Cyclists lead the field at the start of Saturday’s Woodstock 5K. Official numbers put 1,240 runners taking part in the 30th annual event.

When it comes to distance running, George Towett and Daniel Kipkoech are practically inseparable.

They travel together, stay together, train together. They even ran out front together Saturday in the Woodstock 5K.

But it’s a good thing for Towett he didn’t follow his friend at the end of the race.

The 25-year-old Kenyan won the Woodstock in his first try in record-set-ting fashion, but if not for a mistake by Kipkoech in the home stretch it might have been a different outcome.

Towett completed the course in 14 minutes, 19 seconds, smashing Scott Strand’s eight-year-old standard by five seconds. He earned $500 for winning the race and a $500 bonus for breaking the record.

Kipkoech finished second at 14:25 and collected $300. Together, they were more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field. Madison’s Josh Whitehead was third at 15:28.

“It’s very exciting, I like it,” Towett said. “I train a lot and this is like a play day (practice run) to me.

“I knew we were running a course-record race and I was excited about that. Crossing the line, I realized I did it. To set a course record is something exciting. It stays in your mind a long time.”

Towett, who entered the race as part of his training for the Montreal Mara-thon, estimated he currently holds seven course records of varying lengths. Among

his other victories are the Mercedes-Benz Cotton Row 10K in Huntsville in May and the 2008 Vulcan Run in Birmingham.

Towett and Kipkoech, who do their stateside training in Kennesaw, Ga., were in the breakout pack at the start and it wasn’t long into the race Towett realized “the pace was not going to come down.”

“We run a lot of races together; I knew this was a good guy to run with,” he said. “It was like I was not sure if I was sup-posed to win because I knew how good he is.”

Once the two Kenyans left the pack, they took turns trading the lead. But with the finish line in sight, Kipkoech, a 24-year-old 10K specialist from the Rift Val-ley, made a decisive flaw.

He followed the pack of bicycles out ahead of the runners, thinking there was still more course to run than there was.

Towett stayed on his line and nosed his training partner at the finish.

“I know I made a very silly mistake there,” Kipkoech said. “... I did not focus at the finish.”

Perhaps another error was being so helpful.

“He’s my friend and I said, ‘Let me go with him,’” he said. “If I went by myself, this course, I know I can go (faster). I was the one pushing from start to finish, but I was, like, waiting.”

Towett said he felt bad for his train-ing partner, but such are the fortunes of athletics.

“It’s sad,” he said, “but it’s competi-tion.”

George Towett, left, leads the field, including training partner Daniel Kipkoech (1218) during Saturday’s event. Towett won in a record time of 14:19.

“It was like I was not sure if I was supposed to win because I knew how good he is.”

Seeing record fall makes Strand ‘miss that time in my life’Scott Strand had seen George Towett

finish Saturday’s Woodstock 5K in a record 14 minutes and 19 seconds, and he had

seen enough.No sooner did Towett

cross the finish line when off Strand walked, back to the tent where the now former record-holder spent the morning hawk-ing Trak Shak goods.

It’s not Strand’s normal place during the Wood-stock. The three-time winner finished seventh

just a year ago.But at 42 and with two active boys,

Strand figures it’s a good place — for now — and he’s in a good place with seeing his 8-year-old record fall.

“I miss that time in my life more than I miss a course record,” he said.

But what a record it was, and that it finally fell shows Woodstock’s growth.

Until Saturday, no one had come close to Strand’s 2002 finish of 14:24. Until Sat-urday, he held the first- and second-best times in race history, the latter a 14:40 fin-ish.

Strand was brought in to set the course in 2002. He did it in a race with about 80 total runners. There was no prize money, and he had no equal running partner to push him.

“I was by myself the whole time,” he said. “I went out hard the first mile and kept pushing and pushing. It was a good time under the circumstances.”

Woodstock began to surge in 2007, receiving designation as the Road Runners Club of America’s 5K championship for Alabama.

Stronger field, but no new record.

The RRCA made Woodstock its South-ern Region 5K championship in 2008.

even stronger field, but no new record. Then came the national-championship

designation in 2009, coupled with mild conditions. Winner Ryan Woods — then 30 years old, four years younger than Strand in 2002 — missed it by 24 seconds.

Woodstock was once again the South-ern Region 5K championship this year. The field of about 1,300 runners braved brutal heat and humidity.

