Registration in this course is restricted by the Graduate School to students enrolled ocially

in the Graduate School, senior undergraduate students with grade point averages 3.50,

and certain other students with grade point averages 3.00 who have been granted special

permission to enroll through the Oce of Graduate Student Programs.

Enrollment in WF ED 597D during Spring Semester 2010 is limited to 10 students.

Instructions for completing course registration are provided by the Oce of the University

    Registrar (see http://www.registrar.psu.edu/registration/completing_registration.cfm).

    L'6-8,#+,-"./?*3U335'.,

e Penn State registration process consists of two steps: (a) the student registers for courses

and (b) the student completes registration by paying all tuition and fees. If a student does

not pay tuition and fees, registration is incomplete. Implications of incomplete student

registrations for the Instructor are as follows:

e Instructor is not obligated to provide instruction or assessment to students with incompleteregistration.

e names of students with an incomplete registration do not appear on the nal grade roster.

e Instructor cannot submit a nal grade for students with an incomplete registration.

Penn State Access Accounts of students with incomplete registrations are canceled during the tenthweek of the semester.

Financial matters related to semester bills are between students and the University Registrar

entirely, but, as indicated above, diculty with these matters is likely to impede students

academic progress. Refer to the Semester Bill application on eLion (http://elion.psu.edu/) for

more information about student tuition obligations.

is course is delivered through resident instruction. Some students who work for public

school systems arrange for tuition payments from their intermediate units and obtain a

continuing education registration for the course. Instruction is not provided to students

enrolled in this course for continuing education credit until the Department of Learning

and Performance Systems and Penn State Continuing Education reach an agreement for the

nancial and other arrangements for continuing education registration in this course that is

satisfactory for all parties. No general agreement exists between the Department of Learning

and Performance Systems and Penn State Continuing Education for such registration.is

agreement is reached on an ad hoc basis during any semester in which continuing education

registration for this course is attempted.

Delivery of this course requires a large amount of eort and many resources from the

Instructor, people working and volunteering as teaching assistants, the WF ED academic

program, and the University. ose scarce resources will not be used to deliver instructionto students who are not registered ocially for the course and who might never fulll

their registration. Students not enrolled and registered completely and without reservation

according to the University Registrar by the close of business on 22 January 2010 are, in

eect, not in the course. If a students registration remains incomplete on 22 January 2010,

implication #1 is implementedthat is, the student does not receive additional instruction or

assessment until the semester bill is satised with the Registrar. Moreover, the Instructor will

not authorize a late add of this course.

ere are two standard, major expectations for course performance: (a) completion of

A major assignment for the course is to implement and evaluate a single Web 2.0 application

or cluster of Web 2.0 applications to a practical work situation.e aim of the implementation

is to improve collaboration and communication for a workgroup of your choosing. Wide

exibility is oered to each course participant for the design and evaluation methodology

employed. Moreover, course participants may elect to work in up to twoperson groups to

perform an implementation and evaluation. Reports should describe the need, design and

    evaluation of the implementation.

Participants in this course vary in their experience with and interest in Web 2.0 applications.

A course participant may propose to the Instructor a substitution of experience with another

Web 2.0 application for the application actually specied for any assignment. Perhaps a

participant already has used a certain Web 2.0 application. Or, perhaps a participants interests

veer in another direction or toward a similar application to the application specied on the

ANGEL course web site. No matter what path is chosen by a course participant, the total

number of experiences with Web 2.0 applications must total een if the participant takes the

    alternative to propose substitute assignments.

Some course participants might have substantial experience with the use of networkedproducts and services to promote communication and collaboration in the workplace. As

a consequence, completion of the standard or substitute assignments and implementation

report might not meet the learning requirements of some participants. In such cases, course

participants should propose an alternative learning plan to the instructor. e plan should

include brief statements of aims, processes, outcomes, and assessment. e outcomes

proposed should be tangible in the sense that these outcomes are realized as scholarly

theoretical or integrative papers, mash up applications (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Mashup_(web_application_hybrid)) that promote communication and collaboration, or

research studies that test some proposition demonstrated to be kernel to use of web 2.0

application for communication or collaboration in the workplace. Submit proposals foralternative learning plans to the Instructor by no later than 29 January 2010.

Requests for deferred grades are common. e Instructors policy is that deferral of a grade

is possible only under limited conditions. Deferred grades are awarded to students based on

their performance problems in this course only if: (a) course products are incomplete on the

last day of instruction in the course for documented reasons (e.g., physicians note would

provide documentation) beyond the students control; or (b) tangible evidence is oered that

a relatively small amount of course work remains to be completed by the end of the semester.

Make written requests to the Instructor for deferred grades by no later than the last day of

instruction in the course. Support requests with appropriate documentation. Along with

requests include plans and time lines for removing deferred grades. See Penn State policy on

    deferred grades at http://www.registrar.psu.edu/grades/deferred.cfm.

    G.8,#*&,"#X7"*#8'/(2+3*+,-".

As is the practice at Penn State, administrators might request formal or informal Instructor/

course evaluations at any time while the course is in progress or aer it is completed. If

previous department/program experience is any guide, these evaluations might occur with

or without the knowledge or consent of the Instructor and could include students and others

not involved in the course. In addition to these evaluation methods employed by Penn State

administrators, the Instructor structures formative and summative evaluations of the course

    and Instructor.

    ?"#5+,-2'

is course is revised continually and systematically to strive for a clearer, more complete, andmore eective instructional system for students. Oen, data for formative evaluation of the

course are collected using online surveys administered through ANGEL (http://cms.psu.edu)

or through a thirdparty provider. Students are responsible for providing their own original

feedback about the course and instruction as necessary. Students are responsible for bringing

their comments and suggestions about the course directly to the Instructors attention.

Constructive comments and suggestions always are welcome.

University Park, PA 168021304 (email: [email protected]). A reminder of this evaluation

opportunity is provided during the nal class meeting prior to the nal examination. In

What level of eort must a student maintain to complete this course successfully? According

to Penn State academic policy (http://www.senate.psu.edu/policies/42-00.html; see, especially, policy 42-23, Types of Instruction),

e distribution of time between class activities and outside preparation varies from course to course;however, for the average student, a total of at least forty (40) hours of work planned and arranged by theUniversity faculty is required to gain 1 credit.

As a consequence, participants in this course should expect to expend at least 120 hours of

eort to complete class meetings and assignments. Attainment of course aims might require

more than minimum eort, however. Mileage varies.
