We welcome you today, and always, just as you are: content or wiggly, confused or confident. In this
bulletin the whole congregation says the texts in bold. Page numbers refer to the Book of Common
Prayer, which is the smaller black book, however everything you would need for this service is in this
bulletin. Hymns listed with just a number are found in the RED hymnal. All directions for sitting and
standing are ‘as you are able’, because we welcome you just as you are.
If you need assistance of any kind, ask a neighbor or an usher.
We share Holy Communion every Sunday that we can, and we invite all Christians to share in this
mystery given by Jesus to all his people across time and planet. If you would like to know more about
Christ Church and how we practice the Christian faith in this time and place, we invite you to fill out a
pew card and place it in the offering plate.

PRELUDE
O Food to Pilgrims Given Johannes Brahms
OPENING HYMN Come, thou fount of every blessing (8AM, vs. 1-3) H686
OPENING SENTENCE
The Officiant says
To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, because we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed
the voice of the Lord our God by following his laws which he set before us. Daniel 9:9, 10
CONFESSION OF SIN (BCP p. 79)
The Officiant says to the people
Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his
praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary
for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us
kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his
infinite goodness and mercy.
Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Priest alone stands and says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all
goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

ANTHEM
Guide My Feed arr. John Carter
PSALM: Psalm 95
1Come, let us sing to the LORD; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
3For the LORD is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
4In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.
5The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.
6Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the LORD our Maker.
7For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
8Harden not your hearts,
as your forebears did in the wilderness, *
at Meribah, and on that day at Massah,
when they tempted me.
9They put me to the test, *
though they had seen my works.
10Forty years long I detested that generation and said, *
“This people are wayward in their hearts;
they do not know my ways.”
5
11So I swore in my wrath, *
“They shall not enter into my rest.”
At the end of the Psalm is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
The Lessons
FIRST READING: Exodus 17:1-7
The people sit.
A Reading from the book of Exodus.
1From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD
commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2The people quarreled
with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do
you test the LORD?” 3But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said,
“Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” 4So Moses cried out
to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5The LORD said to Moses,
“Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with
which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock,
and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the
LORD among us or not?”

FIRST CANTICLE
Canticle 14: A Song of Penitence
Kyrie Pantokrator
Prayer of Manasseh 1-2, 4, 6-7, 11-15
O Lord and Ruler of the hosts of heaven, *
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
and of all their righteous offspring:
You made the heavens and the earth, *
with all their vast array.
All things quake with fear at your presence; *
they tremble because of your power.
But your merciful promise is beyond all measure; *
it surpasses all that our minds can fathom.
O Lord, you are full of compassion, *
long-suffering, and abounding in mercy.
You hold back your hand; *
you do not punish as we deserve.
6
In your great goodness, Lord,
you have promised forgiveness to sinners, *
that they may repent of their sin and be saved.
And now, O Lord, I bend the knee of my heart, *
and make my appeal, sure of your gracious goodness.
I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned, *
and I know my wickedness only too well.
Therefore I make this prayer to you: *
Forgive me, Lord, forgive me.
Do not let me perish in my sin, *
nor condemn me to the depths of the earth.
For you, O Lord, are the God of those who repent, *
and in me you will show forth your goodness.
Unworthy as I am, you will save me,
in accordance with your great mercy, *
and I will praise you without ceasing all the days of my life.
For all the powers of heaven sing your praises, *
and yours is the glory to ages of ages. Amen.
SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-11
The people sit.
A Reading from Paul's letter to the Church in Rome.
1Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have
obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not
only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance
produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has
been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die
for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8But God proves
his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. 9Much more surely then, now that we have
been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were
enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled,
will we be saved by his life. 11But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom we have now received reconciliation.