But Woodstock organizers brought a dif-ferent kind of heat this year. Anniston Run-ners Club vice president Robert Jackson suggested adding a $500 bonus for setting a new course record.

The bonus equaled the first-place purse, which The Anniston Star sponsors.

The result was two course records — Towett’s on the men’s side and Janet Cherobon’s 16:46 on the women’s side.

each record holder had close competi-tion. Men’s runner-up Daniel Kipkoech fin-ished one second off Strand’s record, and women’s runner-up Stephanie Pezzullo, the 2009 winner, also beat the previous record time.

“If these guys are just out running and they separate themselves and there’s no incentive to go after a course record, they may just sit back and just play a kicker’s race,” Strand said. “Having that incentive, I’m sure they ran 10, 15 or 20 seconds faster (Saturday) because of that.”

Strand has different incentives these days. He’s partnered with two other people over the Birmingham area’s three Trak

Shak locations. The business sells equipment for run-

ners.“Business is good,” Strand said. “The

running specialty is a strong industry. You can see how popular running is just as an activity. You don’t have to be an elite run-ner to get some satisfaction out of it.”

The Canadian-born Auburn grad also stays busy shuttling and coaching sons ethan, 7, and Henry, 4. They play soccer, baseball and basketball.

Strand says his weekly training regi-men is “a fraction” of what it was around the time he set the Woodstock record. That’s around the time he won the USA 10K championship and qualified for the Olym-pic Trials.

“The biggest thing in why I’m not racing today is that the motivation to train daily is not there right now,” he said. “That could change, when the kids get older. I may do more of that again, and I still run. I still enjoy being in shape like that.”

Then he looked back toward the course where records were just broken and said, “I just wish I could run as fast as those guys.”

He said he will likely run in the Wood-stock again and, perhaps, chase a Masters Division victory. At the very least, Wood-stock makes a great place to set up a Trak Shak tent.

“This race, just seeing it grow is great,” Strand said. “I like good running events anywhere.”

Never going to give it up

BY NICK [email protected]

Even before the gun sounded it was easy to tell who the elite runners at Saturday’s Woodstock 5K.

They were the folks who warmed up for the 3.1-mile competition by running the course before the official contest began. And if you weren’t sure, afterward, they cooled down by run-ning it again.

But the event didn’t just draw professional runners such as native Kenyans George Towett and Janet Cherobon, who both set new course records. It also attracted several men and women with storied pasts in other sports who are always up for an athletic challenge.

All it took was a nudge from a few church mem-bers to entice Chris Weaver to participate in his first 5K run. Weaver, 31, played college basketball at Samford from 1999-2002, where he earned All-Con-ference honors behind his sharp-shooting ability and played in the NCAA tour-nament twice.

“I never run. I ran prob-ably three times getting ready for the race,” said Weaver, now a district manager for a pharmaceu-tical sales company. The 6-foot-2, 202-pounder who is usually running up and down a basketball court a few times a week turned in a time of 20:42 to finish third among men in his age group.

“I started out only about 15 yards behind the pack for the first mile and a half. I think I could run with them in a shorter race, but not a longer one,” he said “I was with them for a half-mile. Then they smoked me. Those guys are so fast.”

Stephanie Pezzullo was the second-fastest woman at the event, turning in a blistering 16:52. Pezzulo, who plays professional for the Division 3 Charlotte Eagles, picked up running looking for something to do in the offseason in col-lege at Penn State.

“When soccer ended,” she said. “I got bored, decided to try out for track

at the last minute. I stuck with track after that.”

While Pezzullo is now an avid runner, Saturday marked a year to the day that Nathan Sullivan began running competitively.

Sullivan graduated from now defunct Emma San-som High School in 1998 before going on to play baseball at Snead State Community College.

Last year, he had whipped himself into fairly decent shape again for a hiking trip. He didn’t want to get “out of shape,” and a couple of his buddies were already avid runners. He began joining them for runs.

Since then, he said, he’s become addicted.

“I don’t know what is,” he said. “You get a run in during the week and you feel a little freer.”

Michael Maniscalco played baseball and foot-ball at Oxford high School. He jogged most of the race before the spring the last 100 yards, which “about killed him,” he said.

“This was my first race of any kind,” Maniscalco said. “The atmosphere was great. I think that was great what the Anniston football team did cheering us on. As a former football and baseball player, that really helped me out.”

