March usually marks the start

of Spring, but with recent

weather events I’m not so

sure some of us will have that

joyful spring in our step! For

me in Winforton we’ve seen

neighbouring fields become

lakes, fallen trees in the village have wiped out our

phone line / internet, and the potholes are no fun

for the car journeys. However, we are the lucky

ones. The wellies have been on most days to round

up our new ducks (Otis and Redding) and Cariad

has been keen to jump in puddles just like Peppa

Pig! I just need to be one step ahead to see how

deep the puddle is!

We have lots of news to tell you about, so please

turn to page 37 to read about the feedback forms

and to find out who the winners are. Also news

of the Car Boot Sales, some changes to us as a

business, and the photo competition.

Regardless of the miserable weather, there seems

to be many events planned for the coming months.

Some have been covered in the various articles and

all will be included in our detailed what’s on section

at the back. From grand openings to a Dark Skies

Festival, from sponsored cycle events to a Spring

fayre, from local choir rehearsals to new local group

meetings, from Woodland Management sessions to

River Wye clear up days - there will be something

for everyone. Get involved if you can.

Lastly, Fashion Farmer Kate Sly is back with her

trends for Spring / Summer. Perhaps after reading

her article you’ll be keen to hit the shops - with that

all important knowledge and a spring in your step.

Enjoy,

News from Talgarthby Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth

At the time of writing, we are experiencing one of the most severe storms of my adult life, after many weeks of turbulent weather. I must put on record my thanks to those workers who have struggled around the clock to maintain the power supply to our homes and to keep our road network and drainage systems open so that we can continue to go about our business. Also, as in other tricky situations, these difficult times show our communities at their strongest, with friends and neighbours stepping up to the plate, to offer genuine solidarity and support.

I have just attended a budget seminar at County Hall which was a sobering experience. The extent of savings required by the Council’s overall financial plight is eye-watering and it is clear that there will be an impact on every community in Powys. However, my Welsh Liberal Democrat Group will work with other PCC colleagues to protect the most vulnerable groups in the task of setting a budget for 2014/15. For me, the protection of the Additional Learning Needs service and the county’s network of Citizens Advice Bureaux are amongst the key priorities. Whilst any change to the funding arrangements for public conveniences has been ruled out in the coming financial year, we must remain alert to the issue as a community and be ready to put alternative arrangements in place.

Despite Wales’ early performances in this year’s Six Nations Rugby being a little underwhelming, hope springs eternal. In a matter of days, we will unite as a nation to mark the festival of our patron saint, St David or Dewi Sant. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and not disrupt the eisteddfodau and other public events to celebrate the occasion. Interestingly as Chair of the National Assembly Petitions Committee, I recently accepted a petition calling for “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” to be

given official status as Wales’

National Anthem. Whatever the outcome of the

petition, I am sure that we will continue to sing it

with gusto.

Recently, Talgarth hosted a seminar organised by

the Centre for Regeneration Excellence Wales

(CREW). This was attended by regeneration

experts from across Wales and further afield. The

seminar included Talgarth as a case study of what

can be achieved when a community comes together

with a shared objective of improving the quality

of life locally. While much remains to be done to

realise Talgarth’s full economic potential, the fact

that we were chosen to host the event is genuine

recognition of what has already been achieved. I am

sure that the late Lord Richard Livsey of Talgarth,

who consistently championed the cause of his

home town, would have approved.

One example of grass roots community regeneration

was the Talgarth YFC pre Rally Supporters Dinner

in the Town Hall, which I attended in early February.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and an

excellent launch pad for the YFC Rally itself, which

will be held on Saturday 7th June at Great House

Farm. Congratulations to the organisers of the event

and all who contributed to the evening.

In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue

of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me

on: 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@

wales.gov.uk My next advice surgery is on Friday 7th

March from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information

and Resource Centre.

Best wishes

William

News from Glasbury Wardby Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury

With the horrendous amount of rain we have been having lately my heart goes out to all our local farmers with pasture under water and lambs on the way. It really has been an extremely testing time for everyone. I am, however, greatly relieved that the flood defences that were put in last year have prevented houses in this area from being flooded again.

Great News from Powys is the fact that Erwood Bridge will re-open in early March – 3½ months ahead of schedule. Llanstephan Bridge will also go back to its normal duel access on the same day.