THIRD READING: John 4:5-42
The people sit.
A Reading from John.
5[Jesus] came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son
Joseph.6Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
7
7A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8(His disciples had gone
to the city to buy food.) 9The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a
woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10Jesus answered her, “If you
knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he
would have given you living water.” 11The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep.
Where do you get that living water? 12Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with
his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty
again, 14but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give
will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this
water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17The woman answered him, “I have no
husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18for you have had five husbands, and
the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19The woman said to him, “Sir, I see
that you are a prophet. 20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people
must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will
worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You worship what you do not know; we worship
what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24God is
spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25The woman said to him, “I know that
Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26Jesus said to
her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.”
27Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said,
“What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” 28Then the woman left her water jar and went back
to the city. She said to the people, 29“Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot
be the Messiah, can he?” 30They left the city and were on their way to him.
31Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32But he said to them, “I have food to eat
that you do not know about.” 33So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something
to eat?” 34Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. 35Do you
not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are
ripe for harvesting. 36The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower
and reaper may rejoice together. 37For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38I sent you to
reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything
I have ever done.” 40So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there
two days. 41And many more believed because of his word. 42They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of
what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the
world.”

Update - No In-Person Worship This Month
Dear Friends of Christ Church, I am writing to you to let you know of requested changes to our worship for the rest of the month.
At the strong request of the civil authorities, health experts, and Bishop Daniel, we will move to digital only services for the rest of the month. We have been asked to limit our gatherings to less than 10 people at a time.
The church is not closing, we will continue, return, proclaim, strive and serve.
¨ We will move to streaming Morning Prayer on Sunday mornings at our normal times of 8 am and 10 am. Morning prayer is a classic pattern of worship, and one that was regularly practiced at CCRP for most of its first 100 years. Please mail in any pledge offerings to the office. Streaming will be on Facebook Live on our CCRP Facebook page for this Sunday (at least). All people with internet can watch videos on Facebook live, and visit our informational FB page, even without an account. One must merely ignore the prompts to sign in!
• We will suspend all food sharing events, so no Wednesday evening supper or program, and no coffee chat/hour.
• We will suspend all in-person formation, so Sunday School, Youth Group, Book Group, and Episcopedia. We are looking into ways to offer interaction and teaching on Wednesdays especially. This may mean utilizing Facebook live, which is accessible even by those who do not belong to Facebook. Stay tuned for those directions.
• We will offer digital Wednesday Evening Prayer or Stations of the Cross at 6 pm.
• Self-Guided Stations are available whenever the church building is open. As long as there are fewer than 10 people in the space, we will be doing our duty.
• We will try to offer streaming Noonday prayer Monday—Thursday.
• We will keep our normal office hours.
• Recovery groups are invited to make their own choices on when to meet or not.
Pray regularly, breathe, sort your heart and soul, and take good care of yourself and your household. If you can, please check in with 7 people this week, especially those who live at home alone or may be medically vulnerable. Ask if they need anything to be gotten for them. Our food cupboard can help, or we can see that this gets taken care of with food delivery services (I can make this happen). Please let me know how I can help.
13
If there is a medical emergency please be sure to contact us. Voicemails on my mailbox send me an email, and if you dial 8 in our system it will send me a text message immediately.
Once again I do encourage daily prayer practices and commend to you these digital options: Mission St. Clare, Morning Prayer from Garrett County, and Forward Movement. If remaining at home is your most comforting option, the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania is keeping a list of churches that will be streaming, the National Cathedral will be doing so this Sunday, and I always commend to you the worship online with St. Paul’s in Fayetteville, Arkansas (I used to serve there).
It will take some time to lean into this new normal. I hope and pray that we will all approach it like the two weeks of snow storms that we did not have this winter. Take it as an extraordinary Lenten journey through the wilderness, and be there for one another (at least virtually).
Above all, pray for our country and our world during this difficult time. Pray for those who are ill, those who cannot work, those who are alone in quarantine, and all who are suffering from the economic disruptions. God is leading us into prayer at this time, and it is a ministry Christians can practice at all times and in all places and conditions on behalf of our neighbors and ourselves. Blessings of Calm and Wellbeing Be with You, and Do Not be Afraid, The Reverend Jane Gober Rector, Christ Church (Episcopal)
Our CCRP Prayer: Gentle us, Holy One, into an unclenched moment, a deep breath, a letting go of heavy experiences, of shriveling anxieties, of dead certainties, that, softened by the silence, surrounded by the light, and open to the mystery; we may be found by wholeness, upheld by the unfathomable, entranced by the simple, and filled with the joy that is you. In the name of the Holy Trinity, One God forever and ever - Amen. (Adapted from a prayer by the Rev’d Ted Loder)
For Quiet Confidence: O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and
rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP)