It was former Jackson-ville State softball standout Rachel Smith’s third or fourth time running in the Woodstock 5K.

She finished the race well under 30 minutes at 29:25. Smith, the wife of Piedmont High football coach Steve Smith, used the Woodstock as a tune-up for an upcoming 10K event.

“It takes a lot of self-motivation and self-dis-cipline in an individual sport as opposed to a team sport,” she said. “In a team sport, it’s a lot easier because you have the support and motiva-tion of your teammates and coaches. It takes a lot of intrinsic motivation to get out here and run in the heat by yourself.”

The previous time Janet Chero-bon ran the Woodstock 5K, she was admittedly not in good shape — relatively speaking, of course.

This time, two years later, she arrived in Anniston on Saturday better prepared to deal with the course’s smattering of inclines and rolling hills.

If the native Kenyan was more versed in the terminology of American football, she might have said she outpunted her coverage with her preparation.

After recent altitude training in her home country — which boasts of peaks such as Mount Kiliman-jaro — Cherobon obliterated the course record with a time of 16:46 to win the 2010 Southern Regional Championship. Cherobon broke the old mark of 17:12 by Jill Stef-fens in 2008 by 26 seconds. It was two seconds shy of a full minute faster than her time in 2008.

All in all, it was exactly the way she had planned it.

“I’ve just been training to try and get the course record, and that’s what I did,” said Cherobon, who pocketed an extra $500 for breaking the mark. “I just wanted to set a decent pace and just try and hang on.”

Cherobon, 31, set that torrid tempo from the start, leaving the other women to watch her pony-tail of tight-knit braids bounce to her asphalt-pounding rhythm.

Last year’s winner, Stepha-nie Pezzullo, said she knew that wasn’t her race soon after the cav-alcade of runners crossed the start line and Cherobon bore down.

“She went out fast looking to be in the, probably, 16:30 or :40 (fin-ish time),” Pezzullo said. “I knew I wasn’t there yet this year, so I just went out with a 5:18 first mile, and the whole time I just tried to stay as close as possible.”

The terrain of the course played right into Cherobon’s hands — “I do love my hills,” she said — and helped the separation to become large through the course’s steepest inclines.

Pezzullo found her kick at the end past the 2 1/2-mile mark. She closed the gap but was never able to overtake Cherobon and finished second with a time of 16:52.

Pezzullo’s winning time set a personal best on a road course and was 33 seconds quicker than the mark she set last year, when

she was coming off reconstructive ankle surgery.

“I was just trying to break the record,” Pezzullo said. “I would have been happy with 17:11.”

While course records were set on the men’s side, too, the oddity in this race was it was almost the two women by themselves.

Cherobon was sixth overall — men included — and Pezzullo was seventh. The separation of the men from the women was large, totaling 45 seconds.

It didn’t bother Cherobon. “I train mostly by myself ...” she

said. “I run the pace I want to fin-ish at.”

For Pezzullo, however, the gaps were strange and uncommon.

“Well, it’s funny, usually I’ll pick out a guy, but there was not many guys in front of us this year,” she said. “There weren’t many guys in front of us at all.

“There was nobody to really

run with but her — thank good-ness I saw her.”

As the top five men separated from the pair, Cherobon and Mezzulo did the same from the other women. Third place went to Macon, Ga., 15-year-old Grace Tinkey, who finished nearly a full minute off the lead with a time of 17:41.

Last year’s runner-up, Lauren Blankenship, was fourth at 17:58, and Holly Ortlund rounded out the top five at 18:11.

Whether it was the relatively mild morning temperatures or the stronger field, times were quicker for many of the elites.

“It was nice to have her there — even thought I don’t win the money,” Pezzullo said. “But that’s OK.”

A survey said that teams competing in the Woodstock 5K wanted to compete against teams of their ability level, and Woodstock organizers listened.

Saturday’s Woodstock 5K saw a new wrinkle for the team competition, with teams broken down into categories. The categories included business/organization, mixed (male/female), open male, open female and school team.

The breakdown meant that more teams walked off winners. It also meant more teams — 24 total, up from 16 a year ago.

This year’s total included 10 business/organization teams.

“Sometimes, business would have a hard time competing against a cross coun-try high school team that’s really, really fast,” Woodstock race director Brooke Nel-son said. “This gave more people a chance to maybe win awards.