At county hall there is a great deal to be decided in the next few weeks, with a multitude of cuts on their way and no easy option of achieving the required savings. One issue that has been deferred is the future of our public toilets which the cabinet have decided to keep under their management for at least another year.

The Brecon and Radnorshire Y.F.C Entertainment

finals are underway. The standard at these events always amazes me and I can’t wait to see what our local talent has come up with this year. Good luck to all those involved in our local clubs.

My own children have also been on the stage in a school production at Hay School and as I was watching I was struck by great pride not only in the children but in the wonderful teaching staff we have. As a parent at Hay and a governor at Clyro and Gwernyfed I have the opportunity to witness how well our local schools are doing. This is in no small part due to the dedicated and hardworking staff who give 100%.

May I wish you all a happy St David’s day.

News from Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled GroupWe are now preparing for the new season and hope that the weather soon improves so that we can start riding again during March.

The group caters for riders who have physical disabilities, learning difficulties or other special needs, offering carefully planned riding sessions for children and young people on alternate Saturdays through to November. Mid-week riding, including for adults and school groups, can be provided by arrangement.

We rely entirely on volunteer help with both the riding, when we sometimes need two or three helpers to one rider, and at our fundraising events. The first training session for volunteers will be at 6pm on Wednesday 09 April.

Summer fun day and fete: Saturday 12th July

If you are interested in joining us either to ride or to help, please get in touch for further details.

As spring approaches, the students at Gwernyfed High School are working hard towards their exams. For our Year 11 students, it is a time for both hard work and for

decisions to be made about their future.

Here at Gwernyfed, we have an excellent Sixth Form Centre catering for everyone’s needs. The unique rural location based in a Mansion House allows students to study in a calm but purposeful atmosphere. The Sixth Form have their own centre based in the courtyard and includes comfortable sitting areas; a study room providing space for students to work in a quiet environment and a IT room designated just for the Sixth Form.

But what do the students and teachers think? Here are just a few of their thoughts:

‘Here at Gwernyfed we are exceptionally proud to be able to offer a very wide range of subjects and qualifications. There are a huge number of activities that you can get involved in all of which are brilliant for including on CVs and university applications.’ Rebecca Savage, Head of Sixth Form.

‘Studying Biology at Gwernyfed is fantastic. I can’t think of any other teachers who have so much passion for their subject or who can inspire so much enthusiasm in their students.’ Imogen Cripps Year 13

‘A Gwernyfed Sixth Form education is an experience you will not regret. The rewards for adhering to the school motto ‘persevere’ will benefit you for the rest of your life.’ John Williams, Headteacher

We are nearly ready to go live! The builders have

finished and the beautiful twin arched market hall

is restored to its former glory. We have a new logo

to match, which takes its’ colour from the original

exterior paint that was date-traced during the

renovation. The exterior paint colour we have used

is an exact match to the original finish the building

was given in the 1840s.

March will be spent finishing off the building work

details, furnishing the flat and hanging the heritage

interpretation displays in the old market hall. Once

this work is completed our new website will go

live, displaying beautiful photographs of the finished

interior. There will be a grand opening ceremony

on Easter Saturday,19th April and thereafter the

building will be ready for business!

We are taking bookings now for both the Cheese

Market Flat and the Market Hall. The historical flat

can accommodate two for 3, 4 or 7 night stays and

the Market Hall is available to hire on a daily rate

for public events, sales and community or private

functions. All enquiries should be directed to clare@

Hay Community Woodland Management Group: This group has been created by Hay Town Council’s Fishing and Estates sub committee with help from Gareth Ellis, Committee Projects Manager, Green Valleys CIC.

The Vision: To create and maintain a light, open and accessible woodland along the old railway line from The Gliss to Warren Close, a distance of approximately one mile. To improve the flora and fauna making it a much more pleasant walk for the public to enjoy.

Background: The trees have not been managed for many years with the result of over crowding mainly by self seeding sycamore trees, many of which are approximately 40 to 50 feet high and which are close to a number of houses positioned adjacent to the railway line. It is the intention that specimen trees will remain and we intend to plant new broad leaved trees such as sweet chestnut, oak, walnut and other trees that will produce fruit (food for wild life). It is anticipated that this project may take up to ten years.

