You can do this by customising your privacy settings in the apps/ programmes you are using If you get contact requests, rude or inappropriate messages which make you uncomfortable, block the sender and tell a trusted adult. Print a copy of these messages for evidence. It is also good to report this to the website/ mobile service directly. There are laws against computer misuse, grooming and harassment amongst other offences, and you have the right to feel secure Never meet an Internet friend on your own. If you want to meet an Internet friend, take a trusted adult with you, and meet in a public place Social network, messenger and chat services like Facebook, Bebo, Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare, Windows Live Messenger, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Skype, Whatsapp and Viber, can be great for keeping in touch with friends and family! Most of these services have a minimum age before you can join - 13 for Facebook! Once you have an account, you can access these services on a range of devices including the iPad, Xbox, Nintendo DS and smart phones! The following are a few pointers to keep in mind: Use a pin code on your mobile phone, and switch off or ‘hide’ Bluetooth when you are not using it, to limit misuse by others. Giving your phone a unique name which doesn’t identify its model or owner is also a good idea! If you have been receiving premium texts which use your credit, you can stop this by texting (the service) the word STOP.
