At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic pro-grams have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual ac-colades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study con-ducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffi n Uni-versity in the last fi ve years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. One year in the GLIAC is all it took for the Tiffi n women’s basketball team to realize what it takes to be a contender in the NCAA Division II ranks. Coming off a 7-20 record, with many of those losses by 10 points or less, the Dragons know that not only does it take prime physical conditioning but also complete mental focus to get to the top. Now with the knowledge of what to expect in the GLIAC, head coach Pam Oswald has set the bar very high but with very reachable goals in mind.

The 2008-2009 squad started off rocky going 1-5 in their fi rst 6 games. The Dragons’ fi rst win in the GLIAC came in an 85-68 victory over foe Ferris State University. Tiffi n started off their fi rst campaign in their new conference by going 3-2 in their fi rst 5 games. Staring at a 4-6 record the Dragons faced a diffi cult road ahead with several players becoming injured and unable to perform. Tiffi n went on to only win 3 more games throughout the year. Without a deep bench to turn to the Dragons dropped 9 of their remaining 14 losses by 10 points or less.

This year’s Tiffi n squad is very young, returning 2 seniors and 2 juniors while adding 5 freshmen to the mix. Two returning starters anchor the Dragon attack in junior guard/forward Holly Focke and sophomore guard Mandy Jaeb. Senior center Katrina Clark looks to rebound from only 13 games a year ago and provide a physical presence in the paint. Junior guard Samantha McCall and sophomore

guard Jennifer Johnston look to provide their threat from the 3 point line and knowledge of the system to spark the Drag-ons. After a season ending injury last year, redshirt freshman center Jessica Harris looks to put what she learned last year to use on the court. Rounding out the squad is freshmen guards Karli Mast, Melissa Gilliland, Stephanie Kelly, Jordan Jenkins and center Jonette McQueen.

BACKCOURT

This year’s strength again lies in the backcourt. The 2009-2010 backcourt is young with only one upperclassman. It is comprised of 1 junior, 2 sophomores, and 4 freshmen. Although young, Mandy Jaeb started almost every game last season and is the leading returner in scoring. Jennifer Johnston was one of the fi rst players off the bench from a year ago and Samantha McCall brings with her 2 years of experience in Coach Oswald’s system. Although 4 freshmen added to the backcourt seems like a lot of inexperience, every single player comes from elite high school programs and have had plenty of success at the state level.

Sophomore point guard Mandy Jaeb is looking to build upon last year’s season. As the returning leading scorer with 10.5 ppg, Jaeb is also looking to fi ll the assist column as the fl oor general. Jaeb’s defi nite strength is her quickness on defense, compiling 44 steals just a year ago. Jaeb has worked hard in the offseason on taking the ball to the hoop and drawing contact to get to the foul line. Opponents will want to keep her off the line after shooting a team high 86% from the charity stripe.

Jennifer Johnston was a staple off the bench for the Dragons a year ago. The sophomore guard is looking to fi ll one of the vacant starting spots this season. Johnston showed what she is capable of in a game versus Slippery Rock University last season when she scored 10 points in just 12 minutes of play and shooting nearly 40% from the 3 pt. line. Junior Saman-tha McCall looks to use 2 years of experience to have an impact this year. McCall can be a threat when left open from the 3 pt. line. Knowing the opportunity is there McCall has worked on other aspects of her game over the offseason.The backcourt is rounded out by the addition of 4 freshmen. Stephanie Kelly, Karli Mast, Melissa Gilliland, and Jordan Jenkins look to add their presence in the lineup this season.

2009-10 Season Preview

FRONTCOURT

This year’s Dragon frontcourt provides a little experience but also plenty of young raw talent. This year’s group has a hard-nosed, aggressive style that possesses the skill to do things not only around the bucket but from outside facing the bucket also.

Junior forward Holly Focke provides a versatility that can prove to be very diffi cult for opponents. Averaging nearly 7 ppg, Focke was also second on the team in rebounding at 6 rpg, third on the team in steals with 34, and second on the team in assists with 75 and blocked 11 shots. Focke not only pos-sesses the quickness in the post to take you off the dribble, the strength to get points with her back to the basket, but also can hit the trey, shooting 38% from behind the arc.

