Since time immemorial, human beings and society have

segregated jobs on the basis of gender. There are some jobs

that men should do while others are deemed fit for women. You

can clearly see the divide when you look at an engineering class

and a class of Humanities. The former is dominated by boys

while the latter is by girls. Maritime employment is one sector

which has long been the bastion of men. Maritime and offshore

jobs are picked by men and very rarely would you find a women

anywhere in this sector!

Things are changing now, though. Women can try out maritime

and offshore jobs, simply because it is a wonderful career

option for them. But there are steep challenges and some very

valid reasons why women generally do not opt for jobs at sea.

The first among them is definitely the question of awareness.

Just as you would find people conscious about the job

description of an engineer or a doctor, even a digital marketing

specialist, precious little is known about offshore industry jobs.

This lack of knowledge does not encourage women enough to

strike out something different in their career choice.

Other than this lack of awareness, a major hurdle while women

have stayed away from maritime and offshore jobs is the general

perception of society. If there is a seeming lack of awareness

about a sector or industry, people are wary about what

employees do in such a set-up. This becomes quite vicious when a

woman works in that kind of an industry. You can safely say the

same about jobs at sea. Women are not confident how such a job

will be perceived by people around them, including their family

and friends.

The situation is changing fast. More people

are now waking up to offshore industry jobs

as a career option. They are aware of what

kind of jobs and challenges are there on the

horizon. There are so many jobs at sea that

are suitable for women. With more women

engineers and skilled technicians, they are in

a much better position to be hired in the

maritime and offshore jobs. The change must

happen from the perspective of women as

well. They need to understand that this

industry is a place where they can showcase

their talent and become a thoroughbred

professional.

Workshops and seminars about maritime

employment are changing the scenario,

one person at a time. It is not far away

when there are more women signing up

for jobs at sea.
