2016 SCHEDULE/RESULTS JOHN CAIN FAMILY SOFTBALL FIELD • MARCH 19-20 • COMMERCE, TEXAS

TEXAS A&M-COMMERCEThe Lions enter the weekend with an overall record of 22-6 with a 8-4 mark in LSC play following a series win over Texas A&M-Kingsville last weekend in Commerce.

TAMUC is led by second year head coach Richie Bruister who started the program prior to the 2015 campaign, leading the team to the LSC Tournament. Bruister is no stranger to the LSC, leading Texas Woman’s to the 2013 College World Series and three NCAA Tournament appearances in five season in Denton.

The Lions are led offensively by defending LSC Player of the Week Luci Ponce who is hitting .388 this season with eight homeruns and 38 RBI for a slugging% of .755. In the circle, Commerce is paced by Brittany Woolridge who is 8-2 on the season with a 2.64 ERA to go along with 42 strikeouts in her 61 innings of work with a .257 opponent batting average.

TAMUC is hitting .335 as a team to go along with 42 doubles, six triples, 24 homeruns and 196 RBI for a team slugging percentage of .494 with 39 combined errors for a fielding clip of .951 while stealing 108 bases this season. In the circle, TAMUC has a 3.65 combined ERA with seven complete games and two shutouts with 132 strikeouts in 182 innings with an opposing batting average of .255.

NFCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (MAR. 16)The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs remain atop of the newest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Wednesday morning by the association’s offices in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Lady Buffs picked up15 of the possible 16 first place votes for a total of 399 points followed by Indianapolis (1 first place, 384), Alabama-Huntsville (365), Humboldt State (348), Arkansas Tech (336), North Alabama (318), Missouri-St. Louis (308), Georgia College (288), Saint Leo (262) and St. Mary’s (262) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by WT, St.

Mary’s (T-9th), #21 Angelo State (21st) and Cameron (RV).

LSC PITCHER OF THE WEEKWT senior right hander Tori Bayer has been named the Lone Star Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week announced on Monday afternoon by the league’s offices in Richardson, Texas.

Bayer continued to shine in the circle for the top ranked Lady Buffs this past weekend as the senior right-hander tossed 7.2 scoreless innings of relief in three contests to pick up a pair of wins along with a save with a 0.00 ERA against #22 Angelo State. The Floresville, Texas moved to 8-0 on the season to go along with her league leading fourth save of the season. Bayer picked up wins in game two and four with her save coming in game three during an LSC weekend sweep of the rival #22 Belles. She allowed just six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in her 7.2 innings of work with an opposing batting average of .231.

NATIONALLY SPEAKING (MAR. 15)The Lady Buffs have the nation’s top offense with a .392 team batting average, 9.79 runs per game, a .694 slugging percentage and .502 on base percentage while being one of two undefeated teams in DII Softball.

– WT ranks third with 1.61 homeruns per game while coming in fourth with 2.25 doubles per contest.

– Freshman outfielder Kourtney Coveney is 22nd in the country with a batting average of .491 while senior Stacey Ramirez ranks 10th in runs per game (1.29). Fellow senior Tori Bayer is third in the nation in saves this season with four.

– Sophomore outfielder Ashley Hardin leads the Lady Buffs with 10 home runs which ranks seventh in the nation. WT has three players in the Top-20 in RBI this season with Lacey Taylor (12th, 34), Brittany Cruz (14th, 32) and Hardin in 19th with 30.

A LOOK BACK (ST. EDWARD’S)The top ranked Lady Buffs continued the nation’s longest Division II win streak on Wednesday after-noon as they used strong performances in the circle to outlast the Hilltoppers of St. Edward’s at Diane Daniels Field in Austin, Texas. Allie Smith’s sacrafile fly in the fourth inning proved to be enough in the opener as Chelsea Skipper (5-0) picked up the win while Kilee Halbert registered her first save of the season in a 1-0 decision. Hardin drove in three runs in the nightcap as Alexis Alfonso (5-0) picked up the win while Bayer added to her LSC lead for saves with five in a 5-2 victory as the Lady Buffs improved to 30-0 on the season.

TRADITION NEVER GRADUATESThe Lady Buffs return nine letter-winners from last season’s LSC Championship team that registered an overall record of 45-11, All-American selec-tions Lacey Taylor, Stacey Ramirez and Allie Smith highlight the talented returning group that have led WT to back-to-back LSC Titles. Taylor and Ramirez are joined by Brittany Gehle, Tori Bayer and Andrea Sitter for a senior class that looks to become the winningest in program history as they have reg-istered a 149-31 (82.8%) mark over the last three seasons in Canyon.

