with type 2 dia-betes on a low-glycemic index diet as well as reduce abdominal fat in people at risk of pre-dia-betes. Other studies have shown that as little as 1.5 tablespoons of canola oil per day in place of satur-ated fat can help reduce the risk of heart disease. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized in 2006 a qualified health claim for canola oil related to this benefit.

“Using canola oil is a simple way to help pro-tect the heart for only a few cents a day,” Braun concluded. “It is an eco-nomic option to prepare dishes with great flavor while contributing to a healthy diet. Look for

vegetable oil labels that say ‘100 percent canolaoil’ to make a healthypurchase for the heart.”

CanolaInfo is the oil promotion program ofthe Canola Council of Canada (CCC). The CCC isa full value chain organ-ization representing can-ola growers, value added processors, life science companies and export-ers. Keep it Coming 2025is the strategic plan to ensure the canola indus-try’s continued growth, demand, stability and success – achieving 52 bushels per acre to meet global market demand of 26 million metric tonnes by the year 2025.

Like many others at this time of year, the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is reflect-ing on the challenges and successes of another year gone.

“Our government rec-ognizes the importance of safe and efficient high-ways to the people of the province,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Nancy Heppner said. “A solid transportation system is the founda-tion of our plan to grow Saskatchewan’s economy and improve the qual-ity of life for all our cit-izens.”

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure’s work

in 2014 focused on improving the condi-tion and sustainability of Saskatchewan’s 26,000 km highway system. The ministry also started, completed and con-tinued the planning for a number of major projects that support the prov-ince’s continued popu-lation growth. And once again, ministry crews responded to extreme weather and natural dis-asters.

Highlights of 2014 include:

Building and M a i n t a i n i n g S a s k a t c h e w a n ’ s Highways – more than 430 km of major high-way upgrades, 425 km of repaving, 38 bridge pro-jects and 323 culvert pro-jects were completed or underway in 2014.

Ministry crews were challenged to maintain Saskatchewan’s high-

ways during one of the worst winters on record.

Flooding - serious flooding hit large parts of central, east cen-tral and southeastern Saskatchewan in early July. Roads and bridges were washed away and as many as 25 sections of highway were closed during the worst of the flooding.

Attracting federal funding – over the next

few years, federal fund-ing announced in 2014 will see more than $225 million go toward pro-jects that reduce conges-tion and improve safety on some of our busiest highways including Highway 7, Highway 16 and the Regina Bypass.

St. Louis Bridge - the new St. Louis Bridge opened to traffic in October, creating a 683 km primary weight cor-ridor from Assiniboia to

La Ronge.

“I also want to thank the people of Saskatchewan for their patience and under-standing through thingslike flood repairs andtraffic delays associated with road work and con-struction,” Heppner said.

The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) has initiated a research project to iden-tify and validate four critical roles that span all commodities within agriculture to clarify skill requirements and assist stakeholders in addressing the skills and labour shortages facing agriculture now and in the future.

The National A g r i c u l t u r a l Occupational Framework and Labour Market Support (NAOF) project will develop standard-ized descriptions of farm jobs from the entry to manager levels across 10 commodity areas includ-ing: aquaculture; cattle (beef/dairy); poultry and eggs; crops; swine; other animals; field fruit and vegetables; tree fruit and vines; greenhouse, nurs-ery, floriculture and sod; and other agriculture.

This expanded job data will then be con-verted into a set of tools that connect job and youth internship seekers with farms that are hir-ing; help farm workers to identify and access train-ing required for career advancement; and help education providers to design training curricu-lum that best addresses agriculture industry

needs.“This is a unique

opportunity for Canadian producers to make their labour needs known and to shape the future of the farm labour system in Canada,” explained Portia Macdonald-Dewhirst, Executive Director of the Council. “The NAOF project will create a holistic view of the Canadian agricul-tural labour industry and will help shape govern-

ment policies, education and training over the next 10 years. Ultimately, this will help produ-cers to more effectively access, train and retain workers.”

The research will be conducted via 50 focus groups that will be held across Canada between now and March 2016. The focus groups will examine and identify the knowledge, skills and abilities needed by farm

workers to do the work. From there, policies and programs will be creat-ed to fill the identified needs. .

All producers are encouraged to partici-pate and can indicate their interest by con-tacting Jade Reeve, NAOF Project Manager at [email protected]. Travel and related expenses to attend the focus groups will be pro-vided.

Funded by theGovernment of Canada’s Sectoral InitiativesProgram, the Council is collaborating on this three-year project withfederal and provincial government depart-ments, over thirty of Canada’s leading agri-cultural organizations, and agricultural colleges and training providers to ensure that the needs of industry are fully under-stood and addressed.
