Name ___________________________________________ Date ________________________________ Core ____ Writing Topic Sentences Based on Thesis Statements A good thesis statement should include the essay topic, your opinion about the topic, and three reasons your opinion is correct. Each reason should then be developed into the topic sentence of a body paragraph. Thesis Statement Example: Controlling the pet population through spaying and neutering is very important, because it helps prevent the birth of unwanted and neglected animals, a financial burden for pet owners, and it reduces the numbers of animals living on the streets. Topic Sentence 1: By stopping their pets from breeding, owners help to make sure all newborn pets are wanted and cared for properly. Topic Sentence 2: Pet owners can save money by spaying and neutering their pets. Topic Sentence 3: Spaying and neutering pets reduces the numbers of homeless animals. DIRECTIONS: First, record five of the thesis statements you constructed on the “Writing Thesis Statements” worksheet. Then, write three topic sentences based on each thesis statement. You should modify the wording somewhat when you transform your reasons into topic sentences. Writing Topic Sentences Based on Thesis Statements
