Supporting our Sites of outstanding global importance WORLD HERITAGE UK Issue 1 Spring 2016 NEWSLETTER The story so far… World Heritage UK was granted the status of Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on September 1st 2015 and has already made its mark in the sector with a conference, a networking meeting and a technical workshop, with much more to come! Supported by a Board of Trustees and a growing membership of organisations and individuals, the future is looking busy in fulfilling the CIO’s strategic objectives of networking, advocacy and promotion. Teaming up with ALVA Did you know that more people visit heritage attractions at the weekend in the UK than go to football matches? Just one of the many facts and statistics revealed at The Tower of London New Armouries Building, the setting for a joint meeting of World Heritage UK and the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions in March. Sharing information on tourism and heritage trends, the policy landscape, new funding opportunities and threats to world heritage sites globally, between ourselves and presenters ALVA, the Heritage Alliance, Visit England and WWF UK, was a valuable exercise towards achieving our networking objective. You can read about ALVA here. 15th April - World Heritage UK Board and Committee Meeting, London 18th April - World Heritage Day 27th/28th June - Networking Meeting, Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland 10th/11th October - Annual Conference, Caernarfon, Wales All year - (but especially November) 30th Anniversary celebrations for World Heritage Sites at St. Kilda, Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast, Durham Castle and Cathedral, Ironbridge Gorge, Studley Royal Park (including the ruins of Fountain Abbey), Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites and the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd. Dates for the diary World Heritage UK currently survives on the membership fees contributed by its members and has produced a membership leaflet to encourage more people to join. If you have any opportunity to use the leaflet at a relevant site or event, some can be supplied to you. Alternatively, you can go direct to the membership application forms here . Remember, membership is open to a variety of organisations, and there is an individual membership category too. Next Members meeting - at the Giant's Causeway! Preparations are underway for the next Members Meeting, hosted by the National Trust at the Giant’s Causeway World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland on the 27th/28th June. One of only 4 ‘natural’ WHS the UK has responsibility for (two of these are UK Overseas Territories), the Giant’s Causeway will provide a dramatic backdrop to the meeting agenda which will include the management of Visitor Centres. Management Plansdiscussed in Edinburgh

On 25th-26th January 2016,Historic Environment Scotlandhosted a technical meeting inEdinburgh to discuss WorldHeritage Site Management Plansand Systems to find out whatmakes a management plansuccessful. Lots of expertise sharedhere, highlighting the wide varietyof methodologies undertaken,including having the managementplan online, an example fromHadrian’s Wall. UK participantswere joined by world heritagecolleagues from Austria, Bulgaria,Germany and the Netherlands whoprovided useful Europeanperspectives. You can read morehere.

Inaugural conferenceat Saltaire

The first of World Heritage UK’sconferences took place at theSaltaire World Heritage Site, nearBradford in Yorkshire. A fineexample of Victorian industrialheritage, the two day meeting inOctober 2015 was held in theVictoria Hall with an attendance ofover 90 participants, who alsoenjoyed a civic reception hosted bythe Mayor of Bradford as well assampling the celebrated local curry!An important event to be successfulfor the newly formed organisation,the feedback from delegates wasoverwhelmingly positive andprovided a sound basis for WorldHeritage UK to move forward from.It even had support from theMinister for Heritage and TourismYou can view the video and readmore here.

Forth Bridge is UK's 29th!

The most recent member of theUK’s UNESCO World Heritage Sitefamily is the Forth Bridge whichwas inscribed as a World HeritageSite in July 2015 at the UNESCOWorld Heritage Committee meetingin Bonn, Germany. It is the sixthWorld Heritage Site for Scotlandand brings the total for the UnitedKingdom to twenty-nine. You canread more here.

Autumn 2016 conferenceA date for your diary - WorldHeritage UK’s second conferencewill be held in Caernarfon on10th/11th October, completing thegoal of achieving a significant eventin each of the UK’s home nations inthe first year of the organisation’sexistence. The conference willcelebrate the 30th anniversary ofthe UNESCO inscription of the‘Edwardian Castles’ World HeritageSite, one of the six sites inscribed in1986 as the first in the UK.
