The Downfall of Rome
It is arguable that the Roman Empire was one of the most powerful dynasties ever.
However, what most do not know about Rome is that when Rome fell in 476 .! only the
"estern Empire #ollapsed. $he reason for this is be#ause of !io#letian%s demand to split Rome
sin#e it was e&tremely hard for him to manage the entire Roman Empire. He de#ided that he
would split the land with !io#letian taking the east side of Rome and his good friend 'a&imian
taking the west side of Rome. $he Eastern Roman Empire, whi#h was eventually #alled (the
)y*antine Empire+ fell nearly a thousand years after the "estern Empire #ollapsed in 4-. $his
essay will #over the reasons why Rome #ollapsed with supporting arguments su#h as the
invasion of )arbarian tribes su#h as the Huns and /oths, the rise of the Eastern Roman Empire
and military overspending.
n important reason for the #ollapsing of Rome is the rise of the )arbarians and the
)arbarians atta#king the Romans. +$he Romans #alled themselves lords of the world. nd so it
seemed they were. ll the trade and skill, all the art and learning of the known world, were
theirs. )eyond the borders of the Roman Empire the world was given over to wild barbarians,
who were skilled neither in the arts of war nor of pea#e. $hat the #ivili*ation of Rome should go
down before their ignoran#e seemed impossible. 0et the barbarian triumphed, Rome fell, and the
mighty empire #rumbled into dust+. 1in#e, 22 .! the Romans had a lot of #hallenges that

needed to be over#ome su#h as the #onstant fights with the /ermani# $ribes. However by 22
.!, the barbarians had rea#hed the Romans borders and by 42 .! the 8isigoth 9ing lari#
after numerous tries su##essfully #aptured the #ity of Rome. :+ ;nder their young king lari#,
the 8isigoths atta#ked the empire again and again. $wi#e lari# laid siege to Rome. $wi#e he
spared the imperial #ity. 1till a third time he #ame, and this time he sa#ked and plundered it
without mer#y+.
nother reason for the #ollapse of Rome is the rise of the )y*antine Empire.+ Eastern
Roman Empire or )y*antium rose to e&isten#e by the foundation of the #ity

#osts severely weakening administration and defense+. t its height, the Roman Empire stret#hed
from the tlanti# B#ean all the way to the Euphrates River in the 'iddle East, but its grandeur
may have also been its downfall. "ith su#h a broad territory to govern, the empire fa#ed an
administrative and logisti#al nightmare. Even with their road systems, the Romans were unable
to #ommuni#ate >ui#kly or effe#tively enough to manage their holdings. Rome struggled to
marshal enough troops and resour#es to defend its frontiers from lo#al rebellions and outside
atta#ks and by the se#ond #entury, Emperor Hadrian was for#ed to build his famous wall in
)ritain Dust to keep the enemy at bay. s more and more funds were put into the military upkeep
of the empire, great te#hnologi#al advan#ement slowed and Rome%s #ivil stru#ture fell into
disrepair.
