  • The Green Party believes in a fairer society for everyone within the limits of the natural environment we all depend on. Our vision for the future of York is for it to be a city where:

    residents are empowered in decision-making - the right to directly question councillors and an end to authoritarian Cabinet government;

    new residents are welcomed, the most vulnerable are protected and low income and inequality is tackled - the Living Wage and the restoration of local services;

    diverse independent local businesses are supported - rate relief and better use of council-owned properties, offering cheaper rent;

    affordable housing and green jobs are invested in - developing green construction skills and reducing fuel poverty;

    there is less traffic, better transport and healthy residents - a free city centre shuttle bus, better evening buses and much more car-sharing;

    natural limits are not exceeded - opposing excessive housing numbers in the Local Plan, putting sustainability at the core with local energy and food production, flood prevention and increased recycling, waste reduction and repair.

    Our general electioncandidates

    Electing Greens matters - and makes a difference!

    Our vision for a better and brighter York

    The time has come for a very different kind of politics. The so-called main parties offer very little between them, other than business as usual.

    In York, the Green Party is standing general election candidates in York Central and York Outer and a full slate of 47 candidates for the local elections.

    We are polling level or higher than the Liberal Democrats for the general election and have high hopes of electing more MPs to join Caroline Lucas in the Commons. At the least, a high Green vote will put a lot of pressure on the other parties to take note of our policies for open government, fairness and sustainability. More Green MPs could play a key role in a hung Parliament.

    In York, residents gave the Green Party 16% of the vote in last years European elections (higher in York Central) our largest vote in Yorkshire.

    The Greens have had two councillors in Fishergate since 2003. Residents appreciate their consistent hard work and approachability, having re-elected Greens in 2007 and 2011.

    Ginnie Shaw is our general election candidate for York Outer. A long-time member of the Green Party, she has lived in York for over 20 years. She came second in Clifton ward in 2007 and 2011 and now lives in Osbaldwick. She chaired a local housing associ-ation for 13 years and is also a trustee of York Racial Equality Network. As Director of a national housing and disa-bility charity, she co-chaired the successful campaign for disabled childrens housing rights. She says Im standing because I believe that the words green, sustainable, inclusive, affordable and accessible must be followed up with effective action to secure a decent future for our children and grandchildren.

    Jonathan Tyler is our general election candidate for York Central. A founding member of the Party (then called the Ecology Party) in 1976, he is a railwayman by profession and moved to York in 1987. He chaired the York Environment Forum for 6 years. He says the Greens are now the only organised political party with

    the imagination to tackle both the enormous risks to human survival and an unfair economic system. Green Party policies on a Living Wage for all, high quality public transport, protecting the NHS and clean energy really do promote the common good rather than the interests of a few.

    Following a series of defections from the other parties, the Council is now hung and could easily still be so after the May local elections. More Green Party councillors would have a lot of influence.

    In the last council elections in 2011, as well as holding Fishergate, Greens came second in four other wards Micklegate, Guildhall, Clifton and Heslington. With your support we have a real chance of electing more Green councillors in 2015.