“People have really gotten into it. They get shirts alike. They get very excited about competing together and training together.”

Team results are scored based on an average time for each team’s top five run-ners.

Saturday’s winners were as follows: Depot Dashers (22:51) in biz/org; Team Mahaffey (20:46) in mixed; Oxford Buzz (19:36) in open male; S&Gs (24:03) in open female; and White Plains Wildcats (21:07) in school team.

• PRO TIMING: Runners in Saturday’s Woodstock 5K and Kidstock race tried out the latest thing in race timing, called DTag.

The tag comes attached to race bibs. Runners peel them off, loop them around a shoelace, peel the adhesive tab and attach the ends together.

Once in position, the tags form the letter D, hence the name.

The new timing tags are more conve-nient and accurate.

“We used to have chips that were not disposable, so you had to stop as soon as you finish running,” Nelson said. “You’d have to cut them off, and it was real annoy-ing.

“These are supposed to be much more accurate and pick up the sensors better, and you don’t have to stop. You don’t have to give it back.”

• BRICK FIFTH: Matthew Brick, the top finisher with local ties, finished fifth overall.

The Birmingham native, who runs for Jacksonville State University, covered the course in 15:59.

Not bad, considering.Brick had battled foot blisters and side

stitches, and he twisted the same ankle twice.

“I’ve been injured for the past week, and today the heat kind of caught up to me,” he said. “I’m just basically taking it easy until we start for JSU in a couple of weeks.”

Brick also led the way for the JSU Wood-stock Gamecocks team, which finished second in the school team category with an average time of 21:50.

• MEGAN’S RUN: University of Alabama runner Megan Williams was the top local female finisher Saturday.

The 21-year-old Oxford product fin-ished in 19:29 to finish 30th overall and eighth among females.

“It wasn’t quite as fast as I did last year,” she said. “My training was a lot harder last year, and I kind burned out at the end of the season. I’m hoping this year I’ll keep get-ting better and better and peak at SECs or regionals.”

Williams just saw a disappointing finish to her junior year at Alabama. She suffered a groin injury at the SEC Championships and wasn’t able to finish.

“I was hoping to break 18 (minutes) that race, but I didn’t get to,” she said. “Defi-nitely this year, I’m going to do it.”

Williams also led the way for the S&Gs team that won the open female team com-petition.

• GOING THE EXTRA MILE: Five kilo-meters wasn’t enough for Chris Hagan.

When he finished his loop around course in just less than 29 minutes, he headed back out to find his son, Ross, and they ran the final quarter-mile together.

“I just wanted to run with him for a few minutes, help him in,” Hagan said. “It was his first (Woodstock) and he’s a whole lot more important than sitting down.”

Ross, an 11-year-old Donoho sixth-grader, only decided to enter the day of the race. He ran the course in 42:11 and although he called the experience “tiring,” he found his pace getting quicker when he saw dad coming back to meet him.

“He didn’t say anything (beforehand), but I knew I’d see him before the finish line,” Ross said. “Up to that point I felt tired, but (after seeing him), I knew I was almost done, so I just ran.”

The elder Hagan has a lot of experience in big events in Calhoun County. For the past several years, he has been responsible for putting the pairings together for the Sunny King Charity Classic.

The day gave him a chance to compare the two events.

“This is a bigger event from a personnel (participant) stand-point, but it still takes a lot more to put on the Sunny King, just because of the facilities, the days,” he said. “But (race director) Brooke (Nelson) does an excel-lent job with this. To go from, what, 70 to 1,200 (runners) and have national standing, it’s an amazing event.”

• HE MADE IT: Lamar Carter couldn’t have been happier about the way his first Woodstock experience turned out.

The 44-year-old Munford man nearly made his goal of hitting the finish line in 30 minutes — he ran 30:41 — but he did finish.

“I’ve never run any 5K,” he said. “All I run is two miles on a treadmill and around the house and I never finish the third mile. My goal was just to finish the race, but once I got started, I said I can do it in 30 min-utes.”

He was on that pace. Then he hit The

Heartbreak Hill.“It kind of got me,” he said. “I got about

15 yards from the top and it started kicking in, the burn. I slowed down to nearly a walk and once I got to the top, I kind of sprinted the rest of the way to try to make up for time. I did 31:12 (unofficially). I’m tickled to death.”

