One might think losinga senior who ran your of-fense would be a deathknell to a state tourna-ment team.

Well, it’s not.St. Pat’s returns all but

one player from a statetournament team a yearago. Candice Shelton ledthe Lady Irish offense aseason ago, handling theball, making decisions andhelping the Lady Irish tothe State Basketball Tour-nament.

This season Shelton isgone, but the Lady Irish re-turn everyone else fromthat squad and added atransfer from Maxwell. St.Pat’s is hungry for anotherstate tournament run, andthey have the athletes tomake it happen.

Four starters — ShelbyAllberry, Mandy O’Malley,Sam Byrn and BrittanyLawrence — along with re-turners Anna O’Malley,Erin Nozicka, Toni Caudil-lo, Bree Saner, Kari Slat-tery, Natalie Mackley andCharLeigh Kadlecek, means the Lady Irish aredeep and experienced.

Oh, and Brook Boucheris playing for the LadyIrish, moving fromMaxwell.

“Not too much has

changed,” Lady Irish headcoach Nathan Stienikesaid. “We don’t have a truepoint guard, but we didn’tlast season.

“Both the O’Malley girlscan handle the ball.Boucher can handle theball and Sam can handlethe ball and run the of-fense.”

The O’Malley girls areboth small, quick guards.Boucher and Byrn canplay guard or forward, while Allberry andLawrence provide the postplay. Allberry can alsoplay outside.

While the Lady Irishhave experience, size, speed and scoring ability,Stienike likes his team’stoughness.

“That’s something we’velearned is that we havetoughness,” the coachsaid. “We know there willbe some very physicalgames and we’re ready forthat.

“We have what we wantto do, but we can adjustand play how we need to.”

Stienike said his teamhas plenty of leaders aswell.

“Allberry is a goodleader. She’s not a vocalleader, but she leads by ex-ample,” the coach said.“Sam might be the key forus this year. She doeswhatever we need,

whether it’s handle theball, go rebound, break thepress or play defense onthe opposing team’s bestplayer.”

One team already on theLady Irish radar is Her-shey. The Lady Panthers, who also went to the statetournament a year ago, will be in Class C2 this sea-son and will be in the samesub-district as the LadyIrish.

“They will be tough, nodoubt,” Stienike said ofHershey.

“It’s always fun for bothteams and both communi-ties when we get togetherfor a game.

“With both of ranked inthe Top 10 before the sea-son starts, I think that’stremendous for bothschools, the SPVA Confer-ence and western Nebras-ka.

“If we both play as we’recapable, we will help eachother out.”

Another tough SPVA op-ponent will be Sutherland.

“If you can play well inthe SPVA Conference, youwill be all right,” Stienikesaid. “It’s such a toughconference that it forcesyou to improve all thetime.

“We know what wewant. We’ve set our goalsfor the season. It’s time toplay.”

St. Pat’s wrestling coach Kevin Woodhas seen a lot in his 25 years of coach-ing. While this season’s roster is differ-ent, it also has its advantages.

The Irish have 14 wrestlers on thevarsity roster and all are eligible fortwo weight classes, which gives theteam flexibility in dual matches.

What’s a little different this season isthat St. Pat’s is open at four weightclasses, four middle weight classes.

“It’s a little different, having lowerweight classes and heavier weight class-es and being open in the middle,” Woodsaid. “It is what it is, and we’ll deal withit as the season goes.”

Trey Dodson and Nathan Chrismanreturn at 106 and 113 pounds. From 120to 152 the Irish have Adam Pasquinellyat 132 and Matthew Ferguson, a fresh-man, at 138. Pasquinelly was 40-7 a yearago and placed fifth in the state tourna-ment. Other state qualifiers for theIrish include Dodson, Joel Melton at 170pounds, Henry Aufdenkamp at 182pounds and Bruan Shurigar at 285pounds.

“We’ve got some experience,” Woodsaid. “If some of our younger guyscome on, we’ll have a tough teamagain.”

Wood uses the early part of the sea-son to work on technique.

“It doesn’t matter how good of shapeyou are in if you don’t know whatyou’re doing,” the coach said. “Whilewe always work on conditioning, it’s

important for us to work on techniqueearly in the season.”

Two wrestlers are returning 100 per-cent after being hurt a season ago. Pe-dro Martinez, the Irish 195-pounder,was hurt during the football season lastyear and missed a large portion of thewrestling season.

Shurigar broke his arm in the Dis-trict final, ending his season. Both areat 100 percent for the start of this sea-son.

The Irish went 3-2 in the SouthwestDual Tournament to open the seasonand then won the Bronco Invite inMullen.

“We placed nine of 11 guys we took,”Wood said. “Our focus is to earn experi-ence early in the season.”

Wood said his open varsity spotshaven’t hurt the team thus far.

“While we have the open spots, wehave wrestlers at the light weights andthe heavy weights, and some teams maynot have both,” Wood said. “It providesus with a chance to match up as weneed to.”

The Irish are the defending SPVAConference champions and were sec-ond in District D-4 last year. This yearthe Irish move up to Class C inwrestling.

“As far as the SPVA, it’s a lot of fun,”Wood said. “We’ve got some really goodteams in the conference and it’s a funtournament.

“Everything else, well, it is what it is.We’ll move forward and do the best wecan, like we always do.”

A year ago, the St. Pat’s boys basket-ball team advanced to the state tourna-ment. Now, the Irish want to go back.

While the Irish lost two seniors fromthat state team, the returning playershave plenty of firepower coming backto lead St. Pat’s.

Two key players for the Irish this sea-son are seniors Sean Keenan andJoseph Clinch. Keenan is a guard whileClinch is a post player for St. Pat’s.

“Joe is pretty physical,” said Irishhead coach Bill O’Malley. “He’s steadyand reliable inside and he’s a good bas-ketball player.

“Sean is also a good basketball player. He’s got great sight on the court andjust knows what needs to be done. Heputs the ball where it needs to be.”

