Hi Martha:

You should check the Archives of the McCoy Family Group as theWilliam/Willis thing has been discussed before.

I have researched the Willis MCCOY/MECOY line at the Family HistoryLibrary at Salt Lake City and could not find any connection between theWilliam MCCOY (b. about 1756-60) we are focusing on and Willis in NC.That doesn't mean that William was not from NC, but merely that Williswas not his father. At this point we are not sure where William MCCOYwas born although we surmise his mother's name was Anna (her secondmarriage to John STUMP) and father's name probably William who possiblydied 1764 in Loudoun County, VA.

In the archives look for the email 'ReParents of William McCoy(1756-1835)??' submitted by Melissa on 3/18/2004. She presents athoroughly researched hypothesis about the connections and relationsbetween the PAYNEs, STUMPs, and MCCOYs and why there is strongcircumstantial evidence to support Anna and William as William MCCOY'sparents which was initially put forward by Julie.

Best wishes,Judy

McCoy, a soldier. he married Joanna in 1781, he would of been c.23in 79 and if this is same William that I just posted he would ofbeen 18 old enough to fight. This happen in Rockingham County butthat dont mean, that may just be where she had to go to for that.this is also what i have come up with John McCoy in Md born 1690died 1762 wife unknow n had son Archibald said father of oldWilliam. he also had sons named John, William, Daniel and couple.we have a Daniel in Bedford County, John, William also in BedfordCounty. I am guessing Archibald is related to our William and hisbrother John as someone in this group had once said, and I hope thatthis week I will get to start to tie these together.I been putting my'n and my husband’s families together for a couple ofyears now and this McCoy family has been the hardest, I have evenwent as far as going to Ky and NC twice. I painfully rule out the NCMecoy/McCoys as I live about 25 minutes from Melissa Bell McCoy’sfamily in North Mississippi.I think there related also there family had a dispute over the Rev.War and brothers took sides with both the Americans and English, butas they were from yet another county they fought for what theythought was best, but the result went as far as some of themchanging the spelling of there name and never talking again. To be very honest I intend on looking back to rumors which I am sureyou have heard of 4 to 9 brothers coming to America and settlinghere if John in Md dont connect.when I first started this I was so excited about family rumor thatmy grandparents were Hatfields and McCoys and my grandfather waseasy to find as he was a Runyon and I have off sets of mygrandmothers connections to old William McCoy but not threw Williamand Joanna and personally after all the time I have in this I do notcare any more if they are, I would just like to put this togethersome how.But going off of what we have Paynes and Stumps coming from Md andMcCoys coming out of there and all at one time in same area Va. Iwould say this is about it................ so this is where I'm atand what I'm up to and I hope my next posting reads we found our

Judy, as far as I know the Staunton River begins life as the RoanokeRiver, west of Roanoke, VA, and flows southeastward and it's name ischanged to the Staunton River by the time it reaches NC. I don't knowwhether that was true at the time, however. Maybe it was called theStaunton River by the time it got to Bedford County!?

William, senior?

Julie brought this up before but I thought I'd throw it out again:

There is an entry on the IGI for a daughter born to John and Anne STUMP:

Eleanor (or Elenor) b. abt. 1764, Staunton Township, Bedford Co., VA.

Melissa had posted this:

1805 Deed from William McCoy and Joanna to William Hopkins, 167 acres on Branches of the Staunton River

so I assume that Staunton Township would be near the Staunton River? Does that narrow the focus of where these people were living? Gotta get a map!

Anyway, I was wondering if this is the same couple we are researching? Might Ann(a) MCCOY have had a second family with John STUMP? True, it is possible that this is John STUMP (b.abt. 1746, Frederick Co., MD) son of Thomas STUMP. He could have followed his Uncle John to Bedford Co., VA. But if Ann(a) MCCOY married John STUMP after 1764 she certainly could still bear children.

Elenor STUMP married John ASHWELL 30 June 1785 in Bedford Co. He had been Johhn STUMP's endentured servant for 7 years prior.

Got this reply from the PAYNE, DENT researcher on WorldConnect:

My Marshall's lived near Nolans Ferry and worked Nelson Ferry at Point ofRocks in the early 1750's. Paynes would have been in that area. We were

Page 7: William McCoy Notes from McCoy Family Group @ … · McCoy, a soldier. he ... Daniel and couple. we have a Daniel in Bedford County, John, William also in Bedford ... john born in

Tenants on Carrolton Manor will the Paynes owned land.

I know nothing about VA and MD so this doesn't mean much to me, but it seems to help pinpoint where the PAYNEs and STUMPS had their property and ferry operation.

