As a wedding planner I am often asked what advice I give to newly engaged couples. I always offer the following advice first; create a budget that can support your guest list.

Secondly, regardless of your budget hire a professional over a friend or family. It will save you time and money, and in most cases a relationship in the long run.

Most importantly make your day about the two of you. Never forget that a wedding is your way of sharing your love story with the people you love.

Think of your wedding planning like the simple structure of building a house. The foundation will be the date you pick and the budget you set. The support beams to be added will be the ceremony and reception venue, caterer, florist, photographer, honeymoon destination and minister!

The walls and roof will be constructed of everything from the dress, wedding party, rehearsal dinner, the DJ/Band and more! Even if you hire a wedding planner, map out your "blueprint" ahead of time and watch the construction unfold as you approach the altar. Your "I do" is the finishing touch on the house that love built.

Marriage between husband and wife begins with a deep love for God as well as a lifelong commitment to grow with each other. It's both exciting and a lot of work. Your wedding day is a celebration of this new journey, so have fun together. Explore ideas that celebrate who you are as a couple which will give your wedding day that charming personal touch.

Although exciting, this can be a very overwhelming time when it comes to where to start the wedding planning process. It doesn't have to be. The key is to be organized and acknowledging your own desires in what you want for your wedding. Get a binder with dividers and begin with the the most important aspect - numbers! Determine your budget and guest list. Every guest increases your cost--from venue size to decor. Remember, the wedding is for you and your fiance. Focus on what is important to you and don't sweat the small stuff. Once you have the numbers, find your venue. A good venue will have staff to guide you in the rest of the process and will ensure you create the day of your dreams.

(And How To Avoid Them)

Booking Blunder 1Choosing a vendor but not booking the vendor.

Don't assume that a vendor knows you are using them. Take the next step. There should be a contract to sign and deposit to pay. Make sure you complete the process.

Booking Blunder 2Confirm the date with the vendor, especially if it has changed several times.

If anything for piece of mind, double-check with all of your vendors at one month out and at one week out to make sure they have you on the calendar for the right place, day and time.

Booking Blunder 3Blowing your budget with "hidden fees."

Be sure to ask what is included in the total price and if there are suggested or required gratuity, delivery charges, etc. This will keep your budget in check!