While Keenan and Clinch may bekeys for the Irish, they are by no meansthe only ball players O’Malley can relyon. Also returning this season are MarkMayfield, Joseph O’Malley, BrandonNiesen, Alex Harms and MatthewBuhrman. All of them have experiencefrom a season ago.

“We have a lot of guys who will dowhatever needs to be done to win a bas-

ketball game,” O’Malley said. “It’s astrength of this team.

“These players have an understand-ing of what we want and what needs tobe done and they will go and do it.”

The Irish will be one of the favoritesin the SPVA Conference and O’Malleybelieves the conference is a good test forhis team.

“This conference is always tough,”the coach said. “We have a lot of teamswho, on any given night, can knock youoff.

“You learn in a hurry not to overlookanyone.”

O’Malley listed Perkins County as atough conference opponent.

“Perkins County, Chase County, Her-shey,” the coach said. “They can all winand they may start slow, but I’d bet theyare there at the end of the season.”

As for his vision of the Irish thisyear?

“We have a great opportunity and Ithink the guys see that and believe init,” O’Malley said. “We know where wewant to, how we need to improve to getthere and where we want the season toend.

“It’s a great opportunity and we’reready for it.”

Maxwell may be one of themost experienced Class Dwrestling teams in the state. TheWildcats return 10 starters, fivestate qualifiers and have defi-nite goals set for the season.

“We want to make the StateDual Tournament,” said headcoach Ryan Jones of the inaugu-ral State Dual Tournament to beheld in Kearney. “We know tomake it there, we need to be agood dual team as well as a goodtournament team.”

The Wildcats have 33wrestlers out this season andwill fill all 14 weight classes. Re-turning state qualifiers forMaxwell are Drew Riggs at 132pounds, Ethan Lunkwitz at 138pounds, Jaylon Sturdivant at 145pounds, Jacob Whisenhunt at152 pounds and Dylan Gage at170 pounds.

Riggs is a three-time statemedalist, having finished third, fifth and third in the last threestate tournaments.

“Riggs is a threat,” Jones said.“He has to get a little better onhis feet, but he’s working on it.He wrestles in a tough weightclass, but he’s as good as anyonein the state.

“He needs to believe in him-self. Sometimes he over-analyzesthings instead of just going outthere and letting his talent takeover. He has it in him to be a

state champion.”Sturdivant, a sophomore,

qualified for state a year ago de-spite battling mono for most ofthe season.

Gage suffered an overtimeloss in the state tournament, aloss which kept him from plac-ing.

The number of wrestlers outfor Maxwell makes things betterin practice.

“We’ve got a good wrestlingroom,” Jones said.

”The guys are all workinghard and they are pulling foreach other during tournamentsand duals already, which is aplus.”

The Wildcats opened the yeargoing 4-1 in the Southwest DualsTournament and followed thatup with a championship in theElwood Invitational. In thattournament, Maxwell placed 12wrestlers, including three cham-pions.

Jones knows reaching theDual State Tournament willmean winning at both duals andtournaments.

“Duals are a chess match,”Jones said. “Winning can be assimple as a wrestler not gettingturned over on his back duringhis match.

“We have some flexibility withour roster, so we should be ableto match up well with anyone.”

Next Thursday, Maxwell hostsa dual with with Ralston Valley,Colo., and will host a quadran-

gular on Jan. 10.“We will wrestle at home for

the first time in three years,”

Jones said. “Also, we have atougher schedule this year, which should make us better by

the end of the year when theDistrict Tournament comesaround.”

Wildcats excited for wrestling seasonMaxwell has full team, plenty of flexibility as it eyes State Dual Tournament berth

Lack of experience anddepth will be a concern forthe Maxwell Tigers asthey begin the 2012-13 boysbasketball season. Buthead coach Travis Kleinplans to turn that into astrength by midseason.

“For the most part theboys have been pushingpretty hard to improveand get better,” Klein said.“Daily we talk about giv-ing more than the day be-fore to improve.

“I think as the seasonplays on and we getthrough a few games theywill have a better under-standing of the effort theyneed to give in practice toprepare better for games.”

Key to the Tigers devel-opment will come fromseniors Brandon Groseth

and Brandon Fletcher.“Both of them are great

kids,” said Klein. “Theyhave been contributorssince they were sopho-mores.

“Both have been greatleaders vocally and by ex-ample this season showingthe younger kids theropes. Having these two onthe court will be settlingfor me and for our youngkids.

“Brandon Fletcher willbe our quarterback on thecourt and he will be ex-pected to get us in theright spots offensively anddefensively.

“I think he is set to havea really good year this sea-son.

“Brandon Groseth is an-other returning starter forus. I can tell in these firstfew weeks of practice hehas become more comfort-

able on the floor and is do-ing a lot of good things onthe court.

“He is a little undersizedat 6-feet to play inside, buthe makes up for it withquickness and is great atusing his body to gain po-sition.”

Returning non-starterletterwinners for theTigers, include seniorsJosh Grace and BradyRosenblad; juniors ZacGregg and Bryson Kellerand sophomore JeremiahKeith.

Heading into the open-ing weekend, Klein fig-ured to learn a lot abouthis ball club.

“We still have kids fight-ing for minutes,” Kleinsaid. “It will be interestingto see who rises to thechallenges that are ahead. We have made strides inpractice as we learn to

compete and play thegame.”

Klein said his team willneed to adjust their play toa very formidable sched-ule.

“Offensively we willtake what is given to us,”Klein said. “For us to besuccessful and competi-tive we need to defend andrebound the ball, limitteams to one shot a posses-sion, along with crashingthe boards offensivelylooking for 2nd chance op-portunities.

“Again we have a verychallenging schedule andwe will have to play at ahigh level to be competi-tive and win games. Wewill be playing someyoung kids this year andthey are going to have togrow up fast and play at ahigh level.”

Everything new for Lady WildcatsNew coaches, new players taking on challenge for MaxwellBy MARK [email protected]

With no starters andonly two letterwinners re-turning from the 2011-12Maxwell girls’ basketballsquad, the Lady Wildcatswill need to rely on youthto carry the load for the

working on the fundamen-tals of the game.

