I can’t believethe holidays arehere. It feels likejust yesterday

we were welcoming 2010! I hope thatthis year has been good to all of you.During these rough economic timeswe should be grateful for every day. Iknow that I am most grateful for allof you and your support. What a greattime to sit back with friends andfamily to enjoy each other’s companyand reflect on accomplishments, challenges and successes.

I would like to wish all of you aHappy, Healthy, and SAFE HolidaySeason. g

By Diana Williams, Executive Director

Return on Your“MembershipInvestment”Each year ourmembers are facedwith the opportunityto continue theirsupport and

involvement with the WoodlandHills~Tarzana Chamber of Commerce.

I heard from a member who wasconsidering renewal that this was atough year for him. He didn’t have anychamber members book anappointment. “Sorry, love the staff andgot some great friends over the years, just didn’t see a return on myinvestment this year.”

Imagine my surprise when I heardthis. How could this be? Our officereceived calls for referrals as he wasthe only professional member in hiscategory. Also, I got back to the officeto research it. According to our onlinedirectory, his listing had 34 hits thisyear

Of course, the first thing that cameto mind was “your community did get areturn on your investment.” No, Ididn’t say that outloud. Everyrenewal counts. It helps us achieveso much. It alsomade me realizethat chambermembers don’tannounce “Hey, Iam here becauseyou are a chambermember.”

How do we get our members toannounce their loyalty in ourcommunity? We have cards that youwill present everywhere you go. Thepurpose of the card is to make sure youreceive special considerations chambermembers give one another.

When you present your card or ask

ATTENDa ribbon cutting this week!

Notes from NeighborhoodWatch

HOLIDAYS, the temptation toleave personal property andshopping bags in plain sightcreates great opportunity forthieves. Avoid being the victimof a crime by taking a littleextra effort, keep this in mind“Lock It, Hide It, Keep It”

Beware of Ticket Scams!Recently, a big increase incounterfeit tickets for sought-after concerts and sportsevents being sold on Craigslist.Internet sites like Craigslist,Oodle, Yahoo Classifieds, andEBay provide some greatbargains, but think twice beforeyou purchase event tickets ifthe site does not provide aguarantee. Selling unneededtickets on Craigslist can be fastand easy, but buying them canleave you holding a FORGERYand stuck on the outside of thevenue unless you know how tospot a fake. If you do choose topurchase event tickets from aprivate party, consider thefollowing tips:

1. Know what the tickets aresupposed to look like. It’seasy to print up fake tickets,if you know what they aresupposed to look like, you areless likely to be scammed.

2. Meet somewhere safe. If you are carrying $1,000.00for those special tickets,Consider meeting in aPOLICE LOBBY so you don’t get robbed.

3. If the seller will accept acheck, use a cashier’s checkinstead of a personal one toprotect your identity. If theperson is a scam artist, youdon’t want to give them achance to forge your check.

4. If you don’t meet in person, consider using a service likePayPal that has someprotection to refund yourmoney in case of a scam or ifyou never receive the tickets.

We are always in search of agreat deal and private partyads like Craigslist can be agreat place to find a bargain, just don’t let yourself fall victimto a scam while trying to gettickets to your favorite event. gFREE?

by Sean McCarthyOn November 13, thirty five people showed up early on

Saturday morning to beautify Ventura Boulevard inWoodland Hills. Most were from local church communitiesas well as chamber members. Non chamber participantswere split between congregants from Shepherd of the HillsChurch in Chatsworth and Elders from Church of JesusChrist Latter Day Saints wards in Reseda and WoodlandHills.

The area cleaned is 3.3 miles of Ventura Blvd., fromWilbur on the east to Canoga Avenue on the west. Wetrimmed and cleaned tree wells, swept sidewalks andremoved litter. Additionally, we swept four freewayunderpasses at De Soto, Winnetka, Corbin and Wilbur. All of the work was completed in 3.5 hours.

Ninety-five bags of debris were collected. Special thanks to Western Bagels and Jersey Mike's

Travel Tip Checklist• Place houselights on timer to make it appear as if you’re home.• Temporarily suspend mail and newspaper deliveries.• Ask trusted friend or neighbor to keep watch over your home.

Provide your contact information to them.• Charge cell phone or mobile devices prior to traveling.• Pack strategically and as lightly as possible. Most airlines typically

allow just one carry-on bag.• Remember TSA’s 3-1-1 Rules for all liquids and gels you pack in

carry-on luggage.• Print boarding passes 24 hours prior to your flight.• Place government-issued ID that matches reservation exactly into

wallet or purse you’ll take with you. (TSA’s Secure Flight)• Make copies of itineraries and confirmation numbers for airlines,

hotels and rental cars. Bring with you.• Make list of important telephone numbers for airlines, hotel, rental

cars and travel agent. Carry with you.• Wear comfortable clothes and easily removable shoes. This will

speed up airport security.• Leave home with cushion of time to get you to airport at least two

hours before domestic departures or three hours beforeinternational flights.