My Grandmom was Susannah McCoy b. 1790 dau of William. She married1821 in Woodford Co., KY and died in Daviess Co., KY. I've never been ableto 'prove' any other McCoy relationship. A William McCoy, while living in Woodford Co., Ky applied for apension on 1/10/1818. He enlisted in VA 2/1778. He stated he had no family.Woodford Co., Pensions S.36098VA. My additional note is PVT 1818 . age80. The 1791

Roberta's research:

In 1749 In Loudoun County there is no Tithable (Tax) for William McCoy or

any other McCoy for that matter. There is no Tith for a Stump in 1749.But there is a tith for a William Payne and a William Payne Jr.

The first time that Thomas Stump shows up on the Loudoun County tith is in1760. There is no McCoy on the tithes for 1760.In 1761 Thomas Stump and William McCay ( McCoy) show up together on thetith list for Loudoun County. They are in the Cameron Parish which is nearGoose Creek and Little River.

In 1723 a Robert Paine was a witness to the Will of a Thomas Stump(Maryland). In 1727 Robert Paine dies in Queen Ann Parish, MD and there ismention at this same time of Flayle Payne.

A Thomas Stump, Flail Payne Jr., and John Payne were partners in theoperation of a Ferry on the Potomac near Knoxville, MD. ( 1760) In thebook Historian's Guide to Loudoun County, Va it makes a refernece toThomas Stump, A Virginia resident on the upper Potomac River whorepresented a Maryland partnership operating Loudoun's County's fourthactive Potomac ferry around 1760. Stump's landing was about a mile west ofDutchman's Creek on the Virginia shore. this ferry went down 4 miles toHarper's ferry. Flail Payne Jr bought out his brother John and assertedprimary interest in 1763. Thereafter the crossing above Dutchman's Creekwas known as "Frail Pain's (sic) ferry. I copied a picture of the mapshowing this Ferry route operation. I'll scan it and send to you. What'sinteresting is this Ferry route was next door to Frederick County, MD.Washington County was formed from Frederick county. I am really feelingthat William McCoy Sr was part of those McCoy's from Washington County.

Page 15: William McCoy Notes from McCoy Family Group @ … · McCoy, a soldier. he ... Daniel and couple. we have a Daniel in Bedford County, John, William also in Bedford ... john born in

I saw mention of a Thomas Stump who in 1700 migrated from Prussia to CecilCounty, MD. Cecil County neighbors Queen Ann Parish, MD where RobertandFlayle Payne are seen in 1727.

In the book Historian Guide to Loudoun County, Va there is mentioned inApril of 1763 James McCoy, an orphan six years old, is bound to a WilliamFielder to learn the trade of a Stone Mason. I tried to find out who thisJames McCoy father could have been but ran out of time at the library.

Julie,My great grandmother was Sallie Jefferson Ashwell d/o Daniel C.Ashwell. I think the stories about John Ashwell are veryinteresting but I'm afraid most of them are family lore. Theoriginal story concerning John Ashwell was that he came over in 1727on a cattle boat. The year 1727 was later dropped because thatwould've made him very, very old. He did own over 2000 acres of landwhen he died in about 1845.There's a interesting book about families that lived in that area ofBedford entitled "Cause and Effect" by D. Claytor Brooks, copyright1972. It's no longer in print but I think you could probably borrowit interlibrary loan. It doesn't have the earliest ancestors suchas John Ashwell & John Payne but does have some of their descendantsand the descendants of other families in that area. D. Claytor

To Julie from Roberta:

Julie, I was looking through genealogy emails on the Arms family. BenjaminB Mccoy's (John and Sarah McCoy son) first wife was Lucy Arms. An Armsfamily researcher ,Tony Arms, stated in a message that Benjamin's motherwas not Sarah Payne but Sarah Burnett. Tony is suppose to be a very goodArms family genealogist. I have found no marriage record for John McCoyand Sarah Burnett.

Julie, in your email you mention an Obediah Burnett, son of Joshua andRebeka Melton Burnett. Last year I found on a microfilm at the FHC aBedford County Court Summons on Sept 23, 1816. Called into court that daywereBenjamin B McCoy, Jesse Orndorff, Obediah Burnett, Lucy Arms, and

Page 29: William McCoy Notes from McCoy Family Group @ … · McCoy, a soldier. he ... Daniel and couple. we have a Daniel in Bedford County, John, William also in Bedford ... john born in

Polly Oroff. They were called into court to give evidence against a JohnGross who was charged with a felony crime. I haven't followed through withthis case. This case might give info on the relationship between BenjaminMcCoy and Obediah Burnett.

Hi Pat:

All I have is that these men were granted a certain amount of acres.'Granted' I took to mean that the land was unowned and given outright.I found this online:

In March of 1732 the proprietor of the Provence of Maryland desired to attract settlers to the Northern and the Western areas of his territory., so he made a proclamation declaring special land prices and taxes for settlers.

