We must keepsportsmanship in sports
EDITORIAL |
S portsmanship – or more precisely the lack thereof – has certainly madeheadlines recently with the firing of an assistant boys basketball coachfrom Poughkeepsie for assaulting a referee. He was later arrested and
will have to settle his dispute in a court of law.We know firsthand how hard it is to referee sports, having been a longtime
volunteer soccer referee and referee coordinator for AYSO youth soccer.Everyone makes “bad calls” but there is truly no excuse for overexuberantfans, coaches or parents yelling at referees and especially no excuse forassaulting one.
Refereeing is not a perfect science – i.e. Detroit v. Dallas in last Sunday’sNFL Playoff game. Many could argue that a “bad call” cost Detroit the gamewith millions of dollars on the line. Fans have every right to feel angry at whathappened but only one thing is certain – Dallas is travelling to Green Bay thisweekend, not Detroit.
And therein lies the rub. Unfortunately youth and high school athleticsdon’t have the luxury of instant replay, coach’s challenges or television cover-age. Our games are played in small gymnasiums with referees, coaches andthe players themselves all trying to perform at their highest level.
We can only hope that sportsmanship is something which is stressed bothon and off the court. While we want our teams to win we need to rememberthat high school athletics are just that – high school athletics.
Please keep sportsmanship first when attending both home and awaygames to cheer on your teams, and be a good role model.

“With losing much of last year’steam to graduation we are still striv-ing to make sections,” he offered.“We will go through some growingpains and that’s expected with a newroster, but if we come together by theend of the year, we can make a strongpush towards the Section IX champi-onship.”
And though his team will be playinga bit of a tougher schedule this sea-son than last, Gass thinks that’s a pos-

Eldred girls eager to ‘state’their case
Having gone 8-10 last season, witha perfect 4-0 league record, theLady Yellowjackets from Eldred
were ready for sectional and state region-al competition. But there were no teamswho qualified and thus the Lady Yellow-jackets advanced to the Class D statesemifinals by virtue of two byes.
In that semifinal game, Eldred lost bigto a powerhouse Romulus of Section V.The Lady Yellowjackets and head coachRyan Jasper want nothing more than toget back to that game, though they knowthis year – due to a change in tournamentbrackets – will definitely require twogames to get to the Final Four.
“This year if we make it back, you know, there won’t be a thing anyone can say, except maybe – congratulations,” saidJasper.
With a 6-1 record so far this season, theLady Yellowjackets seemed to be headedback to postseason play.
“Our goals for this season are to com-pete for the league and sectional titles byworking hard and staying disciplined,”said Jasper. “I have a great group of hard-working kids and hopefully we can be inthe league/sectional race at the end of theseason.”
Leading the way for the Lady Yellow-
jackets are two key returnees from lastyear: junior center Kelsey Collins andjunior point guard Sheila Burns. Collinswas 2nd in the state in blocks last year, averaged 10 points per game and wasnamed the BCANY Class D Player of theYear. Burns led the team in steals andminutes last year and Jasper calls her “thehardest working kid I've ever met. She's[Burns] the heart and soul of our teamand one of the best on-the-ball defendersI've seen. She always pushes everyone todo their best.”
Sophomore Alyssa McGrail is the powerforward, trying to replace the big shoesleft by last year’s leading scorer Jess Ships.“So far she's done everything that's beenasked of her and her work ethic is phe-nomenal,” said Jasper.

BY ALLISON RUEF
The start of the season has been abit of a rocky road for Fallsburgboys basketball. Moved up to
Class B from Class C this year (basedon an increase in enrollment), theComets started the season by playingfive tough Class A schools and justone B school, Liberty, to whom theylost by two points.
Adding to their woes is the loss ofthree starters to graduation – AhmadShomo, Nick Pinder and JeremiahFannings – and the return of just onesenior, center Shane Luczyski.Carmine Berardi found himselfabruptly promoted from JV to varsitycoach just two weeks before the sea-son began leaving him scrambling topick up the pieces and figure out thedynamics of the young team. (PeteDworetsky was the longtime coachand who decided not to continuecoaching due to personal reasons).
And even though the losses havebeen mounting early on for Berardiand his Comets, he likes to remindhis players of what the great KareemAbdul Jabbar always said: “You can'twin unless you learn how to lose.”
Although the team is young, Berardifeels they are improving with everygame. “They've been playing nothingbut A teams, and in every game, theydon't give up. Their losses haven'tbeen by huge amounts – single digits– and they play hard no matter what.”
Key players this season include jun-iors Brandon Berardi, Brandon Davisand Jaidon Zeno, sophomore AmistadHackett, freshman Brandon Blakney, and senior Shane Luczyski roundingout the starters.
“They're all still learning what itmeans to play together as a team, andthey've had to learn quickly,” saysBerardi.
With just three schools in Class B,
the loss against Liberty was a particu-larly hard blow, said Berardi. “Weshould have beat them – the gamestarted at 4 p.m. instead of the usual 6p.m. to accommodate Liberty's win-ter concert, and the change reallythrew us off. I'm not making excuses,it just felt out of sync and by they timethey got their heads in the game, itwas too late.”
To make it to sectionals, Fallsburghas to win half of its league games –leaving them with just one morechance to defeat Liberty and needingat least one win against the morecompetitive James I. O'Neill.
“It could come down to our very lastgame, which is a home game againstO'Neill,” said Berardi. “By then, if theycontinue to be present in every gameand play with determination, we havea good chance to make it.”

