October 7: Long Time Courting

This Boston-based band is comprised of four of the finest young artists in the Celtic tradition: Shannon Heaton, flute; Sarah Blair, fiddle; Liz Simpson, guitar; Valerie Thomp-son, cello; and all four on vocals. Traditional Irish, Scottish and American tunes blend with contemporary songs featuring rich, soaring vocal arrangements, for performances re-viewers praise as “seamlessly innovative, in-ventively arranged and skillfully rendered.” In concert and on their new CD, instrumentals feature precision and creativity, with cello lines shifting from sinuous countermelody to driving percussive rhythms under a power-ful combination of fiddle and flute, anchored by the guitar’s solid groove. October 21, 2012: AcquAria

AcquAria is a Sicilian duo, drawing inspiration from that celebrated island’s culture, people, history and music. Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana are exceptionally talented young singers, capable of instantly enchanting their audiences. Ms. Musolino has an exquisite and powerful voice and is also a talented percussionist in the Sicilian tradition. Mr. Castellana’s talents include the ability to play unique instruments such as friscalettu (Sicilian pennywhistle) and marranzanu (jaw harp), and to create sounds of the surf by swirling rice grains in a tambourine or blowing on a seashell. This duo will trans-port you as they sing of ill-fated lovers immortalized as swordfish, or tragedies such as the deadly earthquake a century ago. Tarantellas and songs of celebration will have you up and dancing in the aisles. As Michaela says, “Sicilian music reflects the cycle of life, not in real time, but in humanity’s time.”

November 4: The Reunion Band

Known for their tight vocal harmonies and solid traditional bluegrass sound, the Reunion Band features Boston-area veterans Richard Brown (mandolin), Dave Dillon (rhythm guitar), Margaret Gerteis (acoustic bass), and Richard Un-derwood (banjo), plus new member Laura Orshaw (fiddle). Formed in 2002, the group’s core members have played to-gether in various configurations for over thirty years. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Dave Dillon played with Don Stover as well as the renowned Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys. Richard Brown, Monroe-style mandolinist and lead/baritone, joined Dave in the Hudson Valley Boys and the Stony Lonesome band. Rhythm bassist and high tenor Margaret Gerteis also played with Dave and Richard

in the Stony Lonesome band, as well as with Apple Country, Hazel Dickens and others, and hard-driving banjo picker Richard Underwood played with Maggie in the Hazel Dickens band. Meanwhile, young fiddler & singer Laura Orshaw has been praised by far and wide for her “boundless energy ... and contagious joy.” Together, the Reunion Band will blend their communal experience into a night of hot picking and sweet singing.

November 18: Roy Book Binder

Country blues troubadour Roy Book Binder is a singing, guitar picking, song writing, and storytelling phenom-enon. For over three decades he has traveled through America in his tour bus home, performing and teaching. In the early 1960s Roy learned his craft from Piedmont blues masters such as Reverend Gary Davis and Pink Anderson (the “Pink” in Pink Floyd). Before he died, Anderson gave Roy his songs with a request to keep his name alive; Roy has been obliging ever since. “The Book” has toured with such greats as Bonnie Raitt, BB King, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Jorma Kaukonen, Doc Watson, Ray Charles and Hot Tuna. He has performed at festivals from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Chicago Blues Festival to The National Storytelling Festival and Merlefest, where he hosted the acoustic blues stage for over a decade. Reviewers have praised his classic blues sensibility, rugged vocal style, fine fingerpicking and bottleneck guitar techniques, and above all his mastery as an entertainer, weaving stories, humor and music into an evening to remember.
