How would you feel if someone called you a dog?

24 Then Jesus left and went away to the territory near the city of Tyre. He went into a house and did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not stay hidden. 25 A woman, whose daughter had an evil spirit in her, heard about Jesus and came to him at once and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Gentile, born in the region of Phoenicia in Syria. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus answered, "Let us first feed the children. It isn't right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." 28 "Sir," she answered, "even the dogs under the table eat the children's leftovers!" 29 So Jesus said to her, "Because of that answer, go back home, where you will find that the demon has gone out of your daughter!" 30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed; the demon had indeed gone out of her.

Gentile

Jesus is stating that the Jews must have access to his teaching first. The woman accepted what he said. Her reply made the point that the Jews were already being offered good news, and so Gentiles like her could now be offered it too. This showed she accepted Jesus' authority was God given and Jesus was impressed. Her faith was rewarded by the healing of her daughter.

1)The _________ were to have access to Jesus’ teaching first. Jesus was so impressed by the woman’s ___________ that he rewarded her with the ____________ of her daughter.

B/C – I can explain the meaning of the story.

Gentile

The Language Gentiles were vulgarly called dogs by many Jews…but Jesus uses the milder diminutive “pups”. He is also using an image that links two things sharing the same table – indicating that the Gentile will eventually share in his message.

B/C – I can explain the meaning of the story.

Jesus’ decision to leave Galilee and go into mainly Gentile territory (Tyre) might have been to avoid the authorities. It was not to conduct a mission to the Gentiles: Jesus’ mission was mainly to the Jews, to bring them back to God so that they could take the Gospel further afield.

Questions1.Why did Jesus want to leave Galilee?2.Why did Jesus not want to conduct a mission to the Gentiles?

B/C – I can explain the meaning of the story.

Jesus did not want news of his presence to spread, for fear that people would regard him as a wandering healer, some were ‘con men’.This could explain his apparent rudeness when the woman asked him to cure her daughter.

Questions3. What was Jesus worried people would regarded him as? 4. Why was he worried about this?
