    Hello my name is Josh.

I have come to the Radiologydepartment to have an x-ray of my arm, which I hurt when I fell over.A person called a Radiographerwill be taking the image of thebones in my arm on the hospitals x-ray machine.

... and this is my Radiographer for today

Hi Josh...My name is RachelI will be taking the x-ray of yourarm today.

  • Rachel RichardsRadiographer

This is an x-ray machine. It sends out invisible x-ray particles, which pass through your bones. A computer or special film records this and produces pictures of what is happening inside you for your doctor to see...

Rachel, the Radiographer takes Josh through to where he will be having his x-ray...

  • Rachel RichardsRadiographer

Rachel lines up the x-ray machine using a grid that is projected from the top of the machine. Once she has got it in the right place Rachel will go behind a screen where she will take the picture using her console.

There is very little risk with having one x-ray, because the dose of radiation you are given is always the lowest one possible that the doctor needs to get a good picture.

Because I am having my arm x-rayed today I have not needed to remove any of my clothing.

Also if I have an x-ray of my tummy or leg I may need to lie down on a special table below the x-ray machine. I would be made comfortable by the Radiographer who will give me a pillow to placemy head on.

If for any reason in the future I need an x-ray of say my tummy or leg, I would need to take my trousers or top off. The Radiology department have an area where I can get changed in private.

Ok Josh... Keep still I am aboutto take your x-ray

  • Rachel RichardsRadiographer

Alright Josh. Thats your x-ray done and a digital image has been sent to the Radioligist who will report their findings to your doctor.

    ...And here is my x-ray!

  • Rachel RichardsRadiographer

while on the way out of the x-ray room. Josh notices another machine...

Rachel... What is that big doughnut of a machine in thecorner...

The machine is calleda CT scanner...some people say that it looks like a polo mint...

  • Rachel RichardsRadiographer

CT scans are a way for doctors to diagnose certain problems and illnesses. CT stands for computed tomography. CT scans are like more detailed x-rays. They use x-rays, but they are different because they can see LOTS more. CT scans can be done on any part of your head or body, and they can show things that x-rays can't, like your internal organs (liver, kidneys, brain and pancreas), muscles and blood vessels. Once the CT scan has taken place the Radiologist will send a report of your scan to your doctor so that you can talk about the results at your next appointment.

...Meanwhile in the radiology waiting room, Josh bumps into one ofhis school friends Omar. Omar is being treated as an inpatient at the hospital...

Hi Omar... I have just had an x-ray of my arm with Rachel...How are you?

Hi Josh... I am ok. I have been staying here for a few days now. I have come to Radiology to have a CT Scan on my tummy.
