welcome world wine awards 2013

Welcome to the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the world’s most trusted and prestigious wine competition.

The 2012 DWWA took place with huge success, welcoming a record-breaking 14,120 wine entries into the competition, a huge increase from the 4,500 entries we received in our first year. Now in its 10th consecutive year, we are very proud of the DWWA and our position as the largest and most influential wine competition in the world.

The competition has gained international admiration for providing a comprehensive and authoritative source of recommendations for everyone, from wine beginners to the most experienced enthusiasts. The success of the DWWA is also, in no small part, due to the respect it is held in by the international wine trade.

So what makes the DWWA unique?A competition is only as good as its judges, and the Decanter World Wine Awards prides itself on recruiting the world’s greatest wine palates, including merchants, sommeliers, critics, wine writers, Masters of Wine, and Master Sommeliers. Each wine is individually assessed as part of our unique and specialised judging process. Our judges rigorously evaluate no more than 85 wines per day, meaning producers can have complete confidence that their wine is being tasted fairly.

We only recruit judges who have an intimate knowledge of a specific region, which we believe is crucial in order to recognise typicity and quality. All wines are tasted blind within their region of origin and price bracket, to ensure like-for-like comparison. Silver medal wines are tasted twice, and all Gold, Regional Trophy, and International Trophy wines can

be tasted up to four times, ensuring our judges take time and careful consideration over each and every wine.

The aim of the DWWA is to shine a spotlight on the world’s best wines, and to shout about the results to an audience of international wine consumers. We wish to enthuse wine lovers with our diversity of award-winning recommendations, whatever the price and whatever their preference. Last year, we hosted over 60 tastings in 27 countries worldwide as part of our Global Tastings event, in partnership with Enomatic. For 2013, we hope to develop this extraordinary series of tastings even further.

It is the trusted relationship that international media brand Decanter has with a worldwide audience of wine lovers that sets the DWWA apart from other competitions. Consumers and trade in 91 countries around the world read Decanter magazine to find out the DWWA results, and Decanter.com is one of the world’s most read wine websites, visited by a phenomenal 275,000 unique users from 211 countries per month. We are very proud of our extensive PR and marketing campaign that sees us promote our results to over 700 million consumers around the world.

We are thrilled to welcome you into the DWWA 2013, on our 10th anniversary. We look forward to delivering our most exciting collection of results to date.

how the dwwa works world wine awards 2013

Follow our step-by-step guide to the judging process and see how a wine wins a medal or trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards

ENTRIESProducers are invited to submit their wines and provide us with the wine’s technical details, price and retail availability. Four bottles of each wine arrive at the Decanter warehouse and are logged, categorised, and coded according to country and region.

REGIONAL TROPHIESAll the Gold medal-winning wines within each region are divided into categories according to price (under or over £15) and style or grape variety. These wines are then retasted by members of the region’s panel who award an Exceptional Value Regional Trophy to the best wine in each category under £15 and a Regional Trophy to the best wine in each category over £15 – although an Exceptional Value Regional Trophy or Regional Trophy will only be awarded if the panel believes a wine’s quality merits such an award.

MEDALSThe judges taste wines individually, with knowledge of their region, style, and price bracket. They then compare notes and reach a consensus on each wine’s medal. Wines awarded a Gold or Silver medal are retasted by the Regional Chair for his or her confirmation.

INTERNATIONAL TROPHIESAll Regional Trophy winners are then split into categories according to grape variety or style. These wines then compete for the Exceptional Value International Trophies (under £15) and International Trophies (over £15) in a separate tasting judged by our Chairman, Steven Spurrier, our guest Vice-Chair, Gerard Basset MS MW OBE, and three Regional Chairs – the top wines from each region being pitted against each other to win the DWWA’s ultimate accolade.

RESULTS & PROMOTIONSThe results are printed in a special edition of Decanter and on www.decanter.com.
