Sancho Designs:

‘The most I’ve ever engaged with something [to the point where it made me drop out of my Honours year at Art School] was an in-flight magazine article about these 2 dudes, Ben & Jerry, of the now infa-mous Ben & Jerry ice-cream. They were two high school friends who after a trail of dead end jobs, de-cided to pool their limited resources together to open up a scoop shop. They just kept working at it, and they got there. Most inspi-rational!

After reading this, I was so inspired to do my own thing, I wanted to create a new industry label particu-lar to T-shirt graphic design, to pro-duce T-shirts which stand out in a saturated market.

I see the tee as a great platform to get more affordable, wearable, art to the masses.

I guess that street art is an extension to this idea. Unlike the artwork on the private walls of an artist’s studio / gallery, street art takes place in the public eye and is accessible to all.

I’ve never liked showing stuff I make in an official gallery space. I think cos it’s always a bit like “tough crowd” criticism and somewhat exclusive to the gallery community.

With paste-ups in the street, you don’t have to dick-around with applica-tion writing or pay for the space. It’s casual, interactive and constantly changing.

It’s been 2 years since we started working on this bad boy, and I’m getting more and more excited. 2012 should be a good one for the Sancho team.’ -Sancho Murphy

Christiane Nowak :

German born, Chris has been living in Canberra since February. She studied Product Design at Bauhaus University in Weimar and interned at BMW MINI design in the colour and trim design team.

‘Projects in the context of sustainability, user-centred design and functionality have always been of great interest to me. Facing new ways of looking at a problem leads to a greater understanding of the usage of technologies and materials. During the process of a new design it is fascinating when your virtual ideas and concepts come to life by developing them with your own hands. Working on models in a workshop, creating objects and redefining them again and again until they become perfect copies of your own imagina-tion.’ Christiane Nowak

Travis Heinrich :

Some of you might be familiar with his work from it's screen time in Knighty this month. The videos feature close-up, slow burning cigarettes, chemical reactions, air and water fractals, por-traits of light and a trip to the dentist.

Travis works in digital video, photography and installation and is currently completing his honours in Photomedia at the ANU.

‘My subject matter is often banal, overlooked events. I employ a ‘heavy’ aesthetic to heighten the experience and draw the viewer in.

I always carry my camera, it’s an attempt to capture unexpected phenomenon.’

Travis Heinrich
