Open ClassThe division that is responsible for crowning the series champion, the Open class is the premier division on the West Coast Flat Track Series championship trail, offering top notch competition in the form of all-out, wide-open, anything-goes racing. Class rules are liberal, to say the least. Competitors are allowed to compete aboard any motorcycle that is properly prepared in accordance with a few basic guidelines. Motorcycles must feature a minimum engine displacement of 350cc. beyond that, the sky’s the limit. You can expect to see two-strokes and four-strokes of all displacement sizes and engine configurations be they 600cc singles, 750cc V-twins or some radical, methanol-burning multi-cylinder beast. It is truly a “run what ya brung” format.

Saddlemen Vintage ClassWhere would we be without our roots? The Open Vintage division pays homage to the machinery of yesteryear, allowing fans of the great days of Triumph vs. BSA vs. Yamaha vs. Harley, etc., to once again witness the glorious sights and sounds of an era gone by. Class requirements call for motorcycles of 1974 and earlier vintage, with engine displacements limited to 441cc minimum and 750cc maximum. Yamaha TT500 two-valve singles are also eligible for competition. Just like the Open class, all Open Vintage motorcycles must have a rear brake. The West Coast Flat Track Series Open Vintage class revisits the good ol’ days, when the men were men, and a champion was defined not only by how he rode, but what he rode.

Top Gun 450 ClassThe newest class to debut on the West Coast Flat Track Series program, the Honda Top Gun 450 Class is designed to offer current motocross, off-road racers and potential dirt trackers a unique opportunity to learn and develop their basic skills - and then hopefully move up the ladder - at the premier West Coast Flat Track Series venues. Riders can race flat track aboard 250cc/450cc motocross and off-road motorcycle-based equipment that they may already own. Basically, this class is “Flat Track 101,” affording riders the chance to “get their feet wet” in organized flat track racing without having to incur the cost of buying a flat track-specific motorcycle in order to be competitive with other special flat track-only equipment. The Honda Top Gun 450 Class is policed by a strict set of rules designed to create parity among the vast potential market of production-based MX and off-road brands, which can be made competitive practically off the showroom floor!

TECHNICAL BULLETIN

Date: June 9, 2005To: All Saddlemen Vintage Class competitorsRe: Potential eligibility of Honda four-valve single

Due to a fair number of inquiries, and with an eye toward the future of the Saddlemen Open Vintage class, I am considering the possibility of adding the 1973-1982 Honda four-valve single-cylinder engine to the list of approved engines for the Saddlemen Open Vintage class. My thought is that with the Classic Twins class already providing a viable option for those not wishing to ride their twin-cylinder machines against what has evolved into seriously modified Yamaha TT singles in the Saddlemen Open Vintage class, and due to the fact that the Yamaha TT single is not restricted in displacement, allowing 1973-1982 Honda (non-Radial Four Valve Combustion-head) singles with an ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM displacement of 500cc to be eligible for competition in the class could have some merit. Current chassis regulations for the Saddlemen Open Vintage class would remain unchanged. While I feel that this engine formula change could open up the class to a greater number of entries, create more brand diversity and better racing action, I am also very sensitive to the concerns of current class competitors and do not wish to upset the balance of the Saddlemen Open Vintage class as it exists. For this reason, I would greatly appreciate any oral or written comments through the Silver Dollar Speedway round at Chico July 16, 2005. After that date, if prevailing sentiment is positive, then a new technical rule will be drafted to reflect the change and would be posted well in advance of the Cottage Grove Speedway round. Such a rule would go into effect starting with the Cottage Grove Speedway round. If not, the class will continue to run as is. I am very interested to hear your comments regarding this matter.

Sincerely,

August 1, 2008 Rules Update, Top Gun 450 Class

In the interest of expanding to include more brands/models to compete in the Top Gun 450 Class the following updates of Rule 1 and 2 are in effect for the 2005 season.

1. Any OE production-framed motocross or off-road motorcycle originally displacing not less than 200cc is eligible for competition, regardless of year. In keeping with the low-buck premise of the class, frame modifications (such as rake alterations, swingarm shortening, etc.) are not permitted. 2. The engine must carry an OE displacement of at least 200cc (+/- stock overbore allowances). Boring and stroking the engine to increase displacement to the maximum 450cc limit is allowed.

3. Motorcycle must retain the appearance of an OE motocross or off-road machine through the use of OE or equivalent aftermarket plastic and seat. Front fender may be removed.

4. Motorcycle must retain OE or equivalent aftermarket 19-inch rear rim. OE or equivalent aftermarket 21-inch front rim is allowed. 19-inch front wheel, maximum WM3 rim width is allowed (not mandated). Rear wheel hubs must be OE or equivalent aftermarket items. Spools or hubs modified for quick-change gearing are not permitted on the rear.

5. Motorcycle must retain OE or equivalent-sized aftermarket rear brake system.

6. Front brake may be removed - and must be disconnected - for oval track races. OE or aftermarket front brakes may be used in TT events.

8. Standard motocross modifications, such as aftermarket high-pipes, reeds, carbs or carb mods, shocks and/or suspension work, etc. are allowed. Mufflers Are Required.

9. Front and rear suspension may be shortened through the use of topout spacers, linkage and/or springs to make the machine more compatible for dirt track use.

10. Cooling system requirements for liquid-cooled motorcycles are as follows; WATER ONLY or “Red Line Water Wetter” or equivalent must be used NO ANTI-FREEZE.

11. If it doesn't say you can, you can't!
