The Boy Who Grew Dragons Chapter 10

Why You Should Never Keep A Dragon In Your Rucksack

I’m not known for my brilliant concentration in class. In fact Miss Logan has repeatedly said

she wished there was an Olympic medal for daydreaming because I’d win gold. By the time I’d

absent-mindedly glued Amira’s sleeve to the table and painted stripes across Seb’s left hand,

it wasn’t just Miss Logan raising her eyebrows. But I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t stop thinking

about what Flicker was doing and if I’d been right to leave him alone at home. It was then

that I noticed Ted’s nose wrinkling. He leaned closer. Was he smelling me?

I edged away, giving my arm a sniff and scanning my clothes, wondering if I’d got so used to

the whiff of dragon poo that I hadn’t noticed I’d got some on me.

“Dude, what is with you today?” Kai whispered. “You’re being off-the-scale weird”.

But before I had the chance to blame any rouge tortoises Mr Firth strode into the

classroom.

“Ready for the rounders competition, Miss Logan?” he bellowed. “We’ve been looking forward

to this all term. I hope you’ve had your class working on their skills after last terms netball

fiasco?”

Miss Logan smiled serenely.

“I think we’re ready for you Mr Firth”.

“Oh I doubt than, Miss Logan, but I suppose we must admire your optimism. Of course, my lot

depend on ability more than wishful thinking. Anyway, the match has been scheduled for 2pm

I’ll be taking lightning class out for a warm-up before hand. You’re welcome to join us, if you

don’t think we’ll scare the opposition.”

From the look he gave us when he said ‘opposition’ it was clear he didn’t think we qualified as

a serious threat. He didn’t throw back his head like some dastardly villain and scoff outright,

but we all knew Mr Firth thought his class was going to wipe the floor with us. And even Miss

Logan didn’t look quite so serene after he’d left.

I could tell Ted, Kat and Kai wanted to quiz me properly when we were on our way out of

class, so I hung on behind, pretending I’d lost my pen under the table. Part of me would have

liked to tell them everything, but another part wanted to keep Flicker all to myself. I’d never

had anything so cool as Flicker before and I wasn’t sure I was ready to share hm. Not yet.

But I was beginning to realise that, with my terrible lying skills, keeping him a secret might

not be as easy as I had thought. The exploding poo didn’t help either. It happened while we

were getting into our PE kits. I lifted out my shorts, and my heart sank. There were dark

scorch marks across the bum. But it was the smell that everyone else noticed first. One of

Flicker’s dried-up poos had exploded, covering every inch of the bag. Liam screwed up his

nose.

Page 4: Year 4 Home Learning Pack 8...You awake to find your shelter has kept you dry and warm for the night. You head off to the You head off to the shoreline in search of fish and to see

“Ew, miss, something smells.” He looked in y direction. “And I think it might be coming from

over there.”

Everyone turned to look at me. It was one of those times you wish you had a pop-up black

hole in your pocket, ready to swallow you up.

“I think Tomas has had an accident, miss,” he said pretending to whisper behind his hand but

actually saying it loud enough for class 3 to hear. Class 3 were two doors away. Liam was just

loving this. I looked to Ted and Kai but even they were backing away. I stuffed the shorts

back inside my bag, cringing. While the rest of the class bundled out towards the field I was

sent to lost property to find some spare kit. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I’d had a

different surname, but as it was, it was like handing Liam a free gift. That is me stuck with

’Whiffy Liffy’ for the rest of my life.

On Mondays Grandad picked me up from school. But when he saw me and asked how my day

had been I just shrugged. I couldn’t exactly tell him about the dragon-poo incident, and we’d

lost so spectacularly I the rounders match I just wanted to forget the whole day.

“I’ve been thinking about the garden,” Grandad said. “We need to work out what’s going

where. Got to get the right conditions for each plant or they won’t thrive. What do you say?

Fancy coming over and helping me plan it out?”

“Er… Can I come tomorrow?” I said, thinking about how I really just wanted to get home to

Flicker.

As we walked through the park, Grandad started telling me about how we were going to mark

out the garden into areas. But I was too distracted to listen properly. I kept thinking about

the burst dragons fruits I had seen under the tree. Had more dragons really hatched? Could

there be six dragons hiding out in our town? It seemed so unlikely. I mean, with the amount

of mess my one little dragon was wreaking, if there was a whole pack of them out there,

surely the news would be full of explosions and unexplained fires? People noticed stuff like

that, didn’t they?