ly at her age.” In addition to Weeks, junior point
guard Brooke Sapolsky has becomea leader on the team, and accordingto Redmond, always puts her team-mates in a good position to score.“Softball is Brooke's number onesport – she's an awesome pitcher. Towatch her grow into her basketballrole is truly a blessing.”
Center and team captain NyasiaHarris, one of four returning seniors, has played varsity for four years andbrings talent and experience to thegame. Sophomore Diavian Smith, the team’s power forward is the pri-mary rebounder and has beenresponsible for a lot of the “down-lowdirty work this year,” according to
Redmond. After taking a year off during the
2013-2014 season, Redmond isexcited to be back with this group.
“I've worked with some incrediblytalented players in the six years I'vecoached, but from a team perspec-tive, these girls are simply amazing,”he said with admiration. “They areimproving game to game and we arefurther along than I thought we'd be,but as a coach I know they've gotmore in them. Their progress isexciting, but our sights are set on thebig prize, so there's no point in get-ting comfortable where we are now.The point is to keep moving forwardand for them to have a great timedoing it.”
STORY AND PHOTO BY ALLISON RUEF
It’s fair to say that the Fallsburggirls’ basketball team is definitelyone to watch this season. So far,
they are 6-2 overall, with two of thosewins being league games, puttingthem on top of OCIAA Division IV.They also have a win over Class AGoshen.
Much has been made of freshmanDiamond Weeks, who is averagingmore than 19 points per game. Hertalent is undeniable, and accordingto coach Dan Redmond, she’s takenthe attention with a grain of salt.
“We talked about the press she'sgetting, and she is handling it well,”said Redmond. “Basketball isDiamond's main focus and she trainshard for it. She is, most importantly, ateam player – she knows when andwhere she is needed and is willing toadjust her game at any time.
“If I need her scoring, she'll step inand score – if I need her to hangback, she can adjust to that, too. Shenever thinks about herself – herfocus is the game and her team. Thatis what makes her amazing, especial-

Fifth-year Liberty girls’ basket-ball coach Beth Quatraleadmits enduring a 1-16 cam-

But heading into this season, shewas not the least bit discouraged. And so far her team is responding toher positive outlook with a surpris-ing 4-3 start.
“We have our eyes set on qualify-ing for sections but we are extremelyfocused on the smaller steps thatwill get us to that goal like winningone game at a time,” said Quatrale.
“Our goal for this season is tomaintain positive attitudes andgrow into a basketball family. Withour athleticism and heart we believethat by maintaining positive atti-tudes and mental approaches toeach and every game we can evolveas a team and overall find ourselvessuccess on the basketball court.”

“She brings a true intensity andthus far has stepped up anytime wehave needed a spark. “
Quatrale also noted that juniorCatherine Cardillo is “beginning toprove herself as a basketball playeras well. She has already shown to besuccessful with her mid-rangejumper and she is beginning tobecome more confident in a varietyof other aspects of the game aswell.”
Seniors Zytoria Reynolds andKeelin Bonilla have also contributedto Liberty’s early success with strongdefensive play.
But perhaps the real spark behindthe turnaround this year is the addi-
tion of eighth-grade sensationKelsey Morgans, a naturally-giftedballhandler who has assumed therole as floor general.
“Kelsey is just a special and rarebreed,” said Quatrale. “She busts herbutt every second that she is aroundthe game of basketball. At practiceKelsey is always willing to try newthings and is extremely coachable.
In her first four varsity games,Morgans averaged just under sevenpoints per game.
“Trust me when I say that peopleare only getting a small taste of whatKelsey Morgans is all about,” saidQuatrale. “She is a phenomenal ath-lete and her basketball IQ is begin-ning to skyrocket. She has a passionfor the game of basketball and moreimportantly an incredible workethic and the raw athletic ability tobe something special. She simplyrefuses to settle.”