Current Position: We have already made a start on the project with Gareth Ellis taking charge of training, the use of equipment, health and safety. Special thanks to Rachel Palmer, The Long Forest Community Hedgerow Project and Sid Morris (the chainsaw man). Also many thanks to all of the volunteers as without you, we would be unable to progress this project. If anyone is interested in becoming involved, please contact Cllr Alan Powell tel 01497 820803.

The next Woodland Management session will be Sunday 9th March at 10am at Hay Bridge. This day will involve tree planting and siting of bird and bat boxes.

Dog Fouling: Sadly this problem is ever present in and around our town. As we are working to make our community a much more pleasant place for everyone to enjoy we urge dog owners and dog walkers to please clean up any accidents in a bio degradable bag and deposit it in the nearest bin or

take it home and bin it there. Please be responsible

for your pets as they do what is natural to them, we

are aware most responsible people are compliant,

but there are still too many regular offenders, AND

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE so please clean up

after your pet and help us be proud of our town.

News from TimbuktuThe security situation in northern Mali still remains fragile, however schools have re-opened in Timbuktu and our teacher friends have been sending us updates and photos. A grant from the English Speaking Union has now been received and girls are receiving extra English lessons and dictionaries. We have also arranged to send a supply of science books to Timbuktu, thanks to a contact from Addyman’s bookshop and a donation from the Clarendon Academy in Wiltshire.

If you’re feeling energetic and would like to support our work in Timbuktu, there are two exciting opportunities coming up. Firstly, the medics group are organising their annual sponsored cycle ride on Saturday 5th April. Meet at the Co-op at 9.30am and opt for routes of 8, 24 or 44 miles. The 8 mile route to the toll bridge is great for families. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Entry forms and sponsorship forms are available from the Hay2Timbuktu website or Hay surgery, entry costs are £5 for adults and £3 for children.

Secondly, the Hay Bike Festival have ambitious plans to cycle to Timbuktu this April, and you can join them! There will be four static bikes set up at the Festival hub at Hay Castle, and if 260 riders can each cycle for an hour then we could hit the target of 6087km – the distance between Hay and Timbuktu. Rides can take place any time from Friday 25th April to Sunday 27th April (through the night too), so please sign up for an hour if you can. Details can be found on the Bike Festival website: www.haycycling.org.

Hay Community Choir have recorded a fantastic CD of music, fusing African and Welsh traditions. The CD includes contributions from local school children, and unusual instruments such as the African Kora (similar to a welsh harp). You can pick up the Desert Celts EP from several shops in Hay for £5, and it is available as a digital download from iTunes. All revenue will go to Hay2Timbuktu’s health and education projects.

For more inspirational music check out the Radnor Improvisers at the Globe on March 14th. The group have been working with local school children to encourage improvisational skills and share knowledge of Malian music.

Is there anything better for Spring than the cheerful blooms of the Daffodil working their magic in so many parts of the garden? Easy to grow and flowering year after year Daffodils come in all sizes, several colours and different varieties, flowering over a long period from January to April.

Dwarf varieties such as the multi-headed ‘Tete a Tete’ work really well in pots, baskets, in a rockery or under trees and shrubs. Larger varieties make a bold statement in beds and borders.

Daffodils will grow in most soils and thrive best in sun or shade. If you missed out on planting your bulbs last autumn your local garden centre will have pot grown plants for planting out now. They should be allowed to die down naturally and fed as the flowers finish so they build up energy for flowering the following year.

So transform your garden with a much needed fanfare of colour in the early part of the gardening season and don’t forget that Daffodils also work brilliantly with other spring bulbs, Primroses, Wood Anemones and flowering shrubs such as Forsythia.

Are your grapes like raisins?!As I write we’ve been bombarded with the most appalling weather and we are as a nation utterly fed up and vitamin D depleted! We sense a resentful submission to these elements and need to break free! I broke free with his nibs, and went to Bavaria where I discovered 1. I cannot ski even against the foetuses careering down that mountain, and 2. I needed the break! Related to this (but not maybe yet evident why), was the fact I did an Induction with a lady yesterday and we spent the entire hour talking (no worry - we have all the time in the world for machines and weights and this is more important), about her fatigue, lack of joie de vivre and nutritional habits. She struck me as being very like me which was a bit unnerving – moves fast, talks fast, lots of the go …. But over the years I have learnt to temper my day and allow for good breaks – I had no choice or I’d have burnt out and everything about her said she needs to do the same. Added