The nagging feeling I’d had during lessons grew even worse the closer I got to home. I

started walking more quickly, my brain going over and over everything I’d done that morning.

And then it landed on me like a cosmic cow-pat- the thing I hadn’t done. I grabbed the front-

door key from Grandad’s hand and ran, my panic rising. Because the one thing I’d forgotten

to do was close my bedroom window! At home, my fingers fumbled with the lock. I raced up

the stairs and flung open the door to my bedroom. When I looked inside it wasn’t the

shredded curtain, or the dragon poo on my computer, that I noticed first.

It was Flicker perched on the windowsill- at the open window. For two days I’d had the

coolest pet in the world. Two days. And now I was about to lose him. I stood frozen to the

spot.

“Tomas,” Grandad called, coming up the stairs, “you OK? Your pants on fire or summat?”

Page 5: Year 4 Home Learning Pack 8...You awake to find your shelter has kept you dry and warm for the night. You head off to the You head off to the shoreline in search of fish and to see

He paused halfway up and looked through the banister towards my door. I quickly pulled it

shut behind me.

“Nah, just checking Tomtom hadn’t got in my room again,” I said. But my voice was far too

squeaky to sound casual.

He looked about to quiz me again but then said, “Righto. I guess every man’s entitled to his

secrets- hey Chipstick?” He gave me a wink. “I’m just downstairs if you need me. I’ll put the

kettle on, shall I?”

“Yeah. Great. Thanks. Good idea,” I said, already disappearing back into my room.

With the bedroom door safely closed, I turned to face the little dragon. He was still on the

windowsill, staring up at the sky, his tail flicking from side to side.

“Flicker,” I whispered desperately.

He turned. I reached out a hand towards him, but he launched into the air. For a heart

stopping moment I watched him soar up, up and away. I’d only ever let him fly inside the

house. Now, sensing freedom, he was going to simply fly away and leave me. I raced over to

the window, my eyes locked on the little shape flitting about among the leaves of the trees

at the end of the garden. After a few agonising minutes he fluttered towards the tree in

next doors garden, the one nearest my window. He perched on a branch, his diamond eyes

fixed on me. I held my breath to see what he would do next. I waited, my heart ready to

crack. Willing him to come back to me. Terrified he wouldn’t.

Then, stretching his wings and with eyes still locked on mine, Flicker flew back in through the

window and settled on my shoulder. And it felt like a firework display was going off inside

me.

My Island Adventure

As a new day awakens on your island, you wander down the shore in a hopeful search for any

fish that may have been washed up during the fury of yet another night’s storm. With a

stroke of luck, you spot that indeed something has washed ashore! Your excitement grows as

you find that debris from the ship has been washed ashore, you decide to build a shelter.

Today’s diary entry- What can you see on the shoreline? What is your initial reaction?

Things to consider: What has washed up that is useful? How will it help you survive on the

island? How are you going to use these things? What items will you use to make a shelter?

Today we will look at how a vibration needs a way to travel to your ear so you can hear them

as noise. Today’s questions to consider:

Do you think that ‘stronger’ vibrations will produce a louder sound?

Do you think that a sound gets fainter the further away you are from where the vibration

started?

Take a look at these to help you with today’s questions before trying the activity. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgffr82/articles/zqtdpbk

My Island Adventure

You have spent your first night, since being marooned here on this island, in a shelter. How

was this different to the other nights you have spent curled up on the edge of the beach

striving to seek shelter beneath the tall trees that boarder the shoreline? How well did your

shelter hold up during the nightly gale force winds and monsoon rainfall?

Today’s diary entry- How well did you sleep and how do you feel about your new home? Are

there any changes you need to make today after your first night’s sleep or repairs that are

needed after the stormy weather?

My Island Adventure

You have spent a great deal of time exploring this island over the weeks and have discovered

animals and plants that you believe to be endemic (only found in this one place on earth).

These rare and exotic creatures and foliage are so amazing you think if you ever get off this

island, people wouldn’t believe you! You decide to write some descriptions of them.

Today’s diary entry- You spend the day roaming the island making notes of the different

animals, the plants, and their location on the island. You have studied what these animals eat

and how they behave. You have seen which plants are eaten by the animals and hose that are

left alone as they are dangerous- you even suspect some could be poisonous!

