Winter is here and the School of Art wants you to come in from the cold and be creative! Our Winter 2011 class booklet is like a collage – a collection of new classes and workshopsthat includes encaustic painting, printmaking, fiber dying, jewelry collage, and Drawing with Power - a teen-focused drawing course. We still have our popular favorites plus a new Spring Break Art Camp, featuring fun and artistic ways for your child to spend their week of down time.

WSS is pleased to announce a two- day workshop featuring award-winning artist Michael Chesley Johnson focusing on the fundamentals of painting outdoors. Johnson is an oil and pastel painter working primarily in the American Southwest and the Canadian Maritimes. Elected a Master Pastellist by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, he is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a juried member of Oil Painters of America. Johnson is the author of Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Oil & Pastel and Through a Painter’s Brush: A Year on Campobello Island. The artist also writes regularly for The Pastel Journal and The Artist’s Magazine.

Clay Beginning Ceramics On the Wheel! (Ages 16+)
Create pottery learning basic wheel throwing techniques. During this six-week class we will discuss, explore and practice basic wheel throwing techniques and see where it takes you! Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, Water Street Studios has electric wheels, bats and tools for class use. Follow your passion to work with clay! Figure Sculpture - Straight to the Model (Intermediate to Advanced) This is a great class for those wishing to further their understanding of the human form. In this 5-week class we start right away with a live model working from a single pose for the duration, with an emphasis on human anatomy and structure. Prior experience working with water-based clay recommended. Teens welcome with permission. Minimum 4 students.

Drawing Drawing with Power (Ages 13-18) This is a drawing studio designed for young adults
who wish to learn and develop drawing skills - basic to advance. The instructor will help facilitate discovery and development by using still life, or other images that may be inspiring - such as photography or drawings from favorite artists. Using traditional drawing mediums such as pencil, charcoal, conte or pastel, we will learn to interpret our subject into an indi-vidual expression. Basic principles of gesture capture, as well as line quality, composition, contour, and light and shadow will be explored. Please come to the studio with drawing materials and a favorite object to add to the still life.

Playing in the Mud Workshop for Kids (Ages 7-12) In this two-day workshop students will be introduced to the basics of hand-built ceram-ic techniques. We will learn pinch, coil, and slab construction and create three fabulous projects. Students will have the opportunity to try out the wheel and dig their hands into clay to see what they can create. Workshops Encaustic Painting: Explorations in Wax
Beginners and advanced painters will enjoy exploring this versatile and uniquely organic hot wax painting medium, in use since ancient times. Students will learn about materials, studio set up and basic recipes and techniques. There will be ample time for the student to experiment and fi nish a project or two. Materials will be provided, however, the student is encouraged to bring photographs, fabric bits, or small items that can be imbedded in the wax to create a collage. Learn How To Draw AnythingIf you can write your signature, you can learn how to draw! Really! Drawing is a learnable skill, like riding a bicycle. Basic drawing techniques such as line quality, shading and placement, and advanced concepts such as proportion, composition and perspective are covered in this fun and comprehensive class. Bring an 11x17 drawing tablet, drawing pencil, and eraser to first class. Additional materials list given at first class.

JewelryModern Jewelry Collage (Ages 16+)
This four-week class will focus on cold con-nections as design choices for fabricating jewelry. Students will learn to design and construct pieces using tabs, rivets and wire. Create highly personalized pieces using traditional and non-traditional materials. A wide array of items will be available but students are encouraged to bring their materials and objects for inclusion in their own meaningful assemblages. Students will complete two to four pieces. Prerequisite: Metalsmithing for Jewelry Fabrication.