HOME SWEET HOMEThe Lady Buffs have turned Schaeffer Park in Canyon into one of the top home environments in all of NCAA Division II Softball. WT is 160-26 (.860) at Schaeffer Park since the facility opened prior to the 2011 season including 64-12 (.842) during regular season Lone Star Conference games in Canyon. 2015 marked the fourth time in the last five years (‘11, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15) that the Lady Buffs hosted NCAA Postseason action in Canyon.

MAKING HISTORYThe Lady Buffs became the fastest team in Division II to reach the 30-win plateau this season while becoming just be 19th team in DII History to register a win streak of atleast 30 games as they are currently tied for 10th with Sacred Heart (1990) and Kennesaw State (1999). The 30-game win streak is the longest in Lone Star Conference history and the longest ever in the current South Central Region (Lone Star, Heartland, RMAC).

2016 LSC LEADERS (MAR. 17)



Having been hired to re-start West Texas A&M softball following a 24-year absence, Kevin Blaskowski has wasted little time in building the Lady Buffs into a

perennial national title contender. In 10 years at the helm, he has registered a 365-230 mark, recorded five NCAA tournament berths and an overall record of 717-507 over 23 seasons. While at WT, Blaskowski has claimed three Lone Star Conference title, two LSC Tournament Title, two South Central Regional Cham-pionships, a South Central Super Regional Title and the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship. The Lady Buffs continued their dominance in 2015 as Blaskowski led the program to their second straight and third overall Lone Star Conference Championship as they finished the season 45-11 with a 22-6 mark in LSC play. WT made national news during the 2015 season, remaining the top team in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll for a record 56-straight weeks (2/26/14 - 3/25/15). WT led the nation in four offensive statustical categories during the 2015 season while also hitting 102 homeruns to become the first team in Division II history to reach the century mark in back-to-back years after hitting 105 bombs in 2014. Senior outfielder Renee Erwin concluded her incredible collegiate career in style as the Anna, Texas native became the first player in history to be named a back-to-back winner of the Daktronics Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award. 2014 saw the Lady Buffs capture the program’s first ever NCAA Division II National Championship as WT topped perennial power Valdosta State in a Memorial Day thriller at the Moyers Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia. The Lady Buffs finished their dream season with an overall record of 60-7, becoming just the fourth team in NCAA history to win a title while also reaching the 60-win mark (Cal State Northridge-1985; Augustana-1991; North Dakota State-2000). Blaskowski and his staff were rewarded for their efforts on the diamond, being named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year while Coach B also picked up Lone Star Confer-ence Coach of the Year accolades. Coach B reached another career milestone in 2013 as he claimed his 600th career victory against St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas on April 14th. The 2012 season saw the Lady Buffs make another appearance in the LSC Tournament before falling to rival Angelo State in the semifinal round, WT just missed out on the NCAA Postseason, finishing the season with an overall record of 35-18. Blaskowski reached a personal milestone on February 19, 2012 as he coached his 1,000th career game in a win over New Mexico Highlands in Canyon. The 2011 season saw the Lady Buffs make a historic run to their first ever South Central Regional Championship as they finished the season with an overall record of 50-18. WT claimed the program’s first ever Lone Star Confer-ence Tournament Championship in 2011. Blaskowski also reached a personal milestone in 2011, claiming his 500th career victory on March 5 in a 15-2 win over Eastern New Mexico at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon, the win was also special for WT’s centerfielder Kim LeComte who hit for the first cycle in program history. The Lady Buffs finished the 2010 season with a 45-18 overall record and ad-vanced to the NCAA South Central Region Finals. Blaskowski was honored as the Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year. Blaskowski was hired in December of 2004 to bring back the softball program to WTAMU’s campus after a 24 year absence. Blaskowski came to WT from Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico University where he served as the head coach for one year. Prior to ENMU, Blaskowski coached at Southern Arkansas University for five years, where he started the SAU softball program and led them to the postseason in each of his five years. In 2003, SAU was the Co-Champion of the West Division in the Gulf South Conference with

a 31-19 overall record and a 19-4 conference mark. While at SAU, Blaskowski served as a member of the NCAA Division II South Region rating committee in addition to being named Gulf South Confer-ence Co-Coach of the Year in 2000. Blaskowski also has served as the head coach at Phillips Univer-sity from 1996-1998. He started the program at Phillips which qualified for postseason play in each of its two seasons before the school closed in 1998. He was also the head coach at Washburn Univer-sity in Topeka, Kan., and Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kan. Blaskowski received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Physical Education from Valley City State University in North Dakota in 1986. He completed a Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Health, Physi-cal Education and Recreation at Emporia State University in Kansas in 1989. Blaskowski and his beautiful wife, April, are the parents of two daughters, Kaelyn Rose and Kelsey Rhea.