Things to consider-interesting adjectives, use the 5 senses to describe and use similes.

My Island Adventure

You awake to find your shelter has kept you dry and warm for the night. You head off to the

shoreline in search of fish and to see if anything else has washed up from the wreckage. You

are disappointed that you have no new discoveries today but convince yourself that it was a

mild night with no real winds so any remaining items/supplies from the ship may still be

floating in the desolate ocean, which surrounds you. Suddenly a burst of excitement sweeps

across you as you spot the mast of a ship cruising the high tide off shore. You quickly begin

to build a fire on the beach to signal to the ship...

However, you soon stop in your tracks as you discover the type of ship that looms on the

horizon, it bears a flag, which is clearly recognisable- it’s a pirate ship!

You realise that you might not be as safe as you thought on this island and begin to plan an

escape in fear that the pirates will land.

Today’s diary entry- How do you feel when you spot the pirate ship on the horizon? How do

you intent to make your escape? What could you do with the leftover debris from the

wreckage to help? Are you able to hide on the island if the pirate land and you have not

escaped?

My Island Adventure

You remember reading in the newspaper back home a long time ago, about someone who was

stranded on an island much the same as yourself that managed to be rescued because they

had written a message in a bottle and the tide had carried it far over the ocean and it

washed ashore on a beach in Australia.

You decide to write your own message in a bottle and recall the one you had seen in the

newspaper to help you:

To whoever may find this letter,

My name is Davy Jones; I was aboard the cruise ship Pacific Dreams when a terrible storm

hit us off the coast of Hawaii, I had been up on deck looking for the cabin crew at the time

of the storm and was swept over board when the giant waves engulfed the ship. Whilst in the

water I heard the ship crash into rocks and within seconds the ship was sinking into the

depths of the ocean. Without a life jacket I was tossed and turned and was at the mercy of

the sea, after some time I must have passed out through exhaustion or merely through the

shock. When, by some miracle, I awoke I found myself washed ashore on the island that I

now write this letter to you from. I can only imagine that I am marooned here in the South

Pacific; I do not know how far the raging seas carried me.

I was the sole survivor from the wreckage (or this is what I presume, as I am here alone). I

have managed to gather fruit from the islands trees and there is a natural spring on the

island for a source of fresh water so, for now, I will survive. I am not fully aware of the

extent of the islands dangers as I hear strange noises at night but am yet to come face to

face with the creature that produces these noises.

When (if) you stumble upon this letter please, please send for help, my family will be terribly

worried and as I may fear, presume me to be dead! Notify them immediately so they may

embark on a rescue mission.

I wait in hope,

Davy Jones.

To make your afternoon sessions more manageable, we have altered our pack to make your learning

more flexible.

There are five activities below which link in with our new theme of ‘Shipwrecked’ which we’ll be

looking at for the next two weeks. Feel free to complete them in any order you choose.

This week’s theme: SHIPWRECKED

Curriculum

area

Suggested activity

Science Marvellous materials

Foundation Stage 1 – What happens outside when it rains? Everything gets wet! How do we stop

ourselves from getting wet? We can use an umbrella when it rains and this protects us. Next time

it rains, can you get dressed up and stay dry? What did you use to keep yourself dry? Put a

picture on Tapestry to show us your waterproof clothes.

Foundation Stage 2 / KS1 – Can you investigate which materials are waterproof? What does

waterproof mean? Think about an umbrella. This keeps us dry when it rains – how does it keep us

dry? Can you build a house from Lego/Duplo/wooden blocks and test a variety of materials to see

if they are waterproof? Watch this video to give you an idea

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSs0ogUUqdM

Year 3 /4 – Once you realise that you are going to be on this island for some time your survival

instincts kick in. From the washed up debris from the shipwreck you have to decide what will be

useful. Think about materials that are waterproof, are insulators and that are reflective. Why

would these be useful on the island? What materials would they be? Can you make a list of useful

materials that you could use on your island?

Year 5 / 6 – What makes a good insulator? Since you’re stranded, you need to make sure you stay

warm. Watch this clip to help you: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zkntsbk Conduct an

investigation using ice. Wrap your ice in cling film before choosing a 2nd material to act as an

insulator to wrap around it to investigate which material keeps the ice frozen the longest. Can

you write a scientific prediction?