to this she loves her coffee, tea and biscuit breaks ‘to keep her going’. As we chatted more it seemed every recent local illness had crossed her path, her falling prey to it. I suggested her adrenals might be – instead of healthy grapes, shrunken raisins! In other words she may be Adrenally fatigued. (AF) - It’s almost a ‘stress syndrome’. When I advise ladies about the menopause it’s quite safe to treat it as AF as they can be very closely affiliated. Lack of energy, immune resistance, no vitality, less enjoyment of life, food cravings, decreased sex drive.. can often be alleviated with sound nutrition, stress reduction techniques, mind body classes, and breaking up the mundane (hence holidays!). Get to really know..........Dr Peter Howard was born in London where he first trained as a dental practitioner before continuing into the world of medicine and becoming a GP. He has worked for many years at the Haygarth Medical Practice, covering a large area, and supplying general medical services to the locality.

Once again Dr Howard is running the London Marathon for a worthy cause.

Spain comes to Radnorshire! Those lovely people at The Radnor Arms at Llowes have introduced a Tapas evening once a week. It’s on a Thursday and it’s brilliant!

Owned by Colin Thompson, the old stone inn with wonderful views of the Black Mountains is situated on the road which runs alongside the Radnorshire side of the River Wye between Clyro and Glasbury.

Once my friend Tricia and I had ordered a bottle of Rioja, we studied the extensive menu in earnest. There’s plenty to choose from so rather than choose a variety of tapas, Colin asked Josh, who has been cooking here for 18 months, to prepare us a selection of different dishes.

We started off with some warm breads and olives with oil and vinegar and cold meats such as Parma ham and salami with rocket and parmesan. All excellent. Tricia said that the olives were divine. Then came along the Tomates de vina rellenos con queso de canra, albahaca y pinones (baked vine tomatoes stuffed with goat’s cheese, basil and pine nuts), followed by a superb large langoustine. All the dishes are described in Spanish and English.

Percy, the friendly Manager, then brought us very good butterflied Sardines and a selection of scrumptious bruschettas including one with Boquerones (anchovies) which I absolutely adore; one with Manchego cheese, olive and spring onion salsa and tomato, and one with a black pudding and streaky bacon topping. Tricia said she didn’t like black pudding. Anyway, she gave it a try and is now converted. It really was so good.

Suffice it to say that the other dishes we tasted, such as the Braised Stuffed Squid, the Pork Casserole and the Seafood Casserole were marvellous. The flavours of the food here are wonderful.

To see the menus and the opening times etc., take a look at www.theradnorarms.com.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

News from Wye LocalWe would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you that took the time to complete our recent Feedback Form. Each form made very interesting reading.

There were suggestions for topics that you would like to see us feature in this magazine, things that hadn’t been on our radar so we really are chuffed. Food for thought on what areas of the magazine need slight improvement. A long list of names of people we will be getting in touch with - either to be our Get to really know or a Local Talent. Overall you were all very positive about the work we do, often signing the form with ‘Great publication - keep up the good work’ or ‘I look forward every month to the new Wye Local’. I think my favourite was ‘I love the fact that you personalise the magazine, and that it continues to grow - whilst retaining it’s unique flavour’. Rest assured that over the coming months we will be incorporating your ideas into your community magazine - watch this space!

And of course there were 28 prizes up for grabs, here are the winners: Julian Williams, Llyswen; Viv Leach, Usk; Roy Christon, Clryo; Joanna Jones, Brecon; Lisa Howells, Bronllys; Samii Davies, Brecon; Amdiea Saitori, Hay; Mrs D Bentley, Brecon; Will Lewis, Glasbury; Elwyn Powell, Groesffordd; Diana Jones, Hay; Sarah Diskin, Sennybridge; Kayleigh Rees-Jones, Talgarth; Julie Pugh, Llangorse; Sarah Edwards, Three Cocks; Sue Davies, Garthbrengy; Mrs D E Lloyd, Pen y Maes; Andrew King, Penorth; Susan Warne, Winforton; Mrs J Davies, Ystradgynlais; Paul Hartley, Glasbury; Adelle Murrain, Libanus; Anne Kleiser, Talgarth; Gayner Williams, Brecon; Mari Fforde, Clyro; Lo Talbot, Bwlch; Linette Longstaffe; and Courtney Walker,Tregoyd. Thank you once again to the very generous businesses who donated the various prizes.

