Guiro – Latin American percussion instrument

Fish Pattern cards

• “Vamos a la Mar” – Echo teach Spanish text three measures at a time. Choose Spanish-speaking student (if available) to translate and add melody. Add one guiro stroke at the end of each phrase. Class sings song while individual students take turns playing the guiro part. Present the visual speaking each fish name rhythmically in English and Spanish. Demonstrate choosing four pictures to create a rhythm pattern. If SMART board is available have several students create a pattern for the class to perform by speaking and clapping. Divide the class into four groups and distribute packets (of fish pictures) to each group. Students create a word chain using four fish to be spoken rhythmically twice. Groups share word chains with class. Perform as a rondo (ABACADAEA) with A being the song with guiro alternating with student created parts.

• “Swimmy” – Read the story. Discuss moral of the story. Echo-teach melody “Swimmy, Swimmy what did you see?” (So Mi So Mi So Mi Re Do) Add guiro to play one stroke on each syllable of the word “Swimmy.” Perform song with guiro after reading each page. Present Swimmy visual. Sing melody using solfege and hand signals. Place fish on spaces and line to illustrate melody.
