Women's fashion in the 1890’sWomen in this time were required to wear corsets which allowed them to have a “thinner” appeal.

Hourglass silhouettes defined most women’s form, but by the mid 1800’s the Aesthetic and Reform movements started to influence Women and what they wore.

Women wanted clothing they could easily move and breath in.

Women were inspired to be more physically active and to go to work.

The 1890s saw the rise of the ready-to-wear garment industry and the rise of new labor unions.

Men’s fashion 1890’s For causal activities such as sports and sailing, men usually wore blazers or brightly colored flannel coats with brass buttons and patch pockets.

For formal occasions men wore day suits, in various colours and materials to broaden their wardrobes.

Mens jackets and trousers started to become more narrow and fitting.

Earlier in this century, top hats remained a requirement for the upper class formal wear.

Women's fashion in the 1900’sWomen in the 1900’s were often seen “modeling” disfiguring contraptions with long, heavy and frilled skirts with puffy and lacy blouses.

In 1908, however, a new look for women, in tailored suits, blouses, and skirts, emerged. The women in the image below illustrate the extremities of the early 1900’s.

Women and girls kept their legs hidden with long dresses or skirts, because it was socially unacceptable for them to show their skin.

Men’s fashion in the 1900’sIn this century men’s fashion adapted due to the growth of the fashion industries in London and Paris

Fashion in this time period was ordered by the time of day and followed the strict rules of only morning coats until noon, lounge suits until 6 o’clock, and certain evening clothes depending on the occasion.

Men also had different types of coats for various occasions and seasons along with various neck ties, shirts and trousers.

Men and boys often kept their coats, jackets and ties on, even in hot weather.

Women's fashion in 19101910’s fashion for women consisted of shortcut hair,big hats and reformed corsets that were less restrictive for women to wear.

Even though hemlines on dresses began to rise women still covered their feet with long boots and dark stockings.

During this time because a majority of the men were off at war, women soon began to step into male employed workplaces.

Because they required to do work that required significant amounts of movement they began to wear more masculine and loose fitting clothing.

Men's fashion 1910 Men wore suits during the day, formal tailcoats for evening, and slightly more casual attire for sporting events.

The most popular suit for men was the sack suit, which were long, plain, loose fitting suit jackets with one to three buttons.

The jacket hung with straight opening edges.

The overall look was a box shape jacket with pants with roomy hips and legs that hung straight down to the ankles.

The colours of the suits were usually brown and dark navy green or gray

To top off their outfits men also wore Homburg hats

Vintage aspect and style.

Women changed their clothing many times during the day meaning,There was an outfit for every time of day, type of outing, and type of party.

Women had different types of home dresses, street wear or outing clothing, and party dresses.

After the war there were significantly less male suitors for women to choose from, instead of waiting for husbands women in the 1920s decided that they should enjoy life instead.

Men's fashion 1920

Except for blue collar workers, and college men in the 1920’s wore suits that in many ways were similar to the suits worn today.

Like most people throughout history men in the 1920’s dressed based on the occasion they were participating in, which included sports, formal events, or casual outdoor activities.