“The girls are doingvery well,” Armour said.“They are improvingevery day.”

When most coaches lookat youth as a weakness,Armour takes a differentangle.

“Youth keeps the teamexcited,” the coach said.“And very energetic.”

The two returning let-terwinners for the LadyWildcats this season are 5-foot, 5-inch junior AnnaCrane, and 5-6 sophomoreTracy Blake.

“They bring toughness

and resilience to the wholeteam,” Armour said.

Although the Lady Wild-cats have begun the sea-son 0-3, Armour is opti-mistic.

“The girls have im-proved in every aspect ofthe game — every game,”said Armour.

GOOD LUCK AREA TEAMS

By MARK [email protected]

Jason Gunderson madethe trip down the old Lin-coln Highway fromMaxwell to Sutherland forthe 2012-13 basketball sea-son. Trading in his blackand orange, Gundersonchanged his wardrobe tothe red and white of theLady Sailors. Although hewill be coaching a differ-ent team, the expectationsremain the same.

“Off and on the court Iexpect my players to berole models for theschool,” Gunderson said.“In a smaller school sys-tem the younger studentshave an opportunity to seethe players everyday. Be-cause of this they need tobe aware of their sur-roundings at all times andbe a positive influence forthe younger students.

“On the court I expectthe girls to play with ahigh level of energy, al-ways hustling and work-ing hard. A lot of the goalsthis year are based to-wards defense.”

With a new coach direct-ing a new team, Gunder-son said practices havebeen busy, as a lot of newthings have been added.

“The girls have beenworking hard,” the coachsaid. “A lot of them havebeen staying after practiceworking on fundamentals.

“They have high expec-tations for themselves aswell as the team. We have alarge number of girls out[27]. It took a couple ofdays for the younger play-ers to realize what the ex-pectations were in prac-tice. Everyone is fitting inand working hard.”

Four starters return forthe Lady Sailors. Seniorshooting guard Joli Hop-ping returns as a four-yearstarter and a 5.6 points pergame average.

“From what I have seenso far from Joli — is she isa leader,” said Gunderson.“She has a positive atti-tude and is demanding ofherself and players feedoff of that. She hasworked on her shootingand ball handling.”

Junior’s Sam Staggs andJalyne Schuster also start-ed a season ago. Staggs av-eraged seven points agame with 3.9 rebounds asa two-year starter. Schus-ter, also a two-year starter, was the Lady Sailors lead-ing scorer at 11.7 points agame. Kaley Stokey, the fi-nal starting returnee aver-aged five points a gamefrom the point position.

“Sam is a playmaker, she has the ability to cre-ate her own shot plus has agood outside shot,” Gun-derson said of Staggs.“She will have to adjustthis year and be able toplay the 4 position.

“Jalyne is the otherplaymaker on the team.Just like Sam she can cre-ate her own shot andshoot.

“She is also a good pass-er and is working hard ondefense to become a com-plete basketball player byimproving her defense.

“Kaley is a young pointguard with a lot of energy. She always has a smile onher face and is a good ballhandler and will have torun the team this year.”

Looking to fill the finalstarting position will besenior Sam Kennedy.Kennedy is coming off a

great volleyball seasonand Gunderson has vi-sions of her being a forcein the post.

“[Kennedy] is workinghard to improve her funda-mentals,” Gunderson said.“Sam plays good defensein the post and is a good re-bounder.”

Gunderson will look forhelp off the bench from apair of seniors. TawnieMcConnell, injured thepast two years is back tohelp at the guard position.Kristen Nelson, a utilityplayer that helped off thebench last year, will beable to play several posi-tions.

Gunderson said, “BothTawnie and Kristen couldstart if needed.”

Look for the LadySailors to play an up-tem-po style of basketball witha variety of different de-fenses to keep the game ata pace of their liking. Gun-derson knows with theirdifficult schedule, theLady Sailors will need tobring their “A-game”every night.

“I believe that ourschedule is tougher thisyear than it was last year,”said Gunderson. “TheSPVA is going to be tough[nothing new there].

“We open up with foursolid class C1 and C2teams. We will be able tosee right way what needswork.

“We play a primarilyclass C schedule. I believeGothenburg is going to bea surprise team this yearand Ogallala has a newcoach that knows how towin in Chris Mestl. We aregoing to have to be focusedat all times.”

A familiar challenge faces the Suther-land boys’ basketball program as the2012-13 basketball season approaches. The Sailors will have a varsity rosterheaded up by only two seniors, four jun-iors and six freshmen. Head coach DanDyer will lean on his upperclassmen forsome early direction.

“Our young players are going to needto adjust to the speed and physicality ofthe high school game early on to help usbe competitive,” said Dyer. “We willrely heavily on our upperclassman ear-ly in the season while our younger play-ers acclimate themselves to varsity bas-ketball.”

With a small number of athletes andvery little varsity experience, Dyer saidit will be important to look at a lot offaces early.

“We have 12 players on the team,”Dyer said. The rotation may be a littlebit fluid early on until we see who stepsup and forms a solid rotation.

“We are a very young te4am that re-turns very little varsity experience. Wewill have to grow as a team right awaywith a tough schedule.”

Dyer has two returning letter win-ners off the 2011-12 club, in Tyler Fear

and Calvin Carsten that ended the sea-son with a 10-13 record. Both juniors,Fear is a 6-foot guard while Carsten isthe top returning post player at 6-5.

“Tyler is a good perimeter scorer andhas done a good job working on his abil-ity to finish around the basket,” Dyersaid. “Calvin will be a good defenderwith his length and has a nice toucharound the rim. We will need them toprovide quality leadership throughoutthe season for us to improve towardssub-districts.”

Junior Nathan Maxcy, and freshmenBrett Good and Kadin Copeland alsowill be counted on to contribute to theSailors cause.

“Good is becoming a steady perime-ter shooter and provides us with someathleticism as a 9th grader,” said Dyer.“Maxcy is an excellent ball defenderwho works hard every possession.Copeland can knock down the perime-ter shot if he gets into a good rhythm.”

