The US DOE Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP)
became the nation’s first operating underground
repository for radioactive defense wastes in 1999.
The WIPP facility, located in southeastern New
Mexico, was designed for permanent disposal of
radioactive transuranic waste, the byproduct of
nuclear weapons research and production. Project
facilities include disposal rooms excavated 2,150
feet underground in an ancient, stable salt
formation.