Now onto the news about the Car Boot Sales held at Hay on Wye Primary School. The bad news is we will not be holding these sales during the year of 2014. The School has been very supportive and offered us the use of the grounds yet again. But unfortunately the two previous seasons were losing money. The weather was a big factor, if wet during the week the turnout for ‘Boots would be poor on the actual sale day, even if the sale day was

dry. Buyers to the sales were also much less than in the starter years. I personally feel this is to do with the various ‘Items for Sale’ on Facebook. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the many years, both sellers and buyers. It has not been an easy decision, but for 2014 the team’s time and energy is needed on other projects.

In January we made some business changes. The leap over to the VAT world is going smoothly, dare I say it! Advertisers are very pleased for us absorbing the VAT charge into our current rates: no rise for businesses who aren’t VAT registered; and not to mention the ‘quids in’ for VAT registered businesses.

We are now a Limited Company. CariAds Local Ltd will be the trading name for both the Wye Local and the Local Beacon magazines. A new business account has been opened so please do get in touch if you are an advertiser and you don’t have our new account details, although this will be on all recent invoices. For those who read her column and/or know us as a family, it won’t take you long to work out where the name stems from! It’s also a play on the Welsh to English translations: Cariad meaning love; and Cari meaning you like. ‘Love Local’ and ‘You Like Ads Local’.

You have until 30th March to enter our annual photography competition. The theme is Local Landscapes. The rules being very simple: high resolution images of local landscapes in or around Brecon, Talgarth or Hay; images need to be landscape not portrait. Twelve of the entries will appear in the Local Landscapes 2015 Calendar. Email your entries to [email protected] with each image titled, and include your name and address. Good luck ... We aim to distribute the 2015 Calendar early Summer.

2014 is very exciting for us as a team and business. Each month we will continue to provide you with your community magazine, whilst also working in the background on other projects. In the words of Dolly Parton - “You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.”

This month I think we all probably have similar thoughts - the rain and floods. Eventually the soaked state of the fields will start to affect farm crops, either it becomes impossible to harvest what is already there or, a little later in the year, it will be impossible to sow and plant leading to a problem that has existed this winter with local potatoes. Last year’s very wet spring led to the farmers having to sow a little later than usual and that, combined with a very hot July, resulted in the potatoes being much smaller.

Every so often something new comes into the market. A few years ago sprout tops suddenly arrived and from being a rarity in November they have become quite normal and are well worth their place on the shelf. This last month another member of the brassica family showed up. “Flower Sprouts” is the name given to them. They are small clumps of leaf grown like sprouts all the way up a stem. They are not flowers but have a not unattractive green and purple colouring. Cooking is very quick and easy - just boil, steam or stir fry.

This winter has seen quite stable prices with all the British root crops very reasonable and the bulk of the indigenous greens the same. The only things that have been erratic are cauliflower and broccoli and this is not a crop shortage but difficulty in harvesting them in the wet conditions. Fruit has been equally stable with lots of excellent citrus and exotics to go with the British apples and pears. Here again a new variety has arrived - Pink Kiss. This is an apple that is remarkably similar to Pink Lady only it does not carry the ridiculously high price. Pink Lady was only grown under licence and someone has made a lot of money out of them - I hope the Pink Kiss takes over and we can have what is, admittedly, a very nice apple, but at a sensible price. As usual the Seville oranges came and went very quickly and I hope everyone was successful in their marmalade making.

Now in March we should see lots of things imported in the way of early vegetables. For fruit we will have to wait a little longer although the forced rhubarb is excellent at the moment. After that is April and Easter with summer coming along behind them

Poem CornerDr. Foster’s Curse

Dr. Foster went to Gloucester

In a shower of rain

He trod in a puddle

Right up to his middle

And never was heard of again!

Well, I think he resurfaced round here

After several gallons of beer

For the rain its torrential

And floods consequential

His legacy strangely is queer!

We’re deluged with water

There just is no quarter

Our gutters are constantly leaking

Then the lights all go off

And we splutter and cough

Its a wonder we all are still speaking!

Nothing could surely be worse

Than a nursery rhyme with a curse

This worrisome quack

Must never come back

And now for the very last verse!

Lets pray to St. Swithin on high

To grant us some sun and blue sky

Take the storm clouds away

Banish the grey

For we don’t want all this til July!