Dyer said the Sailors will look to runif the opportunity presents itself.

“We will be primarily a controlled of-fense that will attack in transitionwhen we have numbers,” the coachsaid.

“We like to play defense in the halfcourt trying to force our opponents totake contested perimeter shots.”

It’s a mixed bag for Sutherland on thewrestling mats this season.

Coach Ryan Mraz returns four statequalifiers, but also has five freshmen onthe team.

“That’s the way it is,” Mraz said. “Wehave some tough kids returning and wehave some inexperienced wrestlers whoare going to have to improve as the sea-son progresses.”

The returning state qualifiers areCollin Fleecs at 120 pounds, ChandleTyan at 126 pounds, Colt Corbin at 132pounds and Greg McKain at 145pounds. McKain finished fifth last sea-son at the state tournament.

The Sailors have 13 wrestlers on theroster this season.

“Right now. we’re trying to whip

them into shape,” Mraz said. “We haveto get the kids down to the weights andkeep working.

“Everyone is working hard. We’reputting the younger guys in with someexperienced ones to improve the learn-ing curve as fast as we can.”

The Sailors opened the season with a3-2 dual record in the Southwest DualsTournament and then finished secondat the Bronco Invitational in Mullen.

“We did well,” Mraz said. “We lostsome we shouldn’t have lost, but someof the younger guys placed, whichhelped.

“We were third in that tournamentlast year, so it was nice to improve thisyear.”

Sutherland will host the annualSutherland Invite on Dec. 15 and willalso host a Class D District Tournamentat the end of the season.

Sutherland’s Sam Kennedy looks to pass during the Lady Sailors District Final againstSandhills/Thedford last season. Kennedy joins a large group of returning Lady Sailorswho are seeking a return to the state tournament.

Sometimes, help comesfrom out of the blue.

North Platte Communi-ty College women’s headcoach Richard Thurin wasat home last summerwhen he received a call.

“It was from PaigeHasty’s mother,” Thurinsaid. “She explained Paigewas going to be attendingNPCC and asked if I want-ed to talk with her daugh-ter.

“I said yes and we met. Isigned her to play thatday.”

Hasty played highschool basketball at Hol-drege and went on to signto play with Doane afterhigh school.

“She played four gamesthere,” Thurin said. “She

hurt her knee and theyshut her down.

“Her sister was going toschool here and her grand-parents live in Elsie, soshe decided she wanted tocome to school at NorthPlatte.”

No one is sure if Hastyintended to play basket-ball before her mothercontacted Thurin. Now,everyone connected withthe Lady Knights is gladshe did.

“Paige is a good basket-ball player and a goodleader,” Thurin said. “Shecan score and was ourleading scorer throughmuch of the early season.

“But she’s also a smartbasketball player. She canpass out of the high postand makes sure people arein the right positions.”

While Hasty is a sopho-

more, the Lady Knightsare hoping she will get an-other year of eligibility atNPCC.

“She qualifies for a redshirt,” Thurin said. “Wejust have to have Doanesubmit the paperwork be-fore we do.”

Thurin said Hasty’stime with Doane — andplaying for Holdrege, oneof the area’s better prepprograms — allowed herto come in and be a leaderfrom the start.

“We needed that,” thecoach said. “We didn’t re-turn anyone from lastyear’s team, so we neededsomeone who was going tocome in and be that leaderfor us.”

The Lady Knights are 6-5 on the season and willplay at Southeast and Cen-tral today and Sunday.

The most important games for theNorth Platte Community College men’sbasketball team are coming up.

The Knights are 7-2 on the season andwill play at Southeast today, at Centralon Sunday and host Northwest KansasTech on Dec. 15.

“These games are very important,”said NPCC head coach Kevin O’Connor.“I thought we were right where weneeded to be when we beat Casper atNortheastern, but the next night welost to Air Force Prep.

“That was the toughest loss of theseason. We didn’t have any energy, anyfocus. We were flat just 24 hours afterthe biggest win of the season.”

O’Connor knows he has one of thetoughest jobs in coaching. The Knightshead coach takes freshmen and sopho-mores for two years and tries to moldthem into players, a team and responsi-ble men.

“It’s hard,” O’Connor admitted. “It’shard to create chemistry in a team.

“They get here, meet one another andthen have to play together. As the teampractices, it’s important that they pulltogether, rally around one another, playhard, be competitive, but be together.

“It doesn’t always happen.”Three years ago, after the Knights

made the national tournament, O’Con-nor brought together a team that wasfilled with talent. However, the teamnever developed chemistry and fellapart.

“That was so disappointing,” O’Con-nor said. “This team, it has developedsome chemistry. They are coming to-gether, but they still have much tolearn.

“It’s why they lost one day after get-ting their biggest win. They have tolearn how to sustain that energy on theback end of back-to-back days.

“It should come. If we finish the pre-holiday break the way we should, I’ll belooking forward to the second half ofthe season. This team can get better, can grow. I’m anxious to see where weend up, but I believe it will be close towhere we want it to be.”

Ben Wilson of NPCC goes up strong against Northeastern Junior College earlierthis season. Wilson, a sophomore, has been key in helping the Knights build chem-istry as they play this season.

Things are new for the Hershey Pan-thers.

Head coach Dustin Jorgenson has awhole new crew playing basketball forhim this season.

“We lost seven seniors and all fivestarters,” Jorgenson said. “With somany new faces on the court, we’re tak-ing things one day at a time, just tryingto get better each day and be where wewant to be by the end of the season.”

Dylan Johnson and Josh Connell arethe two most experienced Panthers re-turning for this season.

“We’ve got a lot of kids,” Jorgensonsaid. “We can be a pretty physical teamand we can play inside.

“With a lot of depth, we can playquite a few. It all comes down to how theseason goes, how the kids grow, how weimprove and where we are at come sub-district time.”

Jorgenson looks at St. Pat’s, Chase

County and Perkins County as toughSPVA teams.

