Women in Today’s SocietyAn Ongoing Issue of Inequality & Power

Women in Society of 2016

Equality has been an issue for many years, and there have been many ideas and problems surrounding it

Even after all of these years, women are still not being treated the same as men, regardless of their education or professionalism

This issue can be explained through the social interactionism theory and the feminist theory

Page 3: Women in today’s society

Inequality in the Workplace Women are treated far worse than men A women’s income is 61% of a mans total income (Centre for Social

Justice, 2016) Women are not given equal opportunities, seen as incapable of doing

the same job as male Even though women hold the same degree/education as male, they

are not being hired Women with a registered apprenticeship or trades certificate earned

only 65 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts (The Conference Board of Canada, 2016)

Young women with no high school diploma earned 67 cents for every dollar earned by young men with the same level of education (The Conference Board of Canada, 2016)

Today’s Situation

As you can see from this graph above, over the years the overall income between men and women is significantly different

Inequality in Society Gender inequality also plays a role on how women are viewed

overall in society (Social Interactionism) Different cultures treat women poorly which creates discrimination

against women For example, In India, pre-natal sex selection and infanticide

accounted for the pre-natal termination and death of half a million girls per year over the last 20 years (Advocates for Youth, 2008) and is different in other cultures

Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16 (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2015)

Possible Solutions A possible solution to this problem would be to allow more

women to be in higher powered positions Big businesses are usually run by men, which makes it more

likely for a man to promote a man because he feels more competent of them

If women were put in charge and allowed high up positions it would create hope and diminish the discrimination and stigma around women and their roles in the work place

Possible Solutions Educating businesses that equality in the long run have

links to higher returns on investments and incomes (Hasler, 2013)

When there is equality and equilibrium in the workplace it has been proven that the work result are better and this will result in better overall income for the business

Educating the people in the businesses that put women down and only hire men to see the problem will help to get rid of the inequality

Possible Solutions Making gender equality a part of training in jobs, volunteer

work and school could be a possible solution to help stop the prejudice

Enforcing these rules at the workplace, in school or volunteer places to follow through

A large reason why there is such a large gap is due to the lack of education of the problem between men and women

Possible Solutions

Offering the proper help for women in the workplace is also a solution, so that they can have the same chance to be as successful as men

Giving them the extra training they need, equal pay, assistance with child care are just some of the things that could help create more equality.

Conclusion In conclusion gender inequality is a very prominent

issue still in society today. It derives from the sociological interactionism

theory because women are being discriminated on based on certain prejudice that have been created throughout society.

Establishing equal pay, 50/50 worker ratios, proper training and education to everyone is just a start if we ever want to get rid of the gap.