• BUSY DAY: The starter’s pistol didn’t just signal the beginning of the Woodstock 5K for Jaylon Ellison. It started a long day.

Ellison had been training for weeks for the road race and fulfilled that obligation. But hours after he crossed the finish line, he was headed off for another kind of mar-athon — the amateurs’ first round Cane Creek Pro-Invitational golf tournament.

He knew it was going to make for a long day, but he was com-mitted to both.

“I kind of had it in my schedule the last three weeks,” he said. “I knew what the conse-quences were.”

Actually, the double duty wasn’t a stretch. He went on a 5K train-ing run last Sunday prior to his final-round tee time in the Pine Hill Invitational, and won the tournament to extend his points lead on the Calhoun County Golf Tour.

Knowing what awaited him later, Elli-son said he ran a “very conservative” Wood-stock race. He finished in 24:32, just inside the top 150.

“My first mile was 7:19,” he said. “My body was telling me to keep going, but my mind was saying stay conservative because I had a more important competition later.”

He was speaking some two hours before his tee time, but said he would do both events “if the time is right.”

Then he thought about that a little and said, “I’ll let you know after I play.”

• RAIDERS ON THE RUN: Rex McAl-lister did some serious recruiting for this year’s race. Last year, he brought one run-ner to the event. On Saturday, he had 15 runners in the race representing his Pleas-ant Valley cross-country program, includ-

ing his assistant coach and a former runner some 10 years removed.

With school starting Monday and offi-cial practice starting Tuesday, McAllister considered this race as a final fun training session. Oxford and White Plains also had their teams there.

“It’s like an intrasquad game or a jam-boree,” he said. “I had five or six little ones who’d never run a race and you get to one with 1,300 people in it, I think I’ve got them hooked for life.”

• REAPING REWARDS: Riley Austin took home the biggest prize among all the runners from the Austin-McGinnis clan in the race.

The 10-year-old Spring Garden fifth-grader, the son Ricky and Dana Austin, was the overall winner in the One-Mile Kid-stock race.

He hit the tape in 5:32, more than 30 seconds better than his sixth-place time a year ago. He won the race by one second, leaving his challengers on the hill near the finish.

“It feels great, as much work as it took,” Riley said, noting he had trained hard for the last month. “I can’t explain how great it feels.”

• WE ARE FAMILY: There’s teamwork, and then there’s teamwork. That’s the way the Church family approached at Satur-day’s Woodstock 5K.

The whole lot of them — five counting their 8-year-old Labrador retriever Daisy — worked together to beat their family goal of finishing the 3.1-mile course in less than 30 minutes. They actually did it 48 seconds under that time.

With 3-year-old Lara Lee and baby brother Hartwell in a jogging stroller and Daisy running alongside, mother and father Kaytee and Ryan took turns pushing their children around the course.

It was an ambitious decision consider-ing it was Ryan’s first 5K run, but he said the only real difficult part of it was maneuver-ing through the throngs of more than 1,300 runners.

“As long as I had the dog, I’m good,” Kay-tee said.

The two alternated the duties of power-ing the stroller: Kaytee had the flats and her husband the hills. When asked if the inclines bought him any brownie points, Ryan replied, “I sure hope so.”

While there was an area set aside on the homestretch for childcare, the couple wasn’t the only ones who decided to take their children along for the run.

Jeff Lewis’ family of six took part, too, however only the two youngest needed pushing. Despite running 6 miles in his training sessions, “I’m surprisingly tired at this distance,” Lewis said.

“It’s definitely different weaving in and out of people,” Lewis said. “It adds even more.”

Oddly enough, both fathers — Church and Lewis — finished in exactly 29:13.

• LONG WAY FROM HOME: With all the designations that it has held in recent years — state championship, regional champi-onship and national championship — the Woodstock 5K gets its share of talent com-ing in from other states.

But across the pond? That’s a trek Erin Sims-Guillerand has made once again.

Sims-Guillerand left her home in Mor-teau, France, and boarded a plane with her husband Sam to Atlanta and drove over to run in the 30th annual event. In case you’re wondering, the distance between the two points is 4,590 miles.

While she didn’t break out her passport just to run the Woodstock — her family lives in Mississippi, and then they’re off to sightsee — she did at least stop by, and fin-ished sixth in the women’s overall.

When asked about the growth of the event and what makes so many people turn out, she used two words: Brooke Nelson.