Senior center Katrina Clark is entering her second season with the Dragons. Only playing in 13 games a year ago with 10 starts, Clark is looking to use her aggressive style of play to anchor the post. Hav-ing a year in the Tiffi n system will help Clark establish herself more on the court and in the battles down low.

Jessica Harris is entering her second year with the Dragons. After a season ending injury early in the year, Harris is looking to bounce back and use that year of experience watching and coaching her teammates on the court.

Senior center Alexis Karel is physically unable to perform this season due to recent knee surgery. Karel played the last 2 seasons under Coach Oswald. Karel will use her knowledge of the system to help guide the underclassmen and provide an extra set of eyes for the coaching staff.

The only newcomer to the frontcourt is freshman center Jonette McQueen, who looks to make her 6 foot 3 inch presence felt down low.

THE SCHEDULE

The 2009-2010 season starts off with regional opponent Slippery Rock University on Nov. 15th on the campus of Tiffi n University. The Dragons then log the miles when they fl y to Merrimack College outside of Boston, Mas-sachusetts for the Merrimack Tournament on Nov. 20th and 21st. Tiffi n travels to Pennsylvania Conference pow-erhouse Gannon University (ranked #21 in the nation) on Dec.8th before closing out their non-conference schedule at home with future GLIAC foe Lake Erie college on

Dec. 28th. The Dragons’ GLIAC championship bid begins when they travel to the 13th ranked team in the nation Grand Valley State University on Dec.3rd.

Pam Oswald is entering her third season as the head coach of the Dragons women’s bas-ketball team for the upcoming 2009-10 season

Last season Oswald led Tiffin to a 7-20 record in their first full season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

During the 2007-08 season Tiffin struggled early on, but the young team showed resolve late by winning three of its final eight contests—including a double-digit road win in the regular-season finale. Finishing the 2007-08 season with a record of 12-15, the Dragons were 5-10 against GLIAC opponents.

In three years as an assistant coach at Wheeling Jesuit University, she helped the Cardinals compile an impressive 67-26 record—with two back to back seasons of 20 plus wins. Oswald’s contributions at Wheeling Jesuit saw the Cardinals post their most wins since 1992-93 (27), and advance to the NCAA Tournament twice—a first in the programs history. They also captured the 2005 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.

During the 2005-06 season Oswald stepped in as interim head coach for ten games, racking up an impressive 9-1 record during WVIAC play. Under Oswald’s tutelage six players were selected as All-WVIAC honorees.

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Oswald spent three seasons (2001-2004) as an as-sistant coach at Kent State University.

During her time at Kent State she worked with both guards and post players (developing two All-MAC selection post players). While at Kent State the Golden Flashes were the 2002 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champions, participatingin the NCAA tournament in 2002 & the WNIT in 2004.

A native of Berlin, OH Oswald joined the Flashes after spending 2 seasons as an assistant at her alma-mater Berlin-Hiland High School where she helped coach them to a 28-0 record and a Division IV State Championship in 2000.

A 1995 graduate of Malone College in Canton, OH, Oswald was inducted into the Malone Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2006 with a career total of 1,681 points and 1,127 rebounds. Oswald holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications/Broadcast.

jon TUCKER1st season assistant coach Wooster, Ohio Alderson Broaddus ‘05

Jon Tucker enters his first season with the Dragons, after spending three years working with the women’s program at Alderson Broaddus as an assistant coach. His responsibilities include being recruiting coordinator, scouting and working with the team’s post players.

A Wooster, OH native, Tucker also assisted at his alma-mater Triway High School with the boys basketball team. During the 2005-06 season the Titans were the Division II Ohio State Runner-Up, posting a 26-1 record.

Kylene Spiegel enters her first season on staff after closing out her playing career with the Dragons. Spiegel, who works with the Dragons perimeter players, is also responsible for coordinating team travel and community ser-vice events.

