Why We Instruct

James 3:1: For teachers, greater influence translates into greater responsibility.

There are numerous kinds of Bible teachers in the world today: Some do it for the wrong reasons, others do it for the right reasons.

Scripture tells us what our goal in instruction should be: love from a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith (I Timothy 1:5).

We are to promote God’s love in the church.

Why We Instruct

The goal of instruction is love. The unconditional love God had for us (Rom.

5:8). We are to love God (I John 4:10, 19). Love is an action (II John 6; John 14:15, 21). Love the truth (II Thess. 2:10-12). Love brethren (I John 4:7-21; John 13:34-35). Love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). The goal: To produce selflessness and humility,

even in the face of our enemies.

Why We Instruct

Love from a pure heart. Not just about outside action, but also inner

motivation (I Cor. 13:3). We fall short ourselves; why we need Jesus

(Prov. 20:9; Heb. 10:19-22). Follow after good works (II Tim. 2:20-26). Do not live in hypocrisy (Matt. 23:23-28). Our actions will follow our heart (Matt. 12:33-

35). The goal: To produce a pure heart and clean

mind.

Why We Instruct

Love from a good conscience. Beginning of our salvation (I Pet. 3:21). Paul’s life (Acts 23:1, 9:3-6).

Love from a sincere faith. Faith without hypocrisy (James 3:17) and

undisguised (Rom. 10:9-10; Matt. 10:32-33). Living differently from the world (I Peter

2:11-12, 4:1-6). The goal: Strengthen so we believe, practice

and teach our faith, without hypocrisy.
