According to Aoife Hanly, nothing beats precious metal for a really luxurious feel, whether it’s gold décor in your venue, gold leaf on the food or even Christian Dior’s D’Or perfume for the bridal party.

“Gold is hard to carry off, but when you succeed it’s super glamorous,” adds Sinclair Sellars. “And you don’t have to create an overwhelming metallic look; maids could wear pale gold chiffon, for example, but going all-out with a glitzy gold and silver wedding does work well in city venues.”

Use accessories such as fabric, ribbon, glitter, gold leaves or twigs to add a golden sparkle. For the venue, gold containers set the scene, but keep the flowers simple.”

As well as being a traditional symbol of romance, carrying a bouquet of red roses makes a real statement, says Levine: “With their velvety petals and rich colour, the Grand Prix or red Naomi roses are perfect for bridal bouquets.”

There are other ways to include touches of red throughout the day — your wedding is a great excuse to splash out on a pair of Christian Louboutin’s famous red-soled shoes, for starters!

Aoife suggests serving cranberry martinis or mulled wine, as well as non-alcoholic grenadine-based cocktails. Red velvet cake is popular with American brides, or Aoife rates the painted rose crown cakes from the little venice cake company with their striking red finish.

“Working with ivory creates a classic winter wedding scene,” says Lesley. “Tall ivory manzanita trees look amazing, decorated with hanging tea lights and crystals, while two large ivory urns filled with ivory roses, manzanita branches and hanging crystals create the perfect backdrop for saying ‘I do’.” She suggests continuing the effect at the reception with crystal place name holders and crystals scattered on tables.

“With angels at the forefront of everyone’s minds, why not help your maids create an angelic feel? Ivory is commonly teamed with feathers and/or furs but, if you’re worried it will look a little stark, add colour in the flowers, shoes or make-up.”

“Winter green is a wonderful, natural choice and using winter green foliage with varying textures should be minimal in cost,” says Levine. “Combining green tea roses with the foliage will add a touch of elegance.”

“Darker and deeper shades of green are perfect for a warming winter wedding — think forest, fir cones and log fires,” says Sinclair. “Consider having different shades for each maid to give depth to the photos.”

Green also gives eco-conscious brides a memorable way to continue the theme in favours and stationery made from recycled material, as well as in their colour palette, adds Aoife

Navy is a classic colour that suits practically everyone, but Sinclair insists it doesn’t have to be a dull option: “It gives you a blank canvas to add other colours and themes — and it looks amazing with charcoal faux fur.”

Aoife suggests pairing it with silver or accent shades of cerise for a stunning winter look. And to add elegance and impact to the venue, she advises brides to use blue glass and blueberry-based cocktails — or ice-blue up-lighting for a magical wintery feel.

“Hints of navy are effortlessly classy,” says Lesley. “Accent your order of service with blue satin and have blue cupcake cases; navy blue calligraphy on place names looks sensational too.”