Spiegel graduated from Tiffin University in 2009 after a four-year career that saw her earn All-Conference and All-Independent honors while finishing with 1105 points. She holds TU career records for assists with 468, good for a 4.4 per game average. She also holds the single season record with 143 assists. She has a degree in Sports Management and is currently pursuing her Mas-ter's degree from Tiffin University.

Tiffi n University enters its second season as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tiffi n University is the league’s 14th full member and sponsors 18 of the GLIAC’s 20 championship sports. Located in on a 110-acre campus in Tiffi n, Ohio, Tiffi n University was founded in 1888 and is entering its 11th year of NCAA Division II status. Tiffi n is the third institution from the state of Ohio to join the GLIAC. Ashland University, located in Ashland, Ohio, joined the league on July 1, 1995. The University of Findlay, in Findlay, Ohio, began competing in the league on July 1, 1997. The GLIAC’s members in Michigan include: Ferris State University, Grand

Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Wayne State University. 2009 Tiffi n University Shoot Out

The Tiffi n University Women’s Basketball Team is hosting their third annual high school summer shoot out on June 11-13, 2010. This three-day event is open to high school varsity girls basketball teams looking for competitive games and an overall good experience. Coaches can choose to play three, six, or nine games over the course of one or two days. To ensure each team gets the experience they were looking for, each coach can choose to play in the top level, mid level, or lower level. You can expect the Tiffi n University Summer Shoot Out to be a well organized event with games that run on time. All games will be offi ciated by licensed offi cials. Tiffi n University’s women’s basketball program has underwent numerous changes in the 90-plus years that the Dragons have had bas-ketball. The women’s team saw action sporadically during the fi rst two decades of this century, but started to play a regular schedule in 1924-25, fi nishing 10-0 that year. The program continued until the close of the 1936-37 season, posting a 54-28-3 record during that stretch. Dragons leaders included Hall of Famer Edith Miller. The program didn’t return for another 48 years. In 1984-85, women’s basketball fi nally returned to Tiffi n University, posting a winning record in its third year after returning (12-11 in 1986-87). In 1990-91, TU won its only Mid-Ohio Conference title, fi nishing 18-9 that season under Annette Kessler in her fi rst season with the program. The Dragons also currently have seven women’s basketball players in the Tiffi n University Hall of Fame - Edith Yambert Miller, Lois Collins Conrad, Tracy Almanson-Murphy, Angie Shardo Nunn, Susan Miller Hughes, Jenny Kane, and Melanie Sears. Six years ago the Dragons earned their fi rst ever NAIA Nation-al Tournament trip under coach Leslie Mugg. Angie Nunn is the Drag-ons’ all-time leading scorer with 1820 points, while Tracy Almanson is the leading rebounder with 802. But this season’s Dragons have many players who could easily change the face of the TU women’s basketball record books before their careers are through.

2009 Dragons in the CommunityTiffi n women’s basketball believes in giv-ing back to the community that they are a part of here in Tiffi n, Ohio. Throughout the course of the year the ladies reach out in a variety of different ways through bas-ketball clinics, reading at local elementary schools and helping to keep the roadside clean along state route 224.

The women’s team and staff hold 2 bas-ketball clinics a year to reach out to boys and girls in grades K-5 to help them with their basketball fundamentals. The clinics are free and a great chance for the kids to receive one on one attention from colle-giate basketball players and the coaching staff.

If you drive out of Tiffi n on state route 224 towards Findlay you may have noticed the Tiffi n University Women’s Basketball Adopt-a-Highway sign before. The team was award-ed the Gold Star Group for their dedication and diligence to cleaning that mile stretch of highway since 2005. The Dragons understand that community involves people as well as the environment and that it is important to take care of both.

The Dragons also visit local elementary schools and enjoy having the opportunity to read to the classes. They also answer ques-tions and remind the class that hard work in the classroom is very important. The Dragon athletes are great role models for our youth of tomorrow here in the Tiffi n community.