“St. Pat’s is loaded again,” Jorgensonsaid. “Chase County has most of theirteam back and Perkins County, whenthey get healthy, will be a very toughteam.

“This conference is always loaded. Onany night one of the conference teamscan beat the other. It’s always a toughconference tournament and a toughconference.”

Hershey will see more of St. Pat’sthan it used to. The Panthers havedropped into Class C2 this season andwill be in the same sub-district as theIrish.

“It doesn’t matter where we’re at,”Jorgenson said. “We have to worryabout ourselves first. We have so muchwe need to improve on before we worrytoo much about other teams.

“We will keep working hard, keep im-proving and work being as good as wecan be by the time the postseason rollsaround.”

The Hershey Lady Pan-thers got a taste of theState Basketball Tourna-ment last year. Now, theywant to return.

Hershey is returningmost of their roster from ayear ago and hopes thatexperience will carrythem into another statetournament run.

“We’re excited about theseason,” said Hersheyhead coach JeremyThomas. “We have a lot ofdepth and a lot of return-ing players.”

The Lady Panthers re-turn five starters from ayear ago. Back are MaddieSeamann, Maegan Hiatt,Daynlee Miller, TaylerBaker and Brook Freder-ick.

Frederick returns aftermissing all but one gamelast year after suffering an

injury. She has been calleda tenacious defender byThomas and other areacoaches.

Other returning playersfor Hershey are JennaYoung, Brooke Munsen,Bobbi Brannon, MariahDaMaude and AlieshaDethlefs.

Two newcomers whomay help this season areRyce Taylor and freshmanTaylor Mustian.

Hershey is loaded withquick, smaller players, which helps as they play afull-court pressing de-fense.

“That’s our style,” saidThomas. “We like to playpressure defense and weget after it all game long.”

One of the biggest dif-ferences for the Lady Pan-thers is the move to ClassC2 this season.

That puts them in thesame sub-district as arch-rival St. Pat’s.

Thomas hopes there is ascenario where both teamscan advance in postsea-son.

“We have a tough sched-ule,” Thomas said. “If wetake care of business andSt. Pat’s does as well, which you know they will, maybe what happened involleyball where bothteams made state, can hap-pen again in basketball.”

Thomas knows he willsee the Lady Irish manytimes this year, starting to-day at home.

“We will play them athome and at their place,”Thomas said. “Then thereis the SPVA ConferenceTournament and in thesub-district tournament.

“We want to play wellagainst everyone, but ifwe can hold our ownagainst St. Pat’s, well, wewill be right where wewant to be.”

There’s a big difference between Ari-zona and Nebraska. Just ask Eric Sokol, the new head coach for the HersheyPanthers wrestling team.

Sokol, who also helps coach football, moved to the area over the summer.

“One of the biggest differences is inthe numbers,” Sokol said. “In Arizona,we’d have 45 to 50 kids out for wrestling.

“Here I have 12. The hardest thing isgetting them close enough in weight topractice.”

While the numbers may be smaller,Sokol has enjoyed working with Her-shey students.

“The kids are tough,” the coach said.“We have some good athletes with sometalent. Nebraska does a good job ofmatching you up with equal opponents,so we’re not out of our league.

“One of the disadvantages I have, is Ididn’t spend time with them over thesummer, so they’re spread out a littlebit on where they are on technique.

“We have to spend time refining

skills.”Despite the setback, the low numbers

allow the Panthers coaching staff towork with the wrestlers more individu-ally.

“It’s great for a coaching aspect,”Sokol said. “Each of the kids has differ-ent skills and likes and dislikes.

“The smaller numbers allow me toget to know the kids better, knowwhether they like takedowns or to wres-tle defensively. These are things thatwould take a while to figure out in alarger setting.”

With varying degrees of experienceon the varsity, Sokol said he hasn’t set ateam goal.

“My approach is to work with each ofthese guys individually,” he said. “Weneed to do what we can to get thesewrestlers to the state tournament.

“We don’t have a lot of numbers, butwe have tons of talent and toughness.Wrestling and football both can bemeasured in talent and toughness. Ourwrestlers have both, and as coaches, weneed to help them use both to their abil-ity and make the state tournament.”Hershey’s Daynlee Miller goes up for a shot against Minden during last year’s State

Basketball Tournament. Miller returns with a host of Lady Panthers and the team will beseeking a second straight trip to state.

David Jacobs begins hissecond year at the helm ofthe Brady Eagles basket-ball program during the2012-13 season. He led theEagles to a 19-4 record aseason ago — falling justshort of a trip to state atLincoln. Jacobs said histeam is still flying highfrom the successful sea-son.

“After going 19-4 ourconfidence level is highand the effort put forth byour kids in the preseasonhas been great,” Jacobs

said. “So I think that’sbeen a positive for us.

“Being my second yearhas helped a lot becausethe kids know what to ex-pect and we have been ableto focus a little more onsome details.”

The Eagles return onlytwo starters in Zach Mannand Bryley Roper.

Both will be counted onheavily.

“Zach and Bryley bothplayed a lot minutes lastyear and are very experi-enced ball players,” saidJacobs. “They both bringgreat leadership abilityand are good teammates.

“Zach was our secondleading scorer last yearand he has good speed andinstincts, and Bryley is areally good ball handlerand is very quick. Heneeds to get a little moreaggressive this year anddo a little more scoring forus.”

Senior Michael Neimanwill also be called upon tohelp the Eagles.

“Michael is another sen-ior letter winner who hasbeen showing good leader-ship and working hard inpractice,” Jacobs said.

A grueling scheduleawaits the Eagles in their

preparation for the sea-son.

“We start off withWauneta-Palisade andthey are always a tough, well coached team,” saidJacobs. It really doesn’tget any easier as we moveto our Christmas break.

“We have Paxton, CodyKilgore, Hitchcock Coun-ty, Loomis, and then SouthLoup, SMC and Maxwellin the Maxwell BoosterClub Tournament.

