London 2012 Sustainable Design: Delivering an Olympic Legacy London 2012’s relentless pursuit of sustainability sets it apart from any other international event of its scale. It is the greenest Olympic Games ever. From the very beginning, sustainability informed and drove the Olympic bid. The Games grew out of the original vision to regenerate a whole area of East London and only build permanent structures that would create a legacy. It is sustainability in the broadest sense emphasising the social and economic benefits for the wider community. Environmental thinking has been embedded in all aspects of staging and planning from transportation to entertainment. Nowhere has it been further reaching, however, than in design, both at the level of master planning and individual buildings and products. This insistence on sustainable standards at macro and micro levels provides essential precedents for design professionals to work from, whether it is pioneering techniques of soil reclamation or green procurement and knowledge capture. The book is organised around individual case studies. It begins with the large-scale urban infrastructure and transport work in Stratford and the landscape plan for the Lea Valley, then addresses individual buildings, such as the Olympic Stadium, Velodrome and Aquatics Centre. Finally, it drills down into detail design such as lighting, product design and graphics. Key data and metrics are provided throughout, highlighting sustainable standards. The book features a rich variety of visual material, including ‘in progress’ construction photography, computer-generated visualisations, detail construction drawings and environmental diagrams, plans and sections. New photography has also been specially commissioned to fully capture the range of completed design elements.
