Year Two February 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, The year 2 team thought you may find it helpful to know about what we are planning to teach this half term and some of our learning objectives with ideas of how you can help you child at home. Numeracy We will continue to consolidate the children's knowledge of number facts. This half term, we will be learning about multiplication and division, problem solving, money and position and direction. When you are out shopping, please take every opportunity to ask questions which will help your child to develop their understanding of solving problems. For example: This bag of rice cost £1.30p. I only have a £2 coin in my purse. How much change will I expect? Literacy The children will continue to use exciting vocabulary, connective, openers and punctuation. We will be planning and writ- ing stories and making notes to remember ideas. The children will also be writing riddles, instructions, labels and captions for cyclical diagrams. Science In science, we will be learning about ‘Plants.” The children will learn the names of various plants and their different parts. As part of their work, the children will be bringing home a seed to grow and the will have to keep a report on its growth. They will be asked to bring back their plant occasionally to measure and compare with others. Geography In geography, we will be learning about the ‘British Isles’ through Barnaby Bear. You can help children’s understanding by looking at maps with them and talking about the different countries in GB. Please discuss any cities you and your child have visited, showing them where they were in relation to London. They will also be learning about basic mapping skills, such as using coordinates and knowing what some symbols on maps mean.

Year Two

February 2015

Dear Parents/Carers,

The year 2 team thought you may find it helpful to know about what we are planning to teach this half term and some of our learning objectives with ideas of how you can help you child at home.

Numeracy We will continue to consolidate the children's knowledge of number facts. This half term, we

will be learning about multiplication and division, problem solving, money and position and direction. When you are out shopping, please take every opportunity to ask questions which will help your child to develop their

understanding of solving problems. For example: This bag of rice cost £1.30p. I only have a £2 coin in my purse. How much change will I expect?

Literacy

The children will continue to use exciting vocabulary, connective, openers and punctuation. We will be planning and writ-

ing stories and making notes to remember ideas. The children will also be writing riddles, instructions, labels and captions for cyclical

diagrams.

Science

In science, we will be learning about ‘Plants.” The children will learn the names of various plants and their different parts. As part of their work, the children will be bringing home a seed to grow and the will have to keep a report on its growth. They will be asked to bring back their plant occasionally to measure and compare with others.

Geography

In geography, we will be learning about the ‘British Isles’ through Barnaby Bear. You can help children’s understanding by looking at maps with them and talking about the different countries in GB. Please discuss any cities you and your child have visited, showing them where they were in relation to London. They will also be learning about basic mapping skills, such as using coordinates and knowing what some

symbols on maps mean.

Art In art we will be leaning about Line and Tone. The children will be exploring marks and shading through drawing.

Cooking

Your child will be cooking throughout the year in various curriculum areas. In order for these sessions to take place we would like to ask you to make a voluntary contribution of £1 towards the cost of purchasing resources this half term. Please give the donation to your child’s class teacher.

P.E.

Remember your child is taught PE every week and needs to have a full kit in school. PE days are…

Owls- Monday Penguins - Thursday

Ducks -Thursday Macaws - Friday

It would also be helpful if...

You make time to share a book with your child every day;

You help your child to learn her/his key words by playing games such as, pairs, snap, looking for the words in books, displaying them around your home etc.

You return the maths game permission slip (if you haven’t already done so). The games are a fun way of helping your child to develop maths skills.

We hope some of these ideas will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, queries or concerns we are always willing to talk them through with you. If we are unable to answer your question immediately, we are always willing to make an appointment for a more suitable time.

Thank you for your support. Ms T Scott, The Year 2 Team.

We will also be teaching aspects of ICT, music, RE and PSHE as the term progresses. Our planning is linked across the curriculum and most subjects will be taught alongside each oth-er.
