  Why I am inviting WilliamSmythe

I took my first SE workshop with Dr. Peter Levine (founder of Somatic

Experiencing®) and Bill Smythe (assistant) 5-months after a life-threatening

operation to remove a benign tumor in my carotic byfurcatio, which resulted in the

loss of a vocal cord. The workshop was held in Lonstrup, Denmark, with 16 students,

in a cosy little hostel overlooking the beach. It was mid-summer and daylight was all

day long. We did very deep work and all of us had real life changing experiences. I

came home with a profound transformation, understanding and feeling liberated from

old stories in my body and mind.

Bill and Peter were a great teaching team.  From the first I was impressed by Bill’s

capacity to be in touch, to relate to each of us, and to hold the group in a safe place,

so that we could all open up to really deep transforming experiences in the individual

sessions. We came home transformed.  To this day we all maintain a deep bonding

connection; whenever we meet, we have fun and laughter.

I have always very much admired Bill and always kept in my mind, that I would love

to do more work with him: this was in 1990!

Throughout 34 years of being a Rolfer, my interest has always been to get deeper in

touch with myself to understand the connection between psychology and body.  This

understanding has led to a huge demand for this type of approach and my agenda is

always fully booked.

I reconnected with Bill, in 2011, while attending the Annual Meeting in Boulder,

Colorado: Celebrating 40 Years of the Evolution of Dr. Rolf's Vision –    DeepRoots and Soaring Branches. He was giving the keynote presentation on Healing

the Trauma Body. I was impressed by his further studies and recent master’s degree

in Somatic Psychology, as he told me about his continued journey of deepening into

a body psychology.  My idea of bringing him to Europe arose again. At that time, I

was in the building phase of my little Hotel or Guest House, so it took time to be

ready to invite him.

Now the time is right!! I wrote to Bill and he accepted to come and teach hisfirst workshop in Switzerland in June 2017!   This is my formal invitation for you to come study with Bill.

This workshop will explore the practitioner’s somatic reality (intra-subjective) while

engaging with the client’s somatic reality (intra-subjective). This intersubjective

relationship is the foundation for exploring a body psychology for Rolfers. You will

learn theoretically and experientially: the origins of form and embodiment; about

attachment theory and its importance in somatic therapy; how your inner state of

mind and body profoundly influences session outcome; methods for staying present

with psycho-emotional issues; and discovering the inherent treatment plan.

I am very excited that he is coming and am hoping that a lot of you will share my

passion and will be curious and interested in attending this workshop.

Intersubjectivity and the Practice of Rolfing®

Rolfing® primarily emphasizes the need to work through the client’s fascial network

in bringing about structural integration and resolving somatic dysfunction. However,

recent research has demonstrated that the relationship of Rolfer and client plays a

major role in our clinical success, even more so than technique. This therapeutic

relationship is mediated through the emotional bond that is formed and the regulation

of feelings between our clients and ourselves.

This workshop draws upon theories of pre- and perinatal psychology, somatic

psychology, and Somatic Experiencing® in exploring this intersubjective dynamic.

Students will learn the right use of clinical intuition, empathy, instinctual intelligence,

and how to work with issues of somatic transference and counter transference in

facilitating mind and body integration in our clinical work.

Bill Smythe, M.A., is a pioneer in the fields of Somatic Psychology and Rolfing®

Structural Integration. He has practiced Rolfing since 1979, served as a Faculty

Member of the Rolf Institute from 1990 to 2001, and received his master’s degree in

Somatic Psychology in 2007. Bill is a 5th degree black belt in aikido and sensei of the

Aikido Arts Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He lives in Santa Fe with his wife, Kelly

and dog, Kiko.

For this workshop, you will receive 3 manipulation and 3 elective continuing

education credits.

This workshop will deeply explore the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship as

outlined in my master’s thesis in Somatic Psychology of the same title. From the

beginning of my Rolfing practice, I have been aware of the psycho-emotional effects

of our work. My basic and advanced Rolfing trainings did not prepare me for dealing

with a client’s psycho-emotional issues in the session. For many years I took “pop-

psychology” workshops, studied Ericksonian hypnotherapy, and pursued

metaphysical theories to better understand why certain phenomena were activated

during clinical sessions. My primary understanding of these clinical experiences,

were mostly guided by my therapeutic and teaching experiences with Dr. Peter

Levine of Somatic Experiencing®.   I further developed my manipulative and

diagnostic skills with personal studies with Dr. John Upledger (cranial sacral), Dr.

Jean Pierre Barral (visceral manipulation), and Franklin Sills (biodynamic cranial

sacral). Although my diagnostic and treatment proficiency greatly improved, my skills

for resolving my clients’ psycho-emotional suffering had not. In 2003, I enrolled in a

doctoral degree program in somatic psychology to better prepare me for

understanding and working with psycho-emotional suffering in the clinical setting. For

many personal reasons, I chose to complete my graduate program with a master’s

degree in somatic psychology in 2007. Since then my clinical practice includes

Rolfing and Somatic Psychology…touching and talking. I have discovered that most

of my clients’ physical symptoms and chronic pain are a result of their psycho-

emotional issues being somatized. This supports the notion that the “issues are in

the tissues.” My training has increased my skills for negotiating and tolerating strong

feelings and emotions, while providing cognitive theory for psychological issues as

they arise.

In many ways, this workshop is based on one of my favorite Dr. Rolf quotes: “The

Rolfer’s ultimate laboratory is his/her own body.” This workshop will explore the

practitioner’s somatic reality (intra-subjective) while engaging with the client’s

somatic reality (intra-subjective). This intersubjective relationship is the foundation for

investigating a body psychology for Rolfers. Students will develop skills for holding

the therapeutic container, tolerating strong emotions, navigating psychological

issues, and avoiding practitioner burnout. Most importantly, students’ manipulative

and therapeutic skills will be greatly enhanced.
