We want to thank all of our very generous donors, supporters, dedicated volunteers and staff for helping us

Recovery from Hurricane Hermine is Underway

Just like many other

animal welfare

organizations, FWMA

was severely impacted

by Hurricane Hermine.

The Center was without

power for an entire week.

No electricity means

running water was not

available either. Many trees came down, debris

was scattered everywhere, most of the animal

feed in the freezers was spoiled and ruined, and

a large segment of deer enclosures was

damaged. To complicate matters over 80 wild

animals in distress were brought in during that

same week after the storm ended. It was all

hands on deck as staff and volunteers continued

to provide care to those in need in spite of the

power outage and the stifling summer heat.

Chris Beatty, Executive Director, stated that

after the storm passed the community stepped

up by providing generators, water and ice,

squirrel foster care, animal rescue, basic food

supplies, grounds cleanup, cutting of trees,

pressure washing, and even taking laundry to

their own homes. "We have a very small but

dedicated staff who worked diligently to get the

facility back in order and who showed up to

work in the toughest conditions. A huge thank

you to all who helped us stay up and running."

Once again, we have native Red Cedar trees for sale. Not only do they make great

Christmas trees for friends and relatives, but they can be planted after the holidays

and live on to provide a natural habitat for our native wildlife trees will be available

from November 26th through December 15th for a suggested donation of $20.

Theycan be picked up at our wildlife center or at Purple Martin nursery, VCA

Wakulla Animal Hospital, Ace Hardware, and a variety of locations in Franklin

County. These are very popular every year and always sell out, so be sure to get

yours early!

Now that things are getting back to normal, FWMA has started repairs

with the assistance of participants from the Boy Scouts and the FSU

Environmental Service Program. Damaged fencing has been torn down

and removed to prepare for replacement of 360 feet of deer pen that was

badly damaged by the storm.

Thank you so much Tallahassee Action Grants and all of the wonderful donors that sponsored fence

sections. The deer pen will soon be operational again!

The Yard Sale was a Huge Success! Thanks so much to Nads Storage and everyone who donated

items, came out to visit and buy items, and helped out during

the yard sale in October.FWMA had more items donated for

this sale than in previous sales and because of you, one of our

most successful yard sales to date - raising over $2000 for the

Center. The next yard sale is in March so mark your calendar

and watch for updates on our Facebook page.

Ever wonder what happens to those critters that can’t go free because their

injuries where too severe for them to survive in the wild? Every effort is made to

find suitable placement at permitted educational facilities. Here are some of our

animals that where transferred to new homes that included Gulfarium, The

Smithsonian, Zoo Miami, Flamingo Gardens, and Homosassa Springs. Thanks to

our friends Gail and Scott for getting them there safely.

To the Fogleman family and their

friends, and the lovely ladies of Girl

Scout Troop 1 for the incredible job they

did rebuilding the otter pen. It looks

fantastic and we know the next group of

otters will love it. Until their arrival, the

seabirds can enjoy these luxury

accommodations!

Thank you to all the helping hands for

clean up by the FSU Environmental

Service Group!

To Shaun Streetman

the one that failed

during the storm.

To our Dear Friends at Crawfordville Animal Hospital

The news is out: Doctors Otfried and Heidi Guhrt have decided to retire and have sold their

veterinary practice in Crawfordville. We have taken all of our wildlife patients to Dr. Otfried

Guhrt for many years and he has fixed everything from alligators with broken jaws, eagles

with lead poisoning, deer that were hit by cars, to skunks that sprayed up his whole office.

He performed diagnostic testing, prescribed medications, and performed surgeries on all of

our wildlife patients.

Dr. Guhrt always worked behind the scenes and never took credit for all the

wonderful work he did, not only for our center but for all the other rescue organizations in

the county. This will be a tremendous loss for all of us, but we’re glad that they both will

now enjoy some very well-deserved time off.

We thank both of them for everything they have done for FWMA and for our

personal families and pets. We are going to miss you both so very much!

Mr. Peregrine says,

"Why are you

smiling? Now what

are we supposed to

do without you?"
