BODY SURVEYWeek 1

Gr oup Gabriela Mill / Paula Madden / David McEwenPlotting The Body

By marking the position of the pivotal points of the human body we traced the line of the skeleton between these spots. We then indexed various gestures of the figure on the chair using multi-frame photography and video footage, simultaneously recording the front and side elevation of the body.

By combining the frames of specific movements we understand the movement of the body in relation to time, with each image representing 2 seconds of motion.

16 Second Seat

From the information gathered in the body survey, we selected a number of frames which covered one fluent movement. This movement ranged between standing and various positions of sitting, and eventually returning to the standing position. The profile of each frame was created by tracing the points plotted from side elevations in the body survey.

32 frames were selected to create the seat, each frame representing 0.5 seconds.

60 seconds / 12 hours

The positioning of the seat on the site was first considered, with the room design reponding to the positioning of the seat. The orientation of the chair changes hourly to respond to the direction of sunlight and the shadows cast by site.

Each hour long segment of chair which faces towards the sun represents 10 frames of body profiles, each frame spaced by 1 second.

Heights of blocks are altered so that a consistant rise of step can be acheived, resulting is some blocks being partially covered by shadows.

Heights of blocks are altered so that each block is completely lit by the sun, resulting in an unequal rise and fall of each step.
