Iron Man Suddenly Appears on Earth! We discover more about this strange and mysterious creature and think about what it is doing here in the United Kingdom!

We have been combing the coun-try to discover all about the exciting and slightly worrying appearance of The Iron Man. Our reporters have been meeting people who have seen, heard or experienced The Iron Man. We have asked the important ques-tions on the lips of everyone at the moment and tried to find answers to these searching questions.

What has the Iron Man been doing?

We have been finding out about the Iron Man so we have talked to a lit-tle boy who met him called Hogarth. We asked him, what has the Iron Man has been doing? He said, He has been eating and eating whatever he could find that is made of metal and especially iron. However he has been on the cliff a lot. On Friday a little girl said, he is very cute because his eyes glow different colours.

The Prime minister said, if anymore tractors are eaten or he comes near-er to London the army will have to come and get the Iron Man. We also talked to a farmer, Mr Coddywob-ble who said, he has eaten nearly one hundred tractors from all of the farmers in the area.

Why did the Iron Man come to Earth?

Farmer Holly said, the Iron Man came to eat all of the metal in the land. All of the tractors have been eaten in half and all of the fences be-cause he is very hungry. Farmer Bill remarked that, he ate my new John Deere tractor, now what will I do?

Who knows what he will do next? When will he stop eating the metal?

Where did he come from?

We've asked some villagers and local farmers if they had any idea where the Iron Man had come from. One of the villagers thought he came from the deep blue sea because he had seaweed on his shoulders. We've asked Hogarth, a local farm boy and he thinks he comes from outer space from the way he reacts. Hogarth had the first sight of the Iron Man. We

have also asked the expert scientists and they thought the same as Hoga-rth. Despite everyone having differ-ent ideas we still don't have any real ideas where he really came from.

What does the Iron Man like to eat?

We've been tracing the movements of the Iron Man and we spoke to other farmers and worried villagers.

Farmer Dave said, he's bitten my tractor in half, taken the pitch forks and spades. Despite him hauling a huge breakfast of two rusty cars and one lorry, he still slithered up all the barbed wire fences like spaghetti.

We then spoke to a surprised farmer, Mr Matthews from Appletree Farm. He said, he's eaten all of my five trac-tors! I don't know how to get any more of them because I get money by ploughing my fields with my trac-tors which I no longer have. So I may have to use the old fashioned way by horse, but my horse has a sore leg. I don't know what to do!

Mrs Green said, I saw a great path of flattened trees and it shocked me! He had knocked things over like they were dominoes.

So we still don't know everything about the Iron Man.

All T.V. programmes involving farms will be cancelled due to lack of ma-chinery and there might be a short-age of food.

We will have more opinions in the next issue.

Why do you think the Iron Man is so scary?

I think he is so scary because he is as big as a twenty story building and his giant changing colour eyes just freak me out. However he has bitten trac-tors in half just to make me fear him even more. Also, he is too scary for me so that might tell you how scary he is. I have only recently found out he only eats metal and would not eat us humans. I thought that I was lucky to escape with my life before I found out he was harmless to us! I think

he is really synthetic but I might be wrong. Nevertheless there are more reasons that I think he is so scary. When the other farmers and myself thought we had trapped him he was so powerful and managed to escape and continued to cause havoc.

How scared were you?

I was terrified. I was so scared I that I could not think straight. I was pet-rified, he took enormous strides towards me. I didn’t know what I should do, should I run? Eventually, I managed to think and said to my-self that I should get away and run for my life. I did not know whether he would eat me, that’s why I ran as fast as I could back to the house. When I arrived home I took a few deep breaths then I told my Dad what I had seen. I was also scared that I would be in trouble for telling lies but luckily he believed me then suddenly grabbed his shotgun from the metal cabinet.

How did the Iron Man move?

The Iron Man looked like he was an astronaut on the dusty surface of the moon doing a moon walk. He moved slowly but even the loudest noise in the world could not blank out the sound of his feet clanging down on the rocky road. His feet were crush-ing the rocks into tiny pieces. At that moment the Iron Man’s feet looked immortal like they would never run out of steam. When he moved I was petrified, I could not stand it! Fur-thermore his great iron head was looking intently searching for food.

What did the Iron Man look like?

Well when I first saw him he looked massive, as tall as a skyscraper. He was above me like a jetfighter in the sky. When he walked he made a draft I had butterflies in my tummy.

What did he look like?

Firstly he was huge with it’s big green eyes glowing in the evening light. I saw it had a steel robot six pack and he was strong. On his body, his head stood as big as a bedroom as well his feet were as big as a bed. Then when I looked up he filled the whole sky-line. In addition to this he looked so evil, the size of him was unbelievable, I was petrified. I didn’t know what to do, I mean what could I do? There-fore I decided to run home furiously where I felt safe!