• Be prepared for crowds. Even for seasoned travelers, rememberthat this may be the only time of the year when many are traveling,so they may be less prepared or informed than you.

• Be prepared to pay for checked bags. Exceptions include preferredstatus with the airline, those who are traveling in first class, andthose carrying certain airlines’ preferred credit cards, includingDelta’s American Express Card and Continental’s MasterCard.

• Know which items are prohibited by law.• Place all metal items (wallet, watch, jewelry, cell phone, etc.) in

your carry-on or in a security binas you approach security.• Remove laptops, DVD players and other similar items from bag and

place in security bin. The exception is the TSA-approved laptop bag.• Remove all coats, jackets and sweatshirts with front zippers and

place into security bin.• Remove shoes and place on security conveyor belt.• Remember that patience is a virtue and that the holiday spirit

begins with you. g

There are no words for the gift your shared at the

Old Fashioned Family FairBy Kandis LandmannMy first experience with theWoodland Hills~TarzanaChamber of Commerce wasat a new Members breakfastthat I attended whileshopping for a means tomarket my product. I found a“Home” after meeting theAmbassadors and Diana, Jen& Felicia. I guess I havecome full circle, as I nowwanted to share that feelingwith friends and neighbors in

our Community. In Send Out Cards, that is called “YourWHY” behind your justification of putting in endless hours, climbing mountains, and putting your heart before pocketbook. In my life time, I have heard stories about thingsoccurring, that in my heart I just knew was a Miracle.October 24, 2010 the OLD FASHIONED FAMILY FAIRfrom Canton, Ohio was transported to Warner Center Parkin Woodland Hills California. The sun was shining brightlyon our event, until the very end of our day. This by itselfwas an answer to my prayers. I have so many of you tothank that have worked diligently, to make this day happenwith a bit of panache, and pulling together a CommunitySpirit of “Just Do it!

Thank you VOLUNTEERS for working with such pride asevidenced by the smile on your faces. It didn’t matter if youwere standing over a hot grill in the sun, selling tickets, building a corral out of hay, making cotton candy, root beerfloats, walking about with animals, MC’ing tugs of war orwatching a watermelon eating contest with CouncilmanZine delighting the crowd. This was a wave of peopleoffering an extraordinary effort for the success of an eventthat turned off the TV, turned off the computers, & broughtpeople out to enjoy being together. Team leaders, BobAustin, Patrick Meherin, Pinki Dhillon, Diana Williams, JenSvejda, Felicia Paust, Diane Deats, Kathy Rappaport, RonNaslund, Candy Cooper, Leslie Maltz, Keith Nichols,Sandy Rosenholtz, Vanessa Craig, Mark Sterling, DavidWilliams Paul Lawler, Tracy Myall, David Asplund,Colleen Langford and Dennis Zine... there are no words forthe gift your shared on that bright sunny day.

We will review at a wrap up meeting to see what thisfestival amounted to financially and how to improve uponthis event for next year. Congratulations…it was awonderful day. g

Wine Enthusiast Magazine Commends Local Woodland Hills Business

For Vision And IndustriousnessLocal business owner, Alex Guarachi, TGIC Importers,

Inc.’s, located on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills washonored this week by theprestigious Wine EnthusiastMagazine and was named WineEnthusiast Importer of the Year2010.

TGIC is an internationalimporter of premium wines. Thisprestigious award is a beacon oflight in a struggling economy. Whatmakes the award most meaningfulis its commendation of hard work, sweat and consistency. TGIC isindeed maintaining a healthy

financial position despite the current economic woes of otherbusinesses, however this award recognizes innovation, persistence and belief. TGIC created the Chilean andArgentinian wine categories in the US 25 years ago whennobody else would even consider importing wines from theseregions. It stuck with it, and it took 25 years but today thesecategories are hot and getting hotter and TGIC is at the heartof that trend.

This award commends good old-fashioned labor andcommitment, something we’re all learning are keycharacteristics any business owner needs to keep afloat intoday’s economy. The economic turndown we’re all livingthrough has shown us that although the kudos are not alwaysinstant, constancy and steadiness will prove rewarding in thelong-term and America needs more long-term businesses andless fair-weather ones.

We need examples of steadfast companies that choose to,and are capable of, enduring the bad times to create a strong, lasting entity that can create employment, grow business andeven expand in a hurting economy. Alex Guarachi is thatexample personified and TGIC is the mirror of his efforts.

TGIC was founded 25 years ago by Alex Guarachi and hassince grown into one of the nation’s leading innovators inwine imports. TGIC brings in wines from eleven countriesaround the globe, including Chile, Argentina, Australia,New Zealand and Spain, as well as representing anddistributing California Wines from Napa, Sonoma and PasoRobles. TGIC’s impressive portfolio includes Montes, SantaEma, Bodega Norton, Achaval Ferrer, Pascual Toso, Kaiken,Che Gaucho, Lo Tengo, Castillo de Monseran, GuarachiFamily Wines, Napa Angel, Star Angel, Omaka Springs andAndrew Peace. g