News fromPlan B for Hay

We felt we should address some inaccuracies in last month’s Wye Local, specifically a claim

made by Mr D Gittins, a newly co-opted town councillor for Hay-on-Wye. He wrote half a

page on problems facing the residents of Hay, most of it centred on public toilets.

He also added a few lines on the new school

building, and said, “If the original plans had been implemented, I suggest much of this article

would have been redundant.”That’s not the case at all. At a recent meeting

with Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, we were told that the original plans had been rejected because they represented ‘bad value’, would not provide a school free of cost, and were too complex

and uncertain. Instead, Powys CC will build the new school on the existing site - where 72%

of local people want it to be - and is confident of raising £3m from Welsh Government to

complete the £8m build. We were also told that Powys CC would have

to sell Hay’s public properties, come what may. Stand-alone community buildings are now unsustainable and Powys CC are moving all but

the largest libraries into shared buildings.Hay will be no exception – we either move the library into shared accommodation or lose it altogether. So the plans for the new school,

made available for everyone to see at September’s public consultation,

offer one way of keeping our library.Let’s hope Hay Town Council

can help bring it about.

Wild in March Protectingwildlife for the future

I have never had a good view of a wild polecat, but have seen a few dead on local roads. A long time ago I shared an old house with a couple who kept ferrets as pets. They were wonderfully quick and agile and funny when racing around the kitchen.

Ferrets are domesticated polecats and vary in appearance from the familiar yellow to something very like the wild form – near black with a strikingly masked face. For 2000 years people have kept them to bolt rabbits.

Genuine wild polecats have their stronghold in Wales, and are thought to be spreading more into England. As well as rabbits they take small mammals, birds, amphibians and earthworms. In winter they may visit farm buildings and catch rats.

This year the Vincent Wildlife Trust from its office in Brecon is running a survey to monitor the distribution of polecats in Britain. They will also analyse carcases to find out where escaped ferrets are hybridising with the wild population. If you see,

or better still, photograph a polecat, or find a dead one, please contact David Jermyn on 01874 623724 or email [email protected].

Hay Spring FairA new event is launching this Easter in the grounds of Hay Castle that aims to help you save money, reduce your bills, and support the community we live in. Hay Spring Fair is taking place on Saturday 12th April with fun activities for all the family.

This one day event will comprise talks from inspirational, knowledgeable figures in the field of green innovations, stalls and workshops from experts providing advice and information, and activities to help you get stuck in and learn about a new craft or technology. In addition there will be stalls from some of the best local and ethical businesses in the area, and some wonderfully tasty food and drink. So far the line-up includes some great workshops including craft sessions, wildflower garden sowing and how to make your own natural beauty products. We’ll have demos from alternative energy providers, low energy transport and local foraging walks.

The event is organised by Andrew and Louise from Hay’s fair trade shop, Eighteen Rabbit, and has received support from the Sustainable Development Fund of Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

We’d love to hear from any Hay residents or businesses with ideas about how they could get involved – we want this year to be the beginning of an annual event in Hay.

Beyond the Reach of Empire

Published by Pen and Sword Books

www.pen-and-sword.co.uk

In the early 1880s the Mahdi unleashed a

spectacularly successful jihadist uprising against

Egyptian colonial rule in the Sudan. By the spring of

1884, Cairo bowed to British pressure to withdraw.

Beyond the Reach of Empire describes how Major

General Charles Gordon was despatched to

evacuate Khartoum and turn the Sudan over to

self-rule, explains how and why the Gordon mission

backfired then homes in on Sir Garnet Wolseley’s

planning and execution of the long-delayed Gordon

Relief Expedition, which arrived only two days after

the city had fallen and Gordon had been killed.

Colonel Mike Snook’s narrative is characterised by

scrupulous attention to detail, an instinctive grasp

of the period and an intimate understanding of its

setting. The Hay-on-Wye author argues compellingly

that the Khartoum affair was mismanaged from the

outset. The outcome

is the exoneration of

Gordon, the man cast

in the role of scapegoat,

and an indictment of

Wolseley’s generalship

over the course of the

last and most deeply

flawed campaign of his

career.

The Hay-on-Wye author argues compellingly that the Khartoum affair was mismanaged from the outset.