Monti boys have potential for bigger and betterBY ELI RUIZ
The Monticello boys’ varsity basket-ball team under coach Chris Russohad a respectable season last yearwith a 10-9 record that earned them asectional ticket.
But, both he and his team are look-ing for a better 2015 campaign. Andthey’re off to a decent start with a 5-3record and a championship title inthe Lake Wallenpaupak Holiday tour-nament.
“This is a deep Class A field as bothleagues [OCIAA and MHAL] havesome really strong teams,” offeredRusso. “We have the talent to com-pete for a division and section title. We just have to continue to work andimprove.”
As for Russo’s players to watch:“Sha-Shawn Drayton and DevinWilliams will be key to our success aswell as the ability of our guards to getthem the ball in spots where they willbe most successful,” he said. “Wewant to compete at the highest levelevery time we step on the floor. Ourfocus is to improve with every prac-tice and game.
“We want to put ourselves in a posi-tion to win each game we play.”
And then there’s point-guard Men-tor Gasho: “Mentor is a tough playerwho does a great job handling the balland getting us into our offense,” saidRusso. “He is a courageous competi-tor who isn't afraid of the big spot andshoulders the responsibility of beingour primary point guard. He is a verygood defender and will be expected tocheck the best guard on the opposingteam.”
“I am really looking forward to thisseason,” continued Russo. “I have a

New coach leads Monticello girlsBY ELI RUIZ
First-year Monticello varsity girls’basketball coachJames Hinton is fillingsome big shoes this year after thedeparture of long-time coach and leg-end Karen Atack, who retired after lastseason.
But Hinton says he looks forward toputting his own stamp on the program.
“Replacing coach Atack who I call aHall of Famer feels good, as shecoached my two daughters yearsback,” said Hinton.” She is a legend inmy book and my plan is to maintainwhat coach Atack has built and to adda few things of my own – like putting onthe press a lot more and playing a lot ofzone defense and also some man toman.”
Having gone 8-12 last season, Hintonsays, “We just want to stay healthy thisseason and work hard on and off thecourt. We definitely want to get intosectionals and that’s our goal, but wehave to keep healthy.”
So far this season, Monticello is 2-3.Players to watch this year are seniors

FRED STABBERT IIISullivan West Head Coach Bruce
Nober is counting on big things fromhis seniors, many of whom played forthe veteran head coach last year onvarsity.
“We have a lot of seniors on thisyear’s team and I’m looking for themto improve [as the season progress-es],” Nober said. “If things break theright way, it could be an excitingyear.”
Sullivan West started the year with asizzling first game of the seasonwhere they handed Tri-Valley a four-point loss, but that game was non-league.
“Our division is really competitive,”he said. “With S.S. Seward, Chester,us and Tri-Valley. And Tuxedo is nopushover.”
The Bulldogs now stand at 0-1 in
the league and 3-2 overall.Their only league loss came at
Chester, where the Hambletoniansshot the lights out enroute to a bigwin.
“Our only bad loss is the Chesterloss,” Nober said. “I want to see themagain [at home]. I don’t think we gavethem our best effort.”
But Nober was happy with the Bull-dogs latest game, a 68-43 win overhost Eldred on Tuesday night.
“Our team played hard. We tookthree or four charges and we wereable to put pressure on the ball,” hesaid.
Nober was also impressed with theplay of seniors Ronj Padu, who netted22, and Noah Bauer, who had 12points, including three 3-pointers.
The duo has been leading the teamin scoring this year and also playingtough defense.
Sullivan West’s Noah Bauer drives to the bas-ket between two Eldred defenders enrouteto a 12 point performance.
The 2014-2015 Sullivan West Bulldogs Varsity Girls Basketball Team is, from the left: Chyenne Gaebel, Courtney Meyerer, Brianna Bryant,Bianca Burgos, Bridget Hart, Isabella Kent, Dani Brockner, Alexa Santoro, Paige Olsen, Alli Hemmer, Carly Grishaber, Heather Maxwell andMegan Brockner. The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Patrick Donovan with Assistant Coach Kurt Scheibe and Manager Justin Dorman.
STORY AND PHOTO BY FRED STABBERT III
Despite losing a solid nucleus tograduation, fifth-year HeadCoach Patrick Donovan is
happy with the progress of this year’steam.
“We are ahead of schedule,” he said.“Our girls are used to what we aredoing and it has been an easier tran-sition from jayvee to varsity.”
Donovan credits the easier transi-tion to two things: ten of his playersattending Colgate summer basketballcamp and bringing up several jayveeplayers last year at the end of the sea-son to give them experience at thehigher level of competition.
Led by co-captains Carly Grishaberand Bella Kent, the team already haspicked up two wins, almost matchinglast year’s season total.
“Varsity is more physical with afaster pace of play,” Donovan said.“We have great kids and great num-bers [of players].”
Another factor helping varsity girlsbasketball at Sullivan West is thestrong support Donovan is gettingfrom coaches at all levels.
“I’m reaping the benefits of youthbasketball, which was recently madelarger and includes more instruc-tion,” he said. “We also have greatmodified coaches in Diana Hahn andRicky Ellison, who is doing 8thgrade.”
Donovan also credited the jayveeprogram with doing a good job of get-ting his players ready for varsity.

