Who is the (Teen) Stranger in My House? Utilizing Tools to

Navigate the Teen PhaseYour child as a teen can seem like a stranger you hardly recognize…your world is probably being rocked by more than loud music. What is going on inside that head? And how are you responding? Exercises and activities will help you understand how to get the parenting results you want. What parents say: “This helped me remember what it was like…and to see from their viewpoint…I can support them more than just loving them.”

Engaging Encounters

Engaging Encounters focuses on both adolescents (10 years of age to 18 years) and parents of adolescents through student academics and personal life skill acquisition to generatively promote adulthood as young people grow to assume it responsibly.

Bullying: Unmasking It for TeensAges 12-18

Bullying has an awareness as never before. It happens in schools, on-line, and elsewhere. Despite growing awareness of how serious it is, students still endure it and keep quiet about it. Its affects can hamper students’ own healthy development by not knowing what to do about it. When students learn what the bully mask is, they can see what they need to do to change the bully victim pattern.

Bullying for Parents: The Surprise about Who

Wears the Bully MaskBullying is everywhere - but how do you help a teen cope? What are the indicators that may signal a teen is being bullied and/or having a difficult time? Looking behind the bully and bully victim masks reveals what can be done toward stopping the bully dance. This class is geared toward the parents of teens.

Engaging Teens Conference:Assembling & Advocating for

Adolescents to Assume Adult Life with Success

Presents “What do teens say parents and family members do that annoy them the most...and shuts down their desire to communicate? (And what can teens and others do?)”Mini-sessions, teen panels, experts, interactive exchanges, video presentation, and Engaging Encounters activities will generate discussion and solutions that engage teens or parents - or both collaboratively - to utilize at home to grow teen responsibility where they say they most want and need guidance and support. Conference topic developed this past year in Engaging Encounters focus and small teen group discussions where adolescents expressed their annoyances at home that fall in these categories: parents not hearing them; respect at home; money & job worries; education goals and expectations; assumptions adults make about teens. Teens can attend alone, with friends, or with parent(s).

Soul CollagePersonal Exploration

Through ImageryYou can learn more about yourself, your motivations and inspirations through S o u l C o l l a g e ® . SoulCollage® is a

creative process of making beautiful collaged cards from images you are drawn to. The cards are then used to gain self-knowledge and insight. Each card has a personal meaning to the creator that represents part of their life. This self-exploration may lend opportunity to access a range of feelings and emotions. There are 4 different types of card suits that will be explored. These include aspects of your inner self; people; pets and wisdom figures that have been important in your life; companion animal energies for each of the energy centers known as chakras; and the archetypal energies. The first class will introduce you to the SoulCollage® process and the four types of cards. You will make at least one card per class. This new technique is taught by a trained facilitator. No art experience necessary. All supplies are provided. www.SoulCollage.com

English and Writing Skills for the ACT & Beyond

Especially for 10th - 12th graders, this class focuses on English, reading, and writing skills for students taking the ACT in March or April, 2014. This 6 week class begins with a pre-test, shows what to expect on the English, Reading, and Essay sections of the test, and provides instruction in writing a persuasive essay. All skills have applications to everyday reading and writing, which students will realize are useful for life. Yes, there is life after the ACT!Reading and test-taking strategies will be included, but the emphasis will be on understanding and using principles of standard written English. Three practice tests will familiarize students with test formats. Approximately three hours of homework will be assigned each week. Therefore, students should consider their schedules when enrolling in this class. Those who attend all sessions of the class and complete all the homework can expect their mastery of written English, test-taking confidence, and scores to improve.ACT & BEYOND- 611101WSATURDAYS 9:30AM-NOON 1/11-2/22CEC/123 $250.00 / 6WKS (NO CLASS 2/01)

Mrs. Shelley Jackson will introduce your child to the Spanish language and culture through communicative and interactive activities such as singing, games and stories. Each session is open to new enrollments as well as continuing students. Research shows that learning a foreign language at a young age helps develop strong problem solving and analytical skills. At this age, children are able to naturally and easily acquire a second language. Join in on the fun! (Ages 3-5)

