Meet the Teacher

- Jordan Anchors and Mina Dryden

This month’s Meet the Teacher is our

new 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Corinne

Lamb. She grew up in Rockford, Illinois

and went to high school in Clearwater,

FL. She is a former figure skater and was

an NFL cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mrs. Lamb has been

teaching since 1996 when she decided to pursue her dream of teaching

at the age of 38. She went to college at the University of South Florida

and then stayed in South Florida to start her teaching career. Mrs. Lamb

has 3 kids who are 20, 23, and 26. While Mrs. Lamb was teaching in

Clearwater, she lost 2 former students in the Parkland Shooting.

However, this didn’t stop her from continuing to pursue her dream. Mrs.

Lamb became a teacher because she loves “seeing the lightbulb go off

in kids’ heads when they finally understand something.” We are so glad

that Mrs. Lamb has decided to join us at Liberty Pines Academy and we

hope she has a great year.

Students of the Month

- Kaitlyn Greenwald and Libby Williams

Our first student of the month is Ty

Hayes from Mrs. Tilley’s third grade

class. Ty’s favorite subject is science

and he enjoys using the tools involved

with it. Ty enjoys playing baseball as an

after school sport. He enjoys playing

with his sister and his friends. Mrs.

Tilley says Ty goes above and beyond in

class by following directions and setting

a good example for the other students.

Ty is always really helpful and is ready

to learn when he walks into class. Our second student of the

month is Christopher Li in Mrs.

Krusemark’s 4th grade class.

Christopher is a role model in

class; he always helps clean and

is always very respectful, Mrs.

Krusemark says. He likes to

write in class and for fun, he also

likes to read fantasy books. He

likes playing flag football with

his friends and brother.

Christopher said he also loves to

play with his two cats and his

dog for fun.

- Lianna Mound and Samantha Solomon

Recently, on the 22nd and 24th of January, 31,

middle school students auditioned for the

Mary Poppins, Jr. play, and they all did a

fantastic job. The casting list was posted on

Mrs. Herkel’s door soon after auditions. The

show dates are April 25th, 26th, and 27th. Be

sure to mark your calendars!

The 7th grade drama classes are working on

puppetry. They are writing scripts and making

puppets to perform in front of the class. The

8th grade classes are reading the classic 12

Angry Men and learning about the justice

system. The 8th grade advanced class is

working on scene work. They are choosing a

play scene and memorizing it to perform with

their groups.

The talent show was held January 31st at 6

p.m. The cost to get in was 2 cans of non-

perishable food to be donated to a local food

pantry. Thank you to all who participated.

Golf Team Tryouts

- Libby Williams

On January 30th St. Johns Golf and Country Club hosted LPA’s

golf tryouts. Coach Bob Staninger has stepped up and

volunteered to coach our team this year. Tryouts were open

to 5th through 8th graders. The first round of tryouts were held

at 3:00 on Wednesday and went very well. Cuts have been

made and the remaining players will go to a second try out on

February 5th, at the same time and place. Good luck Wolves!

Look for a roster posting in next month’s newsletter.

Tennis Tryouts

- Nidhi Samaluru and Jordan Anchors

The season of tennis is right around the corner! Tennis

team tryouts were on January 30, from 3:00 to 4:30.

Students had to preregister on the St. Johns middle

school athletic association website, sjmsaa.com. If you

have any questions you can contact the tennis

commissioner, Ashley Miller, at

[email protected]. Good Luck to our wolves this

tennis season! Look for a posting of the roster in next

Girls 7/8 and 6th Grade Basketball

The Liberty Pines 7/8th grade girls basketball team played

Valley Ridge on January 22nd. They fought really hard, but

the girls lost. On that same day, our 6th grade girls team

took home the win, 15-9, against Mill Creek Academy. On

Thursday, our 7th and 8th grade girls team lost against Fruit

Cove Middle School, 44-17. Our 6th grade girls are still

undefeated with another win on Thursday, against Palm

Valley Academy. #11, Erica Lego is “excited to see how we

will grow” and I think we all can agree that we are all

excited to see how our girls can improve and win. Come out

and support our girls Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30, and

as Taylor Reid (#4) said, “Game on!!”