What were you doing when you first saw the Iron Man?

It was late evening and I was fishing but my rod kept getting caught in the weeds so I packed up my things. When suddenly I saw two green eyes sparkling in the sky.

How did the Iron Man move?

Firstly he moved with a creaky noise. He looked like he was doing a moon walk, it was so funny! His iron feet were huge and made a loud thud-ding sound. I was petrified that the sound was coming closer and the earth shook with each step.

Can you describe what he looked like?

When I first saw him he was huge, he was taller than a house. I felt so small as he towered over me. In the dark-ness his eyes were like car lights that shone green. I could see his body was rusty and had rivets to hold it togeth-er. On top of his body his huge head was as big as my bedroom together with enormous feet as big as my bed. I was so small it hurt my neck be-cause I had to look up so high. Every time the Iron Man moved his fingers they creaked but they looked just like mine with five fingers on each hand.

What did he look like?

When I first saw him I though he was gigantic with a head as big as a bed-room. His arms were like cranes and his shadow covered me, I felt really small. So I looked into his eyes, they were like headlamps changing colour white, then red and then blue. An-other thing when he moved he made a creaking noise because his iron was all rusty. As he walked he had huge heavy feet and every step left enor-mous footprints in the ground.

What was he made out of?

I discovered he was made completely out of iron that was heavy and rusty. I could see the metal plates that held him together with rusty round riv-ets. His eyes were like headlamps that changed colour. In addition, his head was like a giant iron dust-bin. I felt petrified the first time I saw the Iron Man but despite him eating tractors I felt very sorry for him. Another thing, his body was big enough to eat twenty tractors and his arms were as long as cranes. Fur-thermore his great iron feet looked very strong as well as each one being the size of a bed.

What did you see?

I was out fishing by the stream when suddenly two green headlamps ap-peared from behind the cliff. (At

least I thought they were headlamps). Soon they were followed by a huge, dark figure taller than a house. He filled the skyline and petrified me.

When did you first see the Iron Man?

About five or six days ago, I was fishing when my line kept getting caught in the weeds. Suddenly two green eyes with a body behind them emerged from the cliff top. I felt petrified when I saw this, iron gi-ant scaling the steep cliffs below me therefore he must have been very tall. Who could stop him coming I won-dered? Suddenly, I felt the urge to run! The Iron Man was taller than a ten storey house and trees fell before him. Standing before me, the Iron Man dominated all of the earth and space. As he moved towards me he sounded like cymbals crashing, a dreadful din. Like I said before, it was just terrifying.

Did anyone else see the Iron Man?

After I saw the Iron Man when I got home I told my Dad and he grabbed his dangerous shotgun and climbed into his speedy car. I think the rest of my family saw the Iron Man be-cause my sisters were crying and my mum went pale, we were all so scared. My Mum was very fright-ened for my Dad who rushed out to look for him. Also I wondered if I would ever see him again. My Dad went from farm to farm looking for the Iron Man, some of the farmers laughed at him. However in the end the farmers did see the Iron Man because they decided to catch him and stop him eating any more trac-tors and machinery. Eventually my Dad and the farmers laid a trap for the Iron Man and dug a huge pit. I watched the Iron Man eat barbed wire and I made a sound with a nail and a knife by hitting them together to attract him. Finally, the Iron Man came nearer and crasshhh.... fell into the pit. We had won, we had trapped him.

How tall was he?

I believe the Iron Man was taller than a house and felt very large as he stood on the skyline. His huge iron head was as big as a bedroom and it looked like a metal dustbin but a hundred times bigger! As well as an enormous head his body was gigan-tic, the size of ten tractors or more! When he stood above the cliff he blocked out the sun.

When did you see him?

It was about half past seven at night, I was sitting in the tree fishing even

though my rod kept getting caught in the weeds. I was looking at the view and before long I saw this gigantic creaky robot coming over the top of the cliff. Just at that moment the Iron Man stopped then I stopped and we looked at each other. As he walked the ground shook like an earth-quake then suddenly I was hanging like a monkey, dangling from the tree. Before Iron Man could get too close I dashed home like a rocket and didn’t look back.

We hope you have enjoyed this news-paper. It has taken us two weeks to make this newspaper including writ-ing the wordle, drawing the pictures, creating the newspaper report and the interview you have just read. It has been a joint piece of work with the class working together in in pairs and groups to write sections of the articles.

Have you ever read the Iron Man by Ted Hughes? Why not go and buy a copy and think about why Ted Hughes wrote the book!