BY ALLISON RUEFA 2003 grad, first-year Tri-Valley var-
sity boys’ basketball coach KyleHumphrey is all too familiar with thecourt the Bears call home. He was, after all, one of Tri-Valley's all-timestandout players, scoring 1,317 pointsin his career.
But Humphrey doesn't focus on hisglory days. Instead, he is intent onbuilding a strong, confident teamready to make it to sectionals thisyear. So far, the Bears are 3-2, with oneof those losses being a four-pointnailbiter to Sullivan West.
“Our guys were nervous and made'nervous' mistakes like poor shotselection and too many turnovers,”said Humphrey of the loss. “Thatnervousness carried over to their sec-ond game against Walton.”
By their third game against Class BEllenville, the Bears posted a 66-57
victory.“That win helped build their confi-
dence,” said Humphrey. “Theyseemed to find their groove.”
A substantial win over Liberty in itshome opener on Dec. 15 (74-55) fol-lowed by a league win over Tuxedohas the Bears headed in the rightdirection.
“I've had 10 guys start between ourtwo home games and I plan on start-ing all 15 by season's end,” saidHumphrey. “If we stay healthy in thesecond half of the season, I think we'llbe a dangerous team.”
Humphrey is looking for moreoffensive structure and ball move-ment in future games.
Tri-Valley is led by seniors ZachNilsen, Jarred James and Dion Lynch.Strong support comes from juniorsThomas Decker, Rob Worden, ShaneRennison and Chris Mosher, whomake up an athletic and talentedguard group.
Missing from last year are AlexBrown, whose height and agility will
be missed and Jesus Lozada, whobrought a tremendous amount ofspirit and energy.
“This is a much quieter team with-out Jesus,” said Humphrey. “He andAlex Brown would have rounded outthe team nicely, but I expect theenthusiasm and athleticism to buildfor this team. We're just getting start-ed – it's just a matter of time.”

T-V girls on a missionBY ALLISON RUEF
The Tri-Valley girls’ basketballteam has a mission: defend lastyear's Section IX Class C title.
After four games this season – threenon-league losses against one leaguewin – the mission has become moredifficult but still possible.
It would be unreasonable not tomention last year's championshipteam, who started the season with 18consecutive wins, ascended to No. 4 inthe state Class C rankings and claimedthe sectional title.
For Coach Jason Closs, last year wasspecial, but he's not looking at thisyear’s team through that prism.
“Last year, we had an amazing runwith a special group of girls, but thisyear, we also have a group of tremen-dous players,” he says.
Key losses to graduation includeguards Kaitlynn Greffrath andSabrina Smith, whose offense andscoring abilities will be missed as wellas Ashley Exner and Colleen Jones, scrappy rebounders whose assertive
defense rounded out last year'sstarters.
Standouts this year include seniorsCaroline Martin, last year's third lead-ing scorer and Sarah Dertinger, a soliddefender. Junior Kayla Butler, SandraAlemany, a sophomore and foreignexchange student from Spain, AshleyJohnson, who was out last season dueto a soccer-related knee injury andMorgan Shamro, a freshman who wasbrought up to varsity last year, all addbreadth and dimension to this year'slineup.
Closs admits that the team is still in aperiod of adjustment, still finding itsplace as a team on the court andagainst their opponents.
“Our returning players are adjustingto new roles on the team and newstarting positions,” he explains. “Theyare all learning to trust each other andwork together, and as that trust builds, they are going to get better. This sea-son won't be an easy one, and they willhave to work for every game, but theydefinitely have the passion and the
desire.”Defensively, Closs feels the team is
where it should be, however findingways to score, finishing shot opportu-nities and better ball movement areareas where the Lady Bears need totighten-up their game.
“Until we click and mesh, we are
going to have times where we lookgood and times where we need totweak how we play,” said Closs. “If wecan stay out of foul trouble – be aggres-sive but not reckless – play a fast-paced, athletic game and most of all, play as a team, I think we're going tohave a great season.”