Introduction to Fused Glass (Ages 16+)In this class you will learn basic fused glass techniques to create a pendant, magnet or tie tack. Students choose which two projects they want to complete. Metalsmithing for Jewelry Fabrication (Ages 16+)Design and create one-of-a-kind personalized jewelry. Explore jewelry fabrication using basic metalsmithing techniques. This four-week course will cover sawing, piercing, sanding, hand stamping, texturing, forming, and finishing. Each week you will create at least one unique piece of copper or sterling silver jewelry. Projects may include earrings, pendants, bracelets, or rings. Metal to complete at least four projects is included in the class fee. Students have access to studio tools and equipment. Beginners PMC Jewelry (Ages 16+) No prior knowledge and/or skills needed to work with this remarkable medium. Awesome Earrings For Beginners (Ages 13+)This is an excellent beginners class that will teach you the fundamental techniques to create awesome earrings. Once you master loop forming and a little bit of wire wrap-ping you can make countless pairs of earrings. These earrings are great for gift giving! In the class you will receive all supplies necessary for up to three pairs of pierced dangle earrings with sterling silver and various beads. Tai Ji Quan was developed during 13th Century China by a Taoist monk, Chang San-Feng, as a powerful martial art. Those who practiced this art found not only their martial skills, but their overall health was improving. Tai Ji Quan can assist in regulating blood pressure, anxiety, depression, balance, circulation, stress, and self esteem. Class consists of Qi Gong (energy work), Tai Ji 8 posture form, and applications. Any fitness level is accepted.

Painting Oil Painting (Ages 17+)
For painters of all levels, skills and disciplines, the focus of this class is to nurture the individual creative process. Color mixing and basic oil painting techniques will be covered. Participants will explore traditional and alternative styles in oil painting while developing an understanding of basic drawing and composition skills. Emphasis is placed on discovering individual strengths and styles that will enable each to complete a final painting reflecting those characteristics. The Basics of Watercolor Painting (Ages 17+)This class is for beginners and those wanting to expand their interest in watercolor painting. We will make watercolor fun and exciting - not difficult. Students will concentrate on the basics of producing a good painting starting with sketching skills, perspective, composition, values and techniques. Students will explore various directions from still life to landscape. Still life materials will be available or you may paint your favorite landscape.

Oil Painting TechniquesFor anyone who wishes to brush up on basic oil painting techniques, we will focus on producing “mini-works” that demonstrate different techniques. These may include glaz-ing, impasto, dry brush, and simple blending and shading techniques. We will work from a single object or shape to easily visualize the different effects that can be achieved simply by changing the application. Color mixing and brush use will also be covered.

Creating Murals (Ages 15+)Learn how to paint murals from the ground up! Starting with sketches, students will work collaboratively and create something really BIG, hand painted, right on the wall for everyone to see. Photography Photographic Fundamentals
Ready to move past the snapshot? Have you ever asked yourself, “So I have this camera, what do I do now?” Do you want to take one of those images that capture the essence of a subject? In this class we will explore how to photographically discover the extraordinary in the ordinary world. Learn how to convey what your subject wants to say through your photographic image. Participants will need a camera (camera phone, point and shoot, DSLR or film camera) and access to the computer and Internet. VarietyControlling the Spark (Ages 18+)
In this class you will learn the fundamental skills of sculptural metal fabrication. This can be a class for beginners who have never worked with metal, or experienced artists who want to brush up on their skills. Students will present their sculpture ideas, learn how to advance their concept into a 3-D form and complete a finished product. In this class students will learn to use the tools associated with metal working such as a Mig welder, angle grinder, chop saw, and jig saw to develop their artistic design. Thanks to a grant from the Com-munity Foundation of the Fox River Valley, Water Street Studios has been able to purchase welding equipment for class use. Instructor Steven Lockwood

Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? (Ages 13+)We will be creating wonderfully imaginative wire and polymer clay sculptures in this class. Students will start out with a concept and transfer it to paper. The process then continues with creating a wire form, adding tinfoil to exaggerate features, applying multi-layers of clay and baking the creation in the oven. Finishing techniques will also be explored.

Photoshop: Imaging for Print Photoshop Basics. Image adjusting and retouching for print or web. This class provides more of an open question workshop environment rather than traditional classroom setting. Bring in your own images! Will customize instruction to fit your goals and interests. To include: basic image adjustment using curves and levels; selecting and outlining; special effects with layers. Prerequisite: basic skills and a laptop with Adobe CS.

Relief Printmaking (Ages 13+) Relief printing is a form of expression in which the surface of a block yields the image and the areas that do not print are cut away. It is the oldest form of printmaking and is used to communicate ideas through symbols, imagery and printed words. Ink is rolled onto the block, paper is placed upon it and pressure is applied to transfer ink from block to paper. This class will focus on woodcut relief print techniques to create engaging imagery. Required materials: 5 piece Mikisyo Power Grip woodcarving tool set. Recommended ma-terials: sketchbook, pencil, fine and extra fine point Sharpie marker, and soft rubber brayer.