Make the most of Winter Light

Please mention the Local Beacon when responding to adverts- 21 -

The lucky people who live in the Wye Local and Local Beacon areas are enveloped by some of the UK’s best scenery. Our appreciation of the landscape is increased if we can capture it in an effective photo – and the good news is that winter’s the best time to do it.

The word photography originates from the Greek words photos, meaning light, and graphos, to draw. The first part’s crucial – put simply, to get a great photo you need great light. Although winter brings many dull days with very little light at all, when it’s good it can be very good indeed. The low, cold light throws long shadows which emphasise texture and perspective, separating our hills, and the leafless trees let through plenty of light instead of blocking it.

Resist the temptation to buy new gear specially. Use a camera you know well. Always look round the viewfinder before clicking the shutter, seeing what the camera will see and eliminating anything which doesn’t help the photo.

The most common reason why photos fail is camera shake. So get to know where the shutter speed is

Make the Most of Winter Light shown on your camera, and try not to let it fall too low. If it does, use a tripod or steady the camera on a wall or gate. And a photo-editing program will keep you warm on cold nights…

Fashion TrendsIt is difficult to pin-point the trends of the new Spring / Summer 2014 season. It is bursting with diverse ideas from delicate lace to distressed denim, floral to tribal prints and as for colour the catwalks shimmered like a rainbow. Although a bit of freedom from the commands of the new season’s ‘must have items’ is liberating, a little bit of direction would be nice..

Colour of all forms drenched the S/S 14 shows, with head to toe primaries and colour blocking brights. The best way to wear them is to pick up a bright coat. This season they are practical too, think deep pockets and hoods! The finest ones will come with a belt, essential to giving you that hourglass shape us ladies lust after. If colourful outerwear is a little too much, bring in a splash of colour in your accessories. RawHide stock the most fantastic coloured clutch bags perfect for that POP of brightness.

Denim will be MASSIVE this year too, hurrah! Freshen it up with dungarees, turn-ups and a little sparkle, just team with the shoe of the moment - the trainer (try the skater version). For the boys take your denim as light as you dare, keep them sat on the hips with legs that taper to the ankle. The best bit boys is the more you wear them the better they will look as they soften and fade with age!

For me, this season’s KEY BUY is the pleated skirt. The perfect one will ripple with sharp pleats, taking you from day to night. Try to keep the fabric minimal if you are on the petite side and/or have rounded hips, this will avoid drowning/emphasising your frame. For the freshest look opt for a cotton, narrow pleated, midi length option. I found mine at the Hay Does Vintage event last December but Zara and Whistles have a great selection too. If all else fails and it’s still raining Number 2 have some pretty calf length wellies, perfect to splash about in.

Interested in joining a choir?Formed in 1969 and based In the Gwernyfed Rugby Club at Talgarth in the foothills of the Black Mountains and in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the choir has a membership of 50. Many are ex -rugby players. Our purpose is to sing, entertain and enjoy ourselves in doing so. We are proud to carry on the tradition of Male Voice Choirs in Wales and have travelled throughout England and Wales but also to Scotland and on the continent in Belgium, France, Spain and Holland. We have sung at the Albert Hall in London, the Menin Gate in Ypres and the Millenium Centre and St David’s Hall in Cardiff. This May we are singing in a Choir Festival in Co Mayo in Ireland. During its existence the choir has raised over £1million for various local and national charities.

Talgarth Choir as we are usually called is over 40 years old and is well established. We are always on the look out for new members who enjoy singing. Making the initial step takes a bit of courage and so here are some answers to some queries you might have.

Do I need to be able to read music?

No. Apart from the Conductor and the accompanist the vast majority of us can’t.

What type of voice do I have to have?

There is no voice test. We invite you to sit in with the tenors and then the bass section till you find out where you are comfortable. That is how we all found out which section to adopt.

What nights do you rehearse?

One night a week - Monday at Gwernyfed Rugby Club 7.45pm to 10pm

Does it cost me anything?

Current subs are £20 a year payable in January and when you become established there is a contribution towards the uniform.

What about commitment?

Obviously work and family commitments come first but regular attendance at practices is essential so that we can learn the repertoire as a choir.

What do you sing?

We are a Welsh choir so we sing some Welsh hymns and songs and there are people in the choir who help with pronunciation. Some choristers come from over the border in Herefordshire and they cope well. We also sing ballads (old and new), spirituals and songs from the shows.