“So I think we will findplenty of challenges, andknow a lot more aboutourselves going intoChristmas break.”

Brady Lady Eagles basketballcoach Lance Arterburn must not beable to relate to Old Mother Hub-bard — because when he goes to hiscupboard — all is OK. A year afterBrady posted a 20-2 record, losing asemifinal sub-district match-up to22-2 Ansley, Arterburn returns 10girls with varsity experience andalso depth at the post position.

“I think that will allow us to playmore relaxed and handle the tightersituations a little better,” Arterburnsaid. “We will substitute more thisyear and should be able to put morepressure on teams with our depth.”

The Lady Eagles return three

starters in Brittney Christopherson,Dakota Terry and transfer studentMadison Elliott from Maxwell.

“Madison and Dakota are almostidentical with what they do for us,”said Arterburn. “Both are veryphysical down low.

“They are very smart and workextremely hard at the post. Theymight not be the biggest, but theyhandle pressure very well. Both cantake care of business.

“We will rely on Brittney this yearto put points up from the outside forus.”

Those three and returning letter-winners Valerie Most, Alexis Mann,Molly Hannon, Sydney Widick,Carissa Rayburn, Josie Palmer andAutumn Hild will carry the bulk of

the load for the Lady Eagles.“Those three seniors work very

hard,” Arterburn said. “The seniorsand the bunch of juniors have a veryhard work ethic. They know whatwe need to do.

“It is the juniors goal, as with therest of the team, to make sure ourseniors go out and make our goal [ofgoing to state].”

Arterburn said his team will stilltry to push the ball up the floor, butthis year under control.

“We need to be smart when not topush,” said the coach. “In the pastwe only had one gear. We need to re-alize when to slow down to holddown on the turnovers. We want toplay fast — just a smarter fast.”

Prep athletes use summer to get better. Wallacehopes it has done enough to turn things around thisseason.

“We played about 30 games over the summer,” saidWallace boys basketball coach Joe Hesse. “We believeit has made us better.”

The Wildcats went 8-12 last season and, accordingto Hesse, lost every way possible.

“We lost five or six games by less than four points,”the coach said.”We lost every way there is.

“We got back our top seven players, so hopefully, welearned last year what it takes to win.”

All five starters, Landon Swedberg, Taylor Doell,Josh Grauerholz, John Marquart and Lane Scott, re-turn. Also returning are Jose Arvizo and Shane An-ders.

“We have to improve our shooting,” Hessesaid.”We play pretty good defense, but we aren’t go-ing to win too many games 1-0.

“Offensively, we are quick. Teams can’t play managainst us or we’ll do well.”

Hesse calls Swedberg the team’s best player.“He can do it all,” Hesse said. “He scores, re-

bounds, handles the ball. He’s our best player.”Although the Wildcats aren’t real tall — Grauer-

holz is the team’s tallest player at 6-1 — they havestarted the season 2-0 and feel they are going to dowell this season.

“We won four or five games in a row at the end ofthe season last year,” Hesse said. “We got some confi-dence and grew with our play over the summer.

“We are going to be tough this season and hopeful-ly improve more as the season goes on.”

A new coach has taken over for the Lady Wildcatsof Wallace, but he’s not new to a basketball court.

Shannon Messersmith, who was an official foryears, is in his first season as the girls basketballcoach at Wallace.

“The girls are adjusting well to the changes,”Messersmith said. “We’ve got a new system andthings are going good.

“I can’t say enough about the girls. They have agreat work ethic and they work really hard in prac-tice.”

According to Messersmith, the Lady Wildcats havea good combination of size and quickness, whichmake them tough.

The coach lists Katelyn Melton, Paige Aylward.Morgan Messersmith, Haley Stpr, and Abbey Rohdeas impact players for his team.

“We are looking forward to having a successful sea-son,” Messersmith said. “I’m excited about our expe-rience and depth.”

Depth is something the Lady Wildcats have. Theroster has 16 girls, including four seniors.

“Not only do we have depth, we have good leaders,”Messersmith said. “We have what we need for a goodseason after we get the new system running and thegirls are just playing and not thinking too much.”

North Platte boys bas-ketball coach Matt Kamin-ski is looking forward tobringing back fourstarters off the 2011-12team that went 8-14 in atough Class A division.Kaminski, in his secondyear as the Bulldogs headcoach, feels the year’s ex-perience will be advanta-geous.

“I think just the overallunderstanding and expec-tations of our players, coaches, and what we aretrying to accomplish ismuch improved from ayear ago,” Kaminski said.“We feel that will lead topositives across the board.

“Our kids love playingthe game and love compet-ing.

“We feel the way wecompeted last season com-bined with the experiencewill play a huge part inour ability to be successfulin close games.”

The Bulldogs will beblessed with size andskilled perimeter shoot-ers. A solid inside/outcombination.

“Each and every day thecoaches are working hardto develop our players,”the coach said. “I think wewill be as athletic as mostof the teams we play. Wehave strong versatile postsand perimeter guys thatcan create for each otherand themselves. We can

give opponents match upproblems in differentways.

“Teams will try to get usin foul trouble so we willneed to be prepared toavoid those issues, bothmentally and physically.Shooting better from thefree throw line this seasonis on our minds. That wasa thorn for us last year.”

Back to help the Bull-dogs cause will be seniorsJack Kenny and LukeWright. Kenny, a 5-foot, 8-inch guard, will be reliedon to run the team fromthe point.

“Jack is a poised andskilled player that can cre-ate plays and control thetempo,” Kaminski said.“He’s taking more com-mand of directing theteam this season.”

Wright, at 6-3, brings amultiple of talents to thetable.

“Luke is an intense andemotional player,” saidKaminski. He’s strong in-side and a good passer fora big man. His experienceand leadership is valuableto our team.”

The tallest member ofthe team is junior DrewCallaghan. Kaminski feelsa summer filled with bas-ketball will help the two-year starter.

“Drew has impressiveall around ability for a 6-7player that our team willrely heavily on, night inand night out,” Kaminskisaid. “He’s played against

top-notch competitionover the summer and hisimprovement is evident.