The Language of Light - Opening Up Your Vision through Digital PhotographyThis workshop is less about camera mechanics and more about finding depth and meaning in your photography by reexamining the creative process. This is a hands-on casual class that will explore the different styles and methods of creating photographs through dem-onstrations, examples, shooting exercises and assignments. Participants will learn to use light, exposure and compositional techniques as ways of connecting with their subject and creating a strong visual statement. Since fine light is the main ingredient of photography, field experiences to shoot in low or angled light and to search for patterns, motion, abstrac-tions, reflections, will be offered. An important goal of this class is to develop a strong personal style, deepen your vision and find new paths and creative outlets not only for your photographs but whatever your medium of choice. Star Wars Themed ClassesStar Wars: An Art Experience (Ages 6-11)
A long time ago in a galaxy not that far away Star Wars came to Water Street Studios and is returning due to popular demand. This is a really fun and entertaining class that combines art projects with games, as well as food activities. We will drink sith soda and eat clone trooper cupcakes as well as create portraits of our favorite characters and Tatooine torn paper collages. Students will also design and build their own droids and to top it all off participate in a jedi training session with lightsabers we make ourselves.

This class is a topsy-turvy mix of fine arts projects, delicious snacks, and Rabbit Hole activities. Join us in the adventure of using clay to create our own teacups and teapots, illustrating unique big/small drawings, and building beautiful miniature shadow boxes. We will also work on Artist Trading Cards that will rival the Queen’s guards. In the last class we will watch Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland while enjoying a Mad Hat-ter-style tea party. Muggles Making Art (Ages 7-12)Come join us at Water Street Studios as we hop the train to Hogwarts. This exciting class gives the true Harry Potter experience. We will split into the different houses and follow along with the different courses offered at Hogwarts. There will be a “potions and herbology” lesson along with transfigu-ration, defense against the dark arts, and care of magical creatures’ courses. We will create fabulous art while playing games such as Hoo’s Hedwig and eating chocolate “frog” snacks.

Playing in the Mud Workshop for Kids (Ages 7-12) In this two-day workshop students will be introduced to the basics of hand-built ceram-ic techniques. We will learn pinch, coil, and slab construction and create three fabulous projects. Students will have the opportunity to try out the wheel and dig their hands into clay to see what they can create. WorkshopsEncaustic Painting: Explorations in Wax
Beginners and advanced painters will enjoy exploring this versatile and uniquely organic hot wax painting medium, in use since ancient times. Students will learn about materials, studio set up and basic recipes and techniques. There will be ample time for the student to experiment and finish a project or two. Materials will be provided, however, the student is encouraged to bring photographs, fabric bits, or small items that can be imbedded in the wax to create a collage. Illustrator Logo Workshop or “How to get a logo without a big white box around it” For the ‘do it yourselfer’ that needs a little help to clean up or finish that vector logo or graphic in Adobe Illustrator. If you’re not clear on what this means, all your questions will be answered. You will be coached on preparing a perfect scalable master graphic for any printer. Our sessions will provide more of an open question workshop environment rather than traditional classroom setting. Skills covered: Basic drawing and shape tools, Choos-ing and modifying fonts, colors and gradients, and essential print production knowledge. Prerequisite: basic skills and a laptop with Adobe CS.

Ceramics for the Garden - Gone to the Birds!Gorgeous gardens include ART as part of the design. Creative Ladies Night Out Schedule a night with five or more of your girl friends for a Creative Ladies Night out. We will make two small art projects while enjoying appetizers and refreshments. Project ideas include: Handmade envelopes, postcard plaques, decoupage bottles, wired hanging bot-tles/bud vases, photo frames, silverware charms, small accordion books, or recycled wool flower pins. Projects to be determined at class registration. Refreshments include water and non-alcoholic beverages. Appetizers will be an assortment of chips, dips and sweets.

Painting En Plein Air (Ages 18+)Join award-winning artist Michael Chesley Johnson for two days of painting outdoors in beautiful Batavia. Johnson will focus on fundamentals for painting outdoors - how to begin, how to proceed and how to finish. The workshop will include demonstrations in oil and pastel, plenty of time for student work, plus critiques. Johnson gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. In the event of bad weather, students will paint in the studio. Michael Chesley Johnson is an oil and pastel painter working in the American Southwest and the Canadian Maritimes. Elected a Master Pastellist by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, he is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a juried member of Oil Painters of America.