Design and

Technology

Shelters

Foundation Stage 1 – Can you build a den at your house – it could be in the garden or inside the

house. What have you used to make your den? How many people can fit inside your den? We would

love to see your dens on Tapestry or Twitter.

Foundation Stage 2 / KS1 – Mission Possible-but Challenging!

Your mission, which you must accept, is to build a shelter for two Lego figures (or similar). Please

post your shelters on twitter! The shelter will be judged as follows:

1. It must be able to withstand a 1 Kg weight being placed on the roof. The two figures must

remain protected and undamaged.

2. The two figures must remain dry. This will be judged by placing the two figures on a tissue.

The tissue must remain dry when 200 ml of water is poured over the top of the shelter. (Use

your knowledge of waterproof from Science to help).

3. The shelter and the figures inside must be able to withstand a 30 second blast from a

hairdryer (or similar). Have fun – we can’t wait to see them!

Page 29: Year 4 Home Learning Pack 8...You awake to find your shelter has kept you dry and warm for the night. You head off to the You head off to the shoreline in search of fish and to see

Year 3 /4 – Draw a detailed design for a shelter that you are going to build on your island,

labelling the materials that you are going to use. After you have designed your shelter can you

try to construct a replica of this using materials that you have a home/in your garden? Consider

the different conditions that your shelter will be subjected to on the island (high temperatures,

torrential rainfall or monsoon, gale-force winds).

Year 5 / 6 – Watch this clip and evaluate the shelter which has been made. Would this be an

effective shelter if you’re stranded on an island? Consider ways it could be improved.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVjmn05Ptgs After, try building your own shelter making

sure you include the improvements. You could use materials from inside your house/garden or

materials you gather while out on a walk.

History Great Explorers

Foundation Stage 1 – We can all be Great Explorers. Can you explore your garden or house and

draw three things that you have discovered. Are they new things that you have found? Where did

you find them?

Foundation Stage 2 / KS1 – Let’s find out about Captain James Cook, the famous explorer! Watch

this film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJnzP0Dp3t8

Tell someone in your family 3 facts that you have learnt or answer these questions: -

1. What was the name of Captain James Cook’s ship?

2. What was the biscuit called that the crew ate?

3. What did Captain James Cook spend most of his time doing on board the ship?

Year 3 - 6 – Christopher Columbus was a famous explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.

Watch this clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/ks2-christopher-

columbus/z7j3hbk Create your own fact file about his explorations – you may want to find out

about how he travelled, where did he explore and where did he discover?

R.E Celebrations- Christenings

Foundation Stage 1 – A Christening is a special celebration for a Christian baby. Can you talk

about a special celebration that you have had in your house – it could be a christening, naming

ceremony, wedding or a birthday. Do you have any photographs of the celebration that you can

look at? What can you see? How did you celebrate? Can you draw a picture of the special

celebration that you have talked about?

Foundation Stage 2 / KS1 – Christenings are a celebration celebrated by Christians. Can you

watch this short clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zm87tfr and talk about what you saw.

What did the vicar make with the paper? Can you remember the meaning for the symbols of the

house, book and cross? Download the ‘EYFS and KS1 Christening Powerpoint’ from our Home

Learning page and have a look through it. Can you write a list of the things that are given to, or

done for, the baby at their Christening?

Year 3 /4 – As part of our RE lessons we have looked at Sikhism and Christianity. We have looked

at different celebrations and ceremonies in both religions. Sikhs celebrate the birth of

a child through a naming ceremony called Naam Karan. Can you watch the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH89kg1K0RQ

to find out what happens at a naming ceremony and write a short explanation?

Page 30: Year 4 Home Learning Pack 8...You awake to find your shelter has kept you dry and warm for the night. You head off to the You head off to the shoreline in search of fish and to see

Year 5 / 6 – Our focus religion is Islam. Download the ‘RE Naming ceremony’ pdf document from

our Home Learning page for more information. Compare a Christian’s christening to an Islamic

naming ceremony – you can present this in a table or create an information poster.

Relationships

For all year groups: This week we’re thinking about ‘change.’ We would like you to focus on the

changes which you have noticed within your community and how your community has dealt with

them. Try listing or discussing the changes you’ve seen. For example, how a trip to the

supermarket has changed or how your community centre has changed.
