Women in the past And
Women now inMallorca
Mallorca is an island which has been invaded many times. Throughout history it has gone through many changes and women’s lives reflect this varied history. We hope to show you some of the changes which have happened over the years.
Women were expected to stay at home and look after their families. In those days it was very normal for women to have more than 4 children.
When women were courting, they could never be by themselves with their boyfriends and so they were always accompanied either by other family members or friends of the same sex.
Life was hard for women and quite a few of them had to emigrate with their families.
Mallorca was a very traditional and religious society and this affected women a lot. For example, they had to wear black for a long time when a member of their family died.
With the passing of time and the arrival of the tourist boom, women started to work with tourists although it wasn’t considered correct for them to sunbathe like the foreign women who came on holiday.
Another job which was popular among women who were able to study was being a teacher.
Nowadays girls can study at university and get a degree. They don't have to stay at home doing housework all the time
Nowadays, women have less children because they have a job away from home.
The girl of the 21st century can wear unisex clothes (trousers, jeans, etc.) and other clothes that were just for men in the 40s or 50s. We can also wear tank tops, miniskirts, etc.
It's very common for girls to have short hair, something very unusual in our granny's time. They usually had their hair in plaits or buns.
Nowadays there are as many female drivers as male drivers.
Women can vote nowadays, our grandmothers or greatgrandmothers weren't allowed
Now we are free to express ourselves and to go wherever we want alone or with other women. We go out at night to concerts, we go on journeys, etc.
Nowadays women can have their own bank accounts so that they can keep their own savings. We have become independent from husbands or fathers
This presentation was made by the students of 1IB as part of the Comenius project: Gender Role Inequalities.