ACT Preparation WorkshopAll Squared Away, L.L.C. is offering a three-hour ACT Preparation Workshop to help high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors prepare to confidently take the ACT. This is done by explaining the format of the test, sharing the types of questions to expect for each section of the test, teaching general and specific test-taking strategies, giving tips for pacing during the test, explaining the rubric for the Writing Test, as well as administering and correcting mini practice tests. The best way to reduce anxiety and increase confidence is to be familiar with expectations. The requirement of all juniors in MI to take the ACT as part of the Michigan Merit Exam (given in March) makes it essential that students proactively prepare. Students should bring a pencil and calculator. A manual that includes a complete practice test will be provided for in-class and home use. Young Rembrandts After SchoolOur elementary learners are at the crucial time of development when they decide whether they’re good at something or not. This decision will affect not only the rest of their academic career, but their lifetime learning as well. The Young Rembrandts elementary program provides the tools this age-group needs to succeed at drawing - a teaching tool from which the majority of learners prefer and ALL learners benefit! Our program works because it’s not only hands-on and visual...it’s simply fun. Add to this our innovative guided instruction, topics that kids love and relate to, and instructors that know how to reach this group; we take kids from thinking they’re not ‘artists’ to knowing they can achieve this, and everything else, they put their minds to. Simply The Best (Motor/Social Skills Development)

“Simply The Best” is specifically designed to enhance the sensorimotor development of children. The purpose is to promote neurological growth, develop motor skills, improve body awareness and cultivate a healthy self-esteem. If your child has a problem with basic skill development, movement, or learning problems, he/she may benefit from this program. Sessions are available for individuals not experiencing problems but would like to further develop their motor skills.

Times will be arranged with parents according to placement of the child. A sensorimotor Assessment ($65 fee) is strongly recommended for appropriate placement. Parents may be required to participate if their child is very young or has special needs that are more severe. This class is led by Ann Platte,

Adult MastersThis program is offered by Ty Parker, head coach of the Portage Aquatic Club. The philosophy of the Masters Swim Team is to provide fun, fitness, and friendly competition (if desired), in a positive environment of athletic encouragement. PAC Masters is open to experienced swimmers 19-years and older. Proof of USMS membership is required. Swimmers are assigned to lanes with others of similar abilities, and workouts are adjusted according to the experience and ability of the swimmers in each lane. Lap swim times are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays to PAC Masters members who do not want to follow the workout schedule or who simply want additional time to swim on their own. Refer to the Master Aquatic Club description for morning lap swim schedule and additional fees. Fee; $10 per visit - CHECKS ONLY - payable to Portage Public Schools. You can register for the season (April 14-June 6) through Portage Community Enrichment and pay in 2 payments of $80 each, due on or before the 10th of each month after the first payment. You can have payments set up on “Auto Pay” to avoid a $10 late fee (you will need to notify the Community Enrichment Office). If you pay in-full, in advance, for the season, you will receive a 10% discount.

Please contact the Community Enrichment office at 323-6700 for more information.

Junior Crocs-Green/BlackAges 6-12

In the Junior Crocs Developmental Program, there are two divisions; Green and Black. Much of the focus in these groups will be on learning proper technique and developing a basic level of endurance upon which to build in the future. This program will incorporate local dual/tri-meets and inter-squad, very fun and low-key swimming competitions that may happen during practice time (aka, ‘Fun Meet’), with the goal of providing both swimmers and their parents an opportunity to gain a better understanding of swimming before doing the higher level USA Swimming meets. Please contact Coach Parker @ [email protected] for a tryout. (Swimmers new to PAC need to meet with a coach to determine placement. Previous swimmers that are unsure of placement, contact Coach Parker.)

As swimmers enter this group, training will become increasingly specialized. They will begin to train in their primary strokes several times a week. They will be tested to develop paces for their specific level of training. This will allow grouping with others who share the same paces to provide a competitive training atmosphere. In general, there will be a distance group, a middle distance group, and lanes designated to specific strokes. (Swimmers new to PAC need to meet with a coach to determine placement. Previous swimmers that are unsure of placement, contact Coach Parker.)

Commitment: Senior Crocs/Green-Swimmers are expected to be at a minimum of 4 practices a week and may participate in up to as many as 7. day, night classes and activities held at PPS sites are automatically cancelled.

If that should happen, you must use your own judgment regarding attendance.

4. School/Class cancellation notices will be published through local media outlets, as well as on the District’s website at www.PortagePS.org.
