EDITORIAL |
H ard work, sweat, and a sense of accomplishment. It has been a longtime since the editors and writers of the Sullivan County Democrathave been running around a gym practicing basketball, track or
wrestling, but we can still remember the long, cold nights on a bus, travellingto Tri-Valley and the fun we had with our teammates during one of thelongest seasons of the year – winter sports.
Today, those trips have become even longer, as many of Sullivan Countyschools now travel to Orange, Ulster and Dutchess counties to fulfill theirleague and non-league schedules. But the camaraderie, sportsmanship andsweat equity which is required to build a competitive team has not changed.
Many of the coaches we interviewed for this Winter Sports Guide had thesame feeling, “Improve one game at a time.” And that is really all you can askof your athletes and coaches, continue to improve as the season goes on.Locally, there are some exceptional athletes who are making this season funto watch and some strong teams – both girls and boys – who should be vyingfor divisional and sectional championships come the end of the season.
We are delighted to see strong participation numbers in many schools andalthough one sport, downhill skiing, has gotten off to a rough start, it lookslike they will finally be able to hit the slopes this week and start competingonce again.
We encourage fans to get off the couch and spend a night cheering on yourlocal school team. We have included the schedules in this edition and willcertainly be there with you, snapping photos and reporting on the games.
Show your community pride, support our youth and cheer on… it surebeats sitting home.

Eldred boys look to overcome tough startCoach: David Binkowski2014-15 record: 5-15Key returning players: Andrew
Halloran, David Powers, Dylan Wolff,Noah Clemmons
Key losses to graduation: NickWyss
Team strengths: Speed and will. Our boys don’t quit, which is a testa-ment to their character.
Where to improve: Execution andstaying healthy. Our rebounding hasgotten much better as has our deci-sion-making as the season has pro-gressed. But we have to be smart andimprove our weaknesses and takecare of our bodies.
Season’s goals: “Our goal from Day1 has been to win the Class D StateTitle. We have the talent to go far – it’sa matter of hustle and execution.”
Key games: Every game on ourschedule.
Coach’s comment: “We started thepre-season and season with a lot ofconfidence having success over larg-er schools and competing with them, but early-season injuries thatamounted to losses against reallygood teams hampered our success. We've shown that when we'rehealthy, we can play with anyone, but the question is ‘can we stayhealthy and translate that into suc-cess in league play’? We have six sen-iors so I’m putting my trust in themthat we can continually improve overthe next few weeks and meet ourgoals.”

Coach: Ryan Jasper2014-15 record: 16-4, 4-0 league
won Section IX Class D titleKey returning players: Sheila
Burns, our leader on the floor andteam captain; Kelsey Collins, teamcaptain and standout center; seniorguard Jenna Burns.
Key losses: None to graduation;small forward Destinee Arnoldmoved out of the district.
Team strengths: “We have threestrong seniors returning this year aswell as a talented group of youngerplayers.”
Where to improve: “Getting ouryounger players familiar with our sys-tem and the varsity level of competi-tion...getting them some game timeexperience so they are able to take thereins next year when our seniors grad-uate. Also getting them used to theexpectations we have built up hereover the past few seasons.”
Season’s goals: “Our goal is to workas hard as we can this season andhopefully be in contention for leagueand sectional titles.”
Key games: Seward, O’Neill,Cooperstown, Fallsburg, Burke andColeman.
So far this season: “We played ninegames from December 2-22 whichwas pretty much a game every otherday – all against some pretty goodcompetition. While it's not ideal toplay that many games that early inthe season, our goal was to scheduleas many tough teams as we couldthis year and that's just where someof them happened to fall. We had agood break where we were finally
able to make some adjustments andhopefully we will be hitting our stridehere in the middle of the season. There are so many good, well-coached teams out there and we willdo our best to be prepared as best wecan for each game.”
Coach’s comment: “We have agreat group of kids here playing forus. Our goal is to come in each dayand be a better player at the end ofpractice than we were before. If wedo this, then we have a chance todefend our sectional championshipfrom last season.”

qualified for sectionals and wonopening round game
Key returning players: SeniorsGrant Harman, Tarik Johnson, CalebPhillips, Andrew Phillips; SophomoreRoy Penn-Cosentino.
Key losses to graduation: StephenJohnson
Team strengths: Confidence gainedfrom football success. Said Grant Har-man: “I think our big football seasonwill definitely influence our basket-ball season, and so far it has carriedover. We are looking forward to takingit a game at a time and getting backinto sectionals.”
Said Coach Slater, “We are still ateam trying to find our identity. If wemay have an advantage over someteams it could be our length if we cantake advantage of it.”
Where to improve: One negative ofthe long football season was it cutdown on basketball practice time atthe beginning of the season.
“We need to continue to get betteron defense and rebounding.”
Season’s goals: “To win the divisionand qualify for sectionals. And towork on getting better every gameand showing growth and improve-ment.”
Key games: “As always our keygames are against Fallsburg andO'Neill, which are divisional rivals.”
Coach’s comment: “After makingsectionals last year, we hope toadvance further into the sectionalfield. It was a great experience to notonly win the division but to host twosectional games – something that Lib-erty basketball hasn’t done in a longtime. But also it should be recognizedthat an equally impressive task wasthat they were also recognized with aNYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete TeamAward for having a 90.29 average.”

Key losses to graduation: DevinWilliams, Sha-Shawn Drayton, Men-tor Gashi, Rafael Ortiz, and DanteSmalls
Team strengths: “We have goodchemistry and we work hard everyday. We have quick and athleticguards in Donavan, Alberto Florez,Jaquan Poole-Porter, and TerrellGoodson. Kyle is a versatile playerwho adds some size inside and canstep out to shoot the three.”
Where to improve: “We have twosophomores and five juniors, so wedon't carry a lot of experience. Ouryoung players need to continue toimprove and adjust to varsity levelbasketball. I always think that we canbe better on defense and more effi-cient on offense – things we work oneveryday.
Season’s goals: “We want to be thehardest working team – practice andgames and never want to be out-worked. In terms of winning, ourplayers want to hang another banner;we want to win our division, whichwill give us a top seed in the section

Key games: Division games arealways important – we already havetwo division wins (beating Goshenand Cornwall). The away leagues atGoshen on Jan. 14, Cornwall on Feb11, and Port on Feb 16 will be keygames.
Coach’s comment: “I am reallypleased with our progress and we
