On Writing LORD OF THE FLIES

It was simply what seemed sensible for me to write after the war when everyone was thanking God they werent Nazis. Id seen enough to realize that every single one of us could be Nazis. --William Golding

Some of Golding's favorite childhood books were Tarzan of the Apes, Coral Island, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. All of these books descibe man as a basically good creature who struggles to avoid the evils of society. The island setting for Lord of the Flies and the names Ralph, Jack, and Simon have been taken from Coral Island.5InspirationGolding once allowed his class of boys total freedom in a debate, but had to intervene as mayhem soon broke outExperiences in warCritical response to Coral Island by R.M. BallanytynePhilosophical questions about human nature

Philosophical InfluenceJohn HobbesEnglish Philosopher: 1588- 1679Man is by nature selfishly individualisticMan constantly at war with other menFear of violent death is sole motivation to create civilizationsMen need to be controlled by absolute sovereignty to avoid brutish behavior
