Saturday 8 — Sunday 9 June 2019

Earth Wind & Tyre is a 216-mile, wind-themed cycle challenge.

Now in its fifth year, this two-day event brings together teams

and individuals from across the renewable energy industry and

beyond to raise funds for Renewable World's work. In

celebration of clean energy, the route passes 11 iconic onshore

wind farms as it winds its way up from Durham to Edinburgh. In

2018, the event attracted over 55 participants and raised a grand

total of £81,000.

ABOUT RENEWABLE WORLD

Globally, almost 1 in 5 people do not have access to electricity; over 1 in 4 lack basic water services like taps and

safe drinking water; and over 1 in 3 are without clean cooking facilities. Without access to energy, people remain

trapped in a vicious circle of poverty.

Renewable World helps those in need by working with local partners to provide access to clean and sustainable

energy. Communities are very much at the heart of the process of installing, managing and maintaining new

renewable energy systems, so that they benefit fully. These energy systems can light homes and power

businesses; pump water for drinking, sanitation and irrigation; and provide a clean fuel for cooking.

Access to renewable energy not only helps to drive improvements in the health, education and income of local

people; it also reduces environmental damage. Since we began work in 2007, our programmes have transformed

the lives of over 35,000 people in Central America, East Africa, and South Asia.

SUSHMITA’S STORY

How a solar-powered water pump has transformed her life

Sushmita is from the village of Sirubari, one of the communities in Nepal where we have helped to install a solar

water-pumping system. These systems provide communities like Sirubari with easy access to water for drinking,

cooking, washing, sanitation, agriculture and

for their livestock.

Sushmita used to spend 4 back-breaking hours

each day collecting water. A round trip to the

water source would take 1 hour. Now, each trip

takes her just 15 minutes, saving her 3 precious

hours each day. Time she can instead spend

studying and helping her parents with

vegetable farming.

“I always used to think about what my life

would be like if I didn’t have to spend time

carrying water. I would be able to spend more

time doing school work and studying.”