“He’s more aggressive, stronger, and his presenceas a shot blocker and re-bounder will be felt. Hehas passion for the gameand will continue to be aleader for us.”

Kaminski also said jun-ior Kade Erickson is avery solid perimeter play-er that is a threat to score20 any night.

Also counted on to helpare junior Bradey Ander-son and sophomore ShaneMauch.

“Bradey is much im-proved and has the abilityto be an incredible defend-er, and will be counted onto make plays for us, espe-cially on the defensiveend,” said Kaminski. “AndShane understands thegame and is a well-round-ed player that will only getbetter and better as theseason goes. We will needhim to create offense forus with his shooting andpassing ability.

“I think most people un-derstand that our sched-ule, year in and year out, isdemanding with ourschool size and location inClass A,” said Kaminski.“We are smart enough tounderstand that we canbeat any team on ourschedule and any team canbeat us. We need to bementally prepared forevery game we enter.”

With only three seniors on the NorthPlatte Lady Bulldogs roster at the be-ginning of the 2012-13 season, headcoach Mark Woodhead will be lookingfor some underclassmen to step up andhelp the ranks. An early season jam-boree game against Sidney in the Ne-braska Hall of Fame series might havebeen just what the doctor ordered.

“For those that did not have a lot oftime in varsity games [last year],” saidWoodhead, “it allowed them to get a feelfor the speed and intensity of the gameat the varsity level. You just can’t repli-cate that in practice.”

Although the Lady Bulldogs are shorton varsity experience, Woodhead saidhis team is joined by a very successfuljunior varsity team.

“The JV wins do not always translateinto varsity wins, however our JV teamplayed at a high level throughout theirseason last year and had chemistry thatled to their success,” Woodhead said. “Ibelieve that has carried over to thisyear in practice, and our [Hall of Fame]game.”

Returning starters for North Platteare seniors Ashten Hernandez andKylie Wroot. Hernandez, the Lady Bull-dogs leading scorer a year ago, standsin at 6 foot and will take up residence inthe lane. Wroot (5-11) gives Hernandezsupport in the paint.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Harvey will bestarting for her second successive year.Harvey, at 5-7, will be called upon forsome outside offense.

“At this point I believe we could startany of our top six or seven,” Woodheadsaid. “They have played well in prac-tice, and there have been some very

pleasant surprises.“The three that returned from last

year have been very accepting of thosethat have moved up. They know what[last years JV] bring in terms of thegame and ability.

“Obviously the [returning starters]have a jump on the others, having beenthere before. However we have multi-sport athletes on our team and many ofthem have competed at the varsity levelin the fall or spring competition.”

Woodhead, beginning his 11th seasonas head coach, will look to senior Mag-gie Bianco and junior MadalynnDoughty to help shore up the startinglineup.

“Maggie is a tough competitor, and asa senior is providing leadership, as areKylie and Ashten which helps set thetone for practice,” the coach said. “Sheis a complete team player.

“Madalynn is a fireball. What shelacks in pure size she makes up in effortand heart. She is doing a nice job han-dling the ball and getting us set up inthe half court.”

Because of the Lady Bulldogs youth,Woodhead said it is important to get offto a good start.

“As young as we are, I think it is ex-tremely important to experience suc-cess early,” said Woodhead. “Successbreeds success.

“I believe playing together includesbeing supportive of one anotherwhether they are on the floor or on thebench, blending their strengths and ac-cepting their roles as team members.

“With all things being equal with theteams we compete against, playing to-gether will take them a long way. I be-lieve we are progressing in the right di-rection in playing as a team.”

The North Platte wrestling squad re-turns plenty of experience and leader-ship from their 2011-12 season, meaningBulldogs fans should experience anoth-er successful year. North Platte finishedthird at the Nebraska State WrestlingMeet in Omaha last February and re-turn nine starters, four whom broughthome state medals.

Dale Hall, beginning his fourth yearas head Bulldogs wrestling coach, is op-timistic of the upcoming season.

“The success we had last year makesit easier to set the bar high for us againthis year,” Hall said. “We know thatwe’re capable of doing well at the meetsand expect that of ourselves.

“However, we need to realize that wewon’t be able to sneak up on anybodythis year and will get everyone’s bestshot.”

The Bulldogs have over 50 athletesout for wrestling. Hall said a freshmanclass of 21 has the potential to be a verygood class in the future.

“I think our success that we had lastyear has helped get some new kids to atleast give it a try,” said Hall. “I also be-lieve it is important to talk to kids — re-cruit at your own high school.

“If they say no to me about wrestlingor aren’t sure about trying it, I try tohave some of their peers encouragethem. I want kids who are willing towork hard, be willing to be coached, and commit to the sport of wrestlingduring the season.”

Leading the charges for the Bulldogswill be two-time state medalist GrantHolscher. Joining Holscher are medal-ists Jonah Navarette, Paul Kraye andJason Lieneman.

Other starters returning includeAaron Houser, Colton Thompson, LaneCarpenter, Levi Thomlison and ShaneRoblee.

“Our nine returnees from last yearsteam bring experience and some greatleadership for the other wrestlers to fol-

low,” Hall said. “All of them are upperclassmen and know what to expect atpractices as well as at tournaments.

“They understand that the season islong and there will be some up anddowns, but you need to stay focused andwork at getting better each week.”

Hall said the Bulldogs are two deep atevery weight class and even deeper atsome weights.

“Depth is very important in anysport,” said the coach. “With depth inall weight classes, we have more compe-tition in the wrestling room.

“If you have to compete for your spotthroughout the year, you will becometougher mentally as well as get moremat time. It will make everyone better.”

The Bulldogs won’t have to go far fora little competition. Hall said areateams such as Grand Island, Kearney,Cozad and Lexington should test theNorth Platte wrestlers. Competitionthat should help the Bulldogs preparefor Conference, District and State.

“I think it’s important to be able tosee good competition throughout theseason,” Hall said. “You’re able to findout your strengths and weaknesses in ahurry and have a chance to get themcorrected before the end of the season.

