European Projects – key issues• FUNDAMENTALLY : Why do I want EU money ? Is it a politically

accepted priority ? Is my Council / Business prepared for success, but also failure ?

• Is it a Regional, Inter-regional, Cross-border or Trans-national project?

• If Cross-border or Trans-national, which area?

• Partnership (who, how many?)

• Lead Partner financial and legal responsibilities

• Match funding and sharing of management costs

• Timeframe / deadlines

• What can be claimed? What is eligible?

Page 11: Www.seeda.co.uk Accessing European Funding 21st February 2011 Cams Hall/Fareham - PUSH EU Funding Opportunities & Constructing a successful application

www.seeda.co.uk

The partnership• Partners, sub-partners and observers (Triple Helix?)• Linguistics and Cultural realities• Why are these the right partners for this project?• Leave enough time for letters of support / intend!

• Five Letters - Trust

The project structure – what information should be included?

Set out a clear project structure:– Aim– Objectives– work packages (reflecting cross border or

transnational set up)– Actions (who works with whom??)– Outputs (quantifiable / non-quantifiable)

Page 13: Www.seeda.co.uk Accessing European Funding 21st February 2011 Cams Hall/Fareham - PUSH EU Funding Opportunities & Constructing a successful application

www.seeda.co.uk

The application form

• Link cash with outcomes

• Keep sentences short and reduce technical jargon!

• Find an independent proof-reader before submitting

Page 14: Www.seeda.co.uk Accessing European Funding 21st February 2011 Cams Hall/Fareham - PUSH EU Funding Opportunities & Constructing a successful application

www.seeda.co.uk

The budget • Supply information under budget headings: (staff,

administrative, external expertise, travel, equipment, investments, other)

• Budgets should be comparable across the partnership, but not necessarily equal

• Link into ‘live’ investments• Must allow for joint activities• Calculate and communicate partners’ management

share

Page 15: Www.seeda.co.uk Accessing European Funding 21st February 2011 Cams Hall/Fareham - PUSH EU Funding Opportunities & Constructing a successful application

www.seeda.co.uk

Other key tips• Don't miss out any key information (partners' details, letters of

support, partnership agreements…)• Plan to submit a few days early (deadlines are strictly

enforced!)• Annexes should be restricted to maps (if helpful) and

decision-making flowchart or organigram• Project quality is most important; a good form does not

excuse a bad project!• Don’t underestimate the administrative resources needed to

put together a complex EU funding application

Page 16: Www.seeda.co.uk Accessing European Funding 21st February 2011 Cams Hall/Fareham - PUSH EU Funding Opportunities & Constructing a successful application

www.seeda.co.uk

And finally…..• Observe Programme Politics • Lobby & Consult• Communicate • Co-operate• Enjoy delivering the seemingly unachievable• Make the Most of Europe• Help UK PLC to get the Money Back from Brussels