1. 1st Any person having a family to come to the land within three years of the proclamation and actually settle on the land could have two hundred acres without payment for 3 years. After 3 years the settler had to pay to the proprietor four shillings sterling for every hundred acres. 2. 2nd Any single person, male or female between the ages of 14 and 31 could have 100 acres under the same conditions. 3. 3rd They were to be charged taxes and the security of their land would be insured as if they were British subjects, which was quite a boon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Large tracts of land were speedily secured by a relatively few of the wealthier citizens of Maryland, including the finest parts of the valleys of the Monocacy and the Antietam.

Page 33: William McCoy Notes from McCoy Family Group @ … · McCoy, a soldier. he ... Daniel and couple. we have a Daniel in Bedford County, John, William also in Bedford ... john born in

1. Daniel Dulaney took a patent for "Monocacy Manor" a tract of 8983 acres. 2. Charles Carroll took "Carroll's Manor" in what is now Buckeystown district. 3. Patrick Dulaney took a tract upon a portion of which Frederick City was built. 4. James Carroll took a large tract in Linganore district. 5. Leonard Calvert and Thomas Johnson patented the Catoctin Furnace property.

There are no dates given. The quotes are from a book by Thomas J.C.Williams called 'The History of Frederick County, Maryland'. There is atleast a 20 year gap between the 'opening' of the Territory and whenDaniel MCCOY is granted his acreage. The French and Indian War began in1755 and it hit the settlers pretty hard.

All of the settlements of the western parts of Frederick County eventually came under attack. Since the Scots/Irish were largely in the area between the Indians and the Germans, they were the first to feel the brunt of the attacks. Then the colonists, including the Germans were killed, tortured and burned out. Monocacy was burned until just the old log Church and a few nearby buildings were left standing. The depredations suffered by the colonists were legendary

In 1790 Thomas McCoy married CatherineStrange and 1794 John McCoy married Lavinia Fuqua. In 1783 MarthaMcCoy sold Jesse Cobbs 1OO acres on Little Falling river. An instance of the difficulty attending the locating of warrantsissued for their services to American soldiers after the wars, is tobe found in the petition of one Alexander McCoy (or Mackey) to theVirginia Assembly. The first presentation of this claim was made in

May, 178O, when McCoy proved that Captain Alexander McKinzie, anative of North Britain, served as an officer in the French war underMajor Grant in 1758 when he was killed; also Roderick McKinzie servedas sergeant at the same time and was killed. McCoy's wife, Jean, wassecond cousin to the two McKinzie's, and was their only relation inthis country. On April 3O, 178O, John Talbot presented this claimwhich called for 3,OOO acres of land, sending it by Mr. Callaway(Richard Callaway, then in Kentucky county), but the latter could getno one to lay it. It was then laid before the registrar in Richmond,in order to prove that no one had before obtained a warrant for thesame bounty land.

Hello,

My name is Marvin McCoy. I recently joined the group as I am adescendant of Benjamin B. McCoy. Other researchers from this line andmyself firmly believe that Benjamin B. McCoy is the son of John andSarah McCoy with John being the brother to William McCoy who marriedJoanna Payne.

I have been exploring the Stump / McCoy association for a while andagree that William and Anna McCoy were most likely the parents ofWilliam, John and Margaret McCoy of the Bedford/Botetourt area.

As for other siblings of William, John and Margaret, I feel that acertain Thomas McCoy of Botetourt County (where Margaret McCoy & herhusband Thomas Price lived) is another brother. Thomas is on the 1810census of Botetourt as well as Margaret's family. Thomas is shown asbeing born before 1765. The marriage records of Botetourt County list

some of children of Thomas McCoy.

Drucilla McCoy married Jacob Staley October 7, 1804. Thomas is listedas the father.Thomas is also listed as the father of a Sarah McCoy who marriedWilliam Johnston June 2, 1813.

Both of these girls were married by a minister named John Helms.

Helms also performed the marriages of a few more McCoys that did notdirectly state the father's name. These children are not associatedwith William or John.

I am mentioning this because most of Thomas & Margaret McCoy Price'schildren are married in Botetourt County by the same minister, JohnHelms. Other children that may or may not belong to Thomas areClement McCoy (married Joanna Cox January 15, 1814 by John Helms) andFanny McCoy (married James Sewell February 2, 1808 by John Helms).

Children of Thomas & Margaret McCoy Price married in Botetourt are:

Agnes T. Price to William Martin October 24, 1823Elizabeth Price to Stephen Holstine December 2, 1818Margaret Price and William Bennett July 8, 1811 (John Helms, Minister)Mary Price and Henry Scott January 28, 1802Rebecca Price and John Hank April 8, 1817 (John Helms, Minister)Sally Price and Samuel Brown Littlepage Feb. 9, 1807 (John Helms, Min.)Sophia Price and Jacob Price October 9, 1809 (John Helms, Minister)

These children are also confirmed in Thomas Price's will.

Also, there was a Betsy McCoy who married George Rock Jr. Nov. 13,1811 in Botetourt. Her father was listed as Hugh McCoy (deceased).