“We will be tested early at the Kear-ney invite with Grand Island, Kearneyand Lincoln Southwest of the presea-son top ten teams and many good indi-viduals.”

The Bulldogs have several weightclasses that lack varsity experience, butHall expects that will get better as theseason goes on.

“I’m excited to see how some of thefirst year varsity wrestlers are able tocompete and watch them learn and im-prove as the season progresses,” saidHall. “I believe everyone on the teamcan do great things if they decide to putin the effort on a daily basis.

“It doesn’t have to be just our varsitywrestlers. We will have some very goodwrestlers on the JV team and expectthem to compete well at all of theirmeets.”

SeniorsMark Hanson and Trey Johnsonfinished last season strong andwill be solid contributors to theteam. Blake Edmonds is a seniortransfer and will fill one of ourupper weights for us.

Junior Garrett Toner fell onsome hard luck and had surgeryat the end of the football seasonand may miss this wrestling sea-son. Michael Tucker also a jun-ior, made some good gains in theweight room this summer andwill probably compete at the 170class.

A couple of youngsters, soph-omore Brennan Toner and fresh-man Hunter Coats will help to

fill out our lower weights. Bren-nan gained a lot of varsity expe-rience last year and showed im-provement at each meet. Alsonew to the squad is Trevor Walk-er, a sophomore.

Leadership key to North Platte in water

By MARK [email protected]

Leadership is a key in-gredient when talkingabout the North Platteswimming and divingteams this winter. CoachJon Beggs, in his thirtiethyear at North Platte HighSchool, believes this groupof seniors is ready to de-liver.

Seniors taking theirturn on the 2012-13 teamare Kathleen Cullinan,Shaylee Guethlein, KimHall, Jackie Paloucek,Cassie Mosel, Tyler andCharlie Halligan, LouieHarper, Erik Davis, ZachSaner and MatthewWalsh.

“Leadership is comingfrom a solid group of sen-

iors who want to work to-ward team success,” saidBeggs. “Several of thoseseniors have put in 3-4years and believe that it istheir turn to lead the teamto success.”

Numbers are anotherarea that will help theBulldogs. Currently thereare a total of 46 out for theteam — 27 girls and 19boys.

“With the larger num-bers we will be able to de-velop more depth in sever-al events as the seasonprogresses,” Beggs said.“We are beginning to de-velop several individualswho are going to help us inthe 50 and 100 free whichwill help us on the 200 and400 free relays as well asthe individual events. The

seniors are working onevents that they feel willhelp us as a team.”

Paloucek is the defend-ing conference divingchampion while juniorZac Burns and sophomoreLandon Jahnke are thetwo lone Bulldogs thathave state experience.

“Jackie has begun towork on dives that are nec-essary to compete at ahigher level of success,”Beggs said. “She is push-ing herself to increase her

degree of difficulty whichwill in turn produce high-er total scores as she mas-ters the dives.

“Zac has state experi-ence in both individualand relay events andhopes to return to state inthose events and Landonreturns as a member ofseveral relay events. Theyboth will help the otherswimmers get over thenervousness that someswimmers get when theperform at a higher level.”

Other returning letter-winners for the Bulldogsare Liz Dempsey, KaylaKalani and Jessica Hess.

Beggs said it will be im-portant for the youngswimmers to mature in or-der to help the squad.

“The new swimmerswill need to develop theirskills as the season pro-gresses,” the coach said.“Many of them are work-ing on a number of differ-ent swimming strokes tosee where they will fit in.”

One change in the statemeet format will be the ad-dition of qualifiers. Amove Beggs sees as a posi-tive.

“This year’s state meethas been expanded from24 to 32 qualifiers withscoring to 16 places ratherthan 12,” said Beggs. “Ithink that it may be help-ful for the future of thesport because it will givemore swimmers an oppor-tunity to have state experi-ence.”

Nearing the finish, Zac Burns of North Platte swims in the 200 yard intermediate event at the Kearney Invite last sea-son at UNK. Burns returns this season for the Bulldogs.

With a new coaching staff, welook to revamp and bring a newstyle of play to the Knights Bas-ketball team.

With everyone returning, sodo our leading scorer and re-bounder Jordan Wetovick andAustin Boller. We expect a bal-anced attack offensively and de-fensively.

KEY GAME: RETURNING LETTER WIN-

NERS: Jordan Wetovick, HunterRingenberg, Dustin Koch, Tan-ner Redenbaugh, Hunter John-son and Austin Boller.

bergPLAYER TO WATCH: Sage

Schmidt; Marcus FloromTEAM STRENGTH: Much of

our success will be around All-State candidate Lucas Gleisberg.

The senior is a three yearstarter and three year All con-ference performer. Several col-leges around the Midwest are in-terested in him. Brendan John-son will play post, but has theability to knock down threepointers, plus being a very goodfree throw shooter. Two otherpotential starters are a pair ofsophomores in Cody Aspenleiterand Chase Barthel. These twoare very athletic and quick andwill need to contribute if we aregoing to be successful.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Obvious-ly lack of depth. Losing Gareyhurts a ton because he was atwo-year starter, great passerand shooter. We are hoping thatTowne will be back, along withFlorom. We lack height, buthope to rely on team quickness. We will need underclassmen tostep up.

SEASON OUTLOOK: Wehope to be competitive againthis season. Due to several foot-ball injuries we will be chal-lenged. We lost 2nd Team AllConference player Riley Garey(ACL), starter Keith Towne(MCL), and key sub MarcusFlorom (broken hand).

RETURNING LETTER WIN-NERS: Lucas Gleisberg; Bren-dan Johnson; Keith Towne;Cody Aspenleiter; Chas Barthel

COMMENTS: Finally we playa competitive schedule withover half of our game compris-ing of D1 or C2 schools. We arehoping to challenge for confer-ence title, but will be tough, andArapahoe has another foreignexchange student (third foreignexchange student in five years!)which makes them the favorite.