What will I get out of it?

The best people to ask are the choristers. You will have fun and make friends for sure. You will get the opportunity to travel within the area and sometimes further afield – even abroad on times. Basically it’s up to you.

Still interested?

Look on our website www.talgarthmalechoir.com talk to a choir member you know or ring the secretary on 01874 625140.

Problem jobs? Phil Swaine HandymanDon’t think of me as someone who just puts up

pictures, mirrors and shelves or assembles your flat-

pack furniture, because although I can do all that,

there is so much more besides.

With twenty years experience of DIY and property

maintenance, both inside and out, it’s probably

easier to list the things I don’t do, rather than

a long list of the things I can (for instance I don’t

do roofing, flooring/carpeting, major electrical and

plumbing work and I’m not afraid to tell you you’ll

need a specialist if I don’t have a particular skill). I

often work closely with holiday cottage owners,

providing internal and external property and

garden maintenance, being on hand to sort out any

problems as they arise in the owner’s absence.

I can carry out simple plumbing tasks, such as

replacing tap washers or whole taps, and simple

electrics such as replacing power points, light fittings

or switches, and even a bit of patch plastering.

But I don’t just carry out small jobs - I’ve built stone

walls, laid patios, built hearths and re-pointed walls;

lime washed and painted houses inside and out, and

re-planned and re-laid gardens. In conjunction with

my wife Jaye, who is a qualified garden designer, we

also now offer a new garden and internal design

service.

So if that job is still waiting to be done, please give

me a call.

Do you want to see new places in beautiful countryside and help to clean it up?

By the time you read this, river levels will hopefully have dropped enough for us to go and pick up the litter from the banks of the River Wye. We are looking for volunteers to come and help keep our river banks clean.

We provide: Litter pickers, bags and gloves, and we dispose of the rubbish. We do not go near the river unless onto a beach – normally it’s picking rubbish from the flood lines. Volunteers need to be reasonably fit, wear wellies and suitable clothing and bring their own lunch. Each session normally lasts about 4 – 5 hours.

Provisional dates are as follows: Saturday 1st March, Tuesday 4th March, Saturday 8th March, Tuesday 11th March, Saturday 15th March

Areas we cover: The Llynfi system, Wye Glasbury to Mordiford and the Monnow system.

For anyone with canoes – my target dates are (we will choose one day of:-) 28/29/30 March. Hay to The Boat Inn at Whitney on Wye. 5/6 April. The Boat Inn to Cannon Bridge. 12/13 April. Cannon Bridge to Luckshall. (subject to permissions/weather). This will be to retrieve rubbish from the water only.

For those that would be interested to go out on the Monnow catchment, please contact Rob Denny on 01432 880636 or [email protected] or [email protected]

To take part in the Wye Glasbury to Luggsmouth clear up, contact the Wye & Usk Foundation on 01874 711714 or [email protected]

We have the full co-operation of Powys, Monmouthshire and Herefordshire County Councils, and Keep Wales Tidy have agreed to

support us where they can, and the River Wye Preservation Trust have supported us again.

Let’s make a start!!

Hay-on-Wye Dark Skies Festival 21st - 23rd March 2014

In the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains

The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the darkest areas in the Wales to observe the night sky. It is easily accessible by road links to South Wales, and mid-Wales and the midlands of England and represents one of the best dark sky sites in southern Britain. In general the area of the National Park is very dark with stars down to visual magnitude 6.3 and an average of 6.13 at best visible across the whole of the park. The faintest recorded observation was magnitude 6.41.

Hay-on-Wye is a welcoming base from which to be introduced to the excitement, pleasures and rewards of meeting with astronomy enthusiasts, observing stars and benefitting from the area’s dark skies.

The Dark Sky Festival offers opportunities for

children, those new to the science and enthusiasts.

It offers a small planetarium experience and visits

to a mainstream Planetarium. There will be lectures

from experts on how to observe the skies, what to

look for in both daylight and the dark skies. There

are lectures from experts on how astronomy has

enabled the world to be navigated, how to use

telescopes in the daylight and at night and get

amazing results. There is also an opportunity to

observe the sunrise on the equinox line, a twice

yearly occurrence.

All this in the company of those who are eager to

share their knowledge and expertise.

Full information can be found on the websiteat www.darkskiesfestival.org,

all events can be booked online via the website.
