WONDER INSTALLATION LESSON PLAN by Christina King and Cheryl Wildermuth

�Objective: To expose students to the concept of empathy through integrating ELA and Visual Arts classes.

Goal: To illustrate student precept and display student work as district wide collaborative project.

Materials: Gesso primed foam core puzzle piece-both sides (15” x 22” per student) Acrylic paints, water crayons, colored pencils, permanent markers, paint

markers Large brushes

Optional: paint combs, credit cards, palette knives, sponges, stamps, sequin waste, bubble wrap

Collage Materials; newspaper, magazines, tissue paper, painted papers Mod Podge Matte Medium Handouts with Precepts

Procedure: (Based on seeing students two 40 minute periods per week.) Students begin reading the book, WONDER by R. J. Palacio, with their ELA teacher.

Week 1: Have students paint or draw background on foam core.Week 2: Paint second side of foam core.

When dry, trace outline for slots on puzzle pieces.Week 3: Discuss precepts and empathy with students. Students peruse precepts and write their own with ELA teacher or art teacher.

Students begin collage process or draw and paint on board.Week 4: Begin writing/collaging precept on puzzle piece.Week 5: Add details to board..Week 6: Students write reflection. Finalize details