Boys 7/8 and 6th Grade Basketball

Our Liberty Pines Boys basketball teams have started off

this season as champs. The 7th and 8th grade boys played

Valley Ridge Academy on Tuesday, January 22nd and won

36-15! Also on Tuesday, our 6th grade boys team played

Mill Creek and won 49-2. On Thursday, January 24th, our 7th

and 8th graders played Fruit Cove Middle School and won

49-48! Our 6th grade boys sadly lost their game 15-26

against Palm Valley Academy, but it’s alright because it

makes room for improvement! When we asked Dylan Bragg

(#4), what he hoped to achieve by the end of the season he

said, “I hope we make the playoffs and grow and build as a

team.” Make sure to come out and support our boys

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30!

NOTICE: The St. Johns Middle School Athletic Association (”SJMSAA”) middle school sports program is not operated or sponsored by the St. Johns County School District. SJMSAA is an independent, private non-profit corporation, which uses District middle school names and facilities under a license agreement with the District, and which is solely responsible for the operation of the SJMSAA middle school sports program and its individual teams.

Reading Buddies

- Lianna Mound and Samantha Solomon

The week of the 14th, while many of the 8th graders were at Washington DC on their trip, Mrs. Houston took some of her language arts students to read to kindergarten classes. The 8th graders chose a book from the library, then when they got to the kindergarten class, they were paired up with 2-3 kindergarteners. After the book was finished, the kindergarteners got a chance to read to the 8th graders. The classes we visited include Mrs. Lamkin, Mrs. Dudley, Mrs. Shepherd, and Mrs. Samuels. “The students loved hearing the big kids read to them and the 8th graders did a fantastic job entertaining the kindergarteners,” said Mrs. Dudley. Mrs. Lamkin said, “Some of my kids who will not read with anyone else actually read with their reading buddy.”

The First Coast Honors Choir Festival

- Taylor Moore and Nidhi Samaluru

The First Coast Honors Choir Festival was held Saturday January 26. Nineteen LPA 4th through 7th graders performed several songs, one of which included sign language. This one-day event honored local fourth through seventh grade children who have been recognized by their music educators for their singing ability, musical aptitude and strong work ethic. The children spent the day rehearsing with a nationally recognized clinician and conductor. The event culminated in a performance of the newly-formed Honors Choir. These selected kids have been practicing 2 times a week. They performed with over 150 kids from Florida and parts of Georgia.

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! was January 28 – February 1. The goal for this

year’s Celebrate Literacy Week was to promote literacy and excellent reading

habits in our students. This year our theme was Spreading Literacy, One View at a

Time. Students enjoyed Guest Readers, including District personnel, reading to

students throughout the week. Students also participated in theme days -

Of The Year Celebrations

- Nuo Gjeloshaj

It’s that time of year again when we celebrate a new teacher

of the year, a rookie teacher of the year, and a staff member.

Congratulations to Mrs. Stacy Raya for teacher of the year,

and to Mrs. Krista Willim for rookie teacher of the year! Only

one of each, (rookie and teacher), is chosen each year. “It’s a

huge honor to be chosen by my peers at such a wonderful

school,” Mrs. Krista Willim stated. She has been teaching for

only two years, (hence the award “Rookie Teacher”), but she

was also a sub for two years prior. Mrs. Stacy Raya has been

teaching for 21 years total, but this is her 8th year at LPA.

When Mrs. Stacy Raya asked what makes a good teacher she

replied, “A good teacher is dedicated to her students, and is

patient, kind and challenges her students.” So once again,

congratulations to Mrs. Stacy Raya and Mrs. Krista Willim!

We all appreciate all of your hard work. Congratulations also

to Mrs. Lindsey Waggoner, our staff member of the month.

She will be recognized at a banquet on March 14th.
