About WhitireiaWhitireia Community Polytechnic (Whitireia) is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rate and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become a tertiary institution of choice for over 8,500 students (5,030 equivalent full-time students), who now study at one of our contemporary campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti and Christchurch.

In 2014, over 100 programmes of study are being offered to students, covering certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate levels. All programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry, to offer excellent applied qualifications.

The New Zealand Film and Television School is the only industry-run school of its kind in New Zealand. It is unique with its visiting tutor programme, where tutors come into the school direct from the industry to teach all there is to know about the film and television industry.Located in Wellington City, the Film School offers students a one year, full-time Certificate in Introduction to Film and Television Production. The aim of the programme is to turn out producers, directors and technical crews of the future; graduates who are well prepared to make a career in film and/or television.

If you are interested in a career in information technology, Computer Power Plus offers eight highly regarded information technology qualifications ranging from certificate to advanced diploma level. All are unique, flexible and provided in a self-paced learning environment. Students take control of their learning, learning at their own pace, with staff available to assist students reach their study goals. Students commit to attend regular sessions and each time they attend Computer Power Plus, they pick up exactly where they left off.

Instructors are dedicated, professional and experienced. A work placement service to students is offered by Computer Power Plus.

With campuses in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, Computer Power Plus is committed to students achieving real-world information technology qualifications.

Computer Power Plus is backed by a partnership between Whitireia New Zealand Limited and Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec).

The New Zealand Radio Training School is located in our Media Training Centre in Wellington City, and in our Auckland City campus. It offers students complete hands-on training in radio. Owned by Whitireia New Zealand Limited, the New Zealand Radio Training School offers study towards the National Certificate in Radio (Foundation Skills) and Diploma in Radio Journalism. These programmes cover all the things students need to know for a career in commercial radio including; copywriting, programming and producing for radio, running promotions, multimedia and video and live broadcasting. Students can choose from a range of electives including podcasting, documentary in radio, creative broadcasting or news package production and broadcast.

Students not only work in a classroom but also in purpose built studios designed to provide a complete radio experience. Professional tutors, all with comprehensive backgrounds in radio, offer students highly interactive learning opportunities through practical hands-on study.

The New Zealand Radio Training School keeps pace with the industry, and in-turn offers training in tune with industry requirements.

Whitireia provides a range of foundation education programmes in health science, social science, music and business.Study in these programmes helps students build language, literacy and numeracy skills while supporting a pathway to further study or employment.

Discretionary entrance for

STUDENTS UNDER 20 WILL NEED:

A minimum of 42 NCEA credits at Level 3 or higher made up of:

14 credits in an approved Level 3 or higher subject

14 credits in a second approved Level 3 or higher subject

14 credits in no more than two other approved Level 3 or higher subjects or domains

AND

8 credits at NCEA Level 2 or higher in English or te reo Māori with at least 4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing

14 credits at NCEA Level 1 or higher in mathematics or statistics and probability or pāngarau or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627

Students under 20 years of age who have NCEA credits at Level 2 (or above) but who do not meet the undergraduate degree requirements may apply for discretionary entrance. A supporting recommendation from the applicant’s school or workplace is required. Each application will be assessed on its merits and entrance will be granted at the discretion of the Faculty Dean.

To gain academic entrance into an undergraduate degree programme,

To either meet the academic under-graduate degree entry requirements or equivalent, or provide evidence of success in recent tertiary-level study. Previous work and life experience may be taken into account for mature students. Each application will be assessed on its merits and entrance will be granted at the discretion of the Faculty Dean.

Students who do not meet one of the above criteria may be directed towards a programme of study that will provide them with the entrance requirements on successful completion.

WHITIREIA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPSThe Whitireia Foundation is a registered charitable trust that aims to promote knowledge, interest and support for the educational purposes and activities of Whitireia students. restricted to students who live in a particular

geographical location. Eligibility will be based on

the address provided at the time of enrolment.

SECONDARY SCHOOL LEAVER FEES SCHOLARSHIPSWhitireia is pleased to offer Secondary School Leaver Fees scholarships to selected secondary schools. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and is to assist with tuition costs, for the first year of study on one of our multi-year diploma or degree programmes.

Entry criteria for these scholarships is as follows, and applicants must:

• Be over 16 years of age

• Be a school leaver from one of the selected schools

• Have been in full-time study for six months prior to making an application

• Be a New Zealand citizen or have permanent New Zealand residency

• Be accepted into a Whitireia multi- year diploma or degree programme

• Be enrolling in full-time study starting in the first semester of 2014, or selected degree or multi- year diploma programme starting in semester 2, 2014

PUBLISHING SCHOLARSHIPSScholarships are available for students studying publishing at Whitireia. These include the:

• Mason Publishing scholarship

• Te Reo Māori Publishing scholarship

PASIFIKA TRADES TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPSPasifika Trades Training scholarships are a government-led training initiative where scholarships are granted to members of the Pacific Island Commmunity.

Pasifika church ministers identify and nominate potential trade trainees and together with Whitireia, will select and mentor scholarship recipients.

Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships are being offered through Whitireia in 2014. These scholarships will be available to students who choose to study on a one year trades programme. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees.

INFORMATION & ENROLMENT CENTREOur Information & Enrolment Centre is the first point of contact for both prospective

and current students. Located at our campuses in Porirua and Auckland, this centre provides programme information, assistance with our enrolment process, student ID cards, careers advice and fee payment facilities.

LIBRARYOur Library provides access to a wide range of resources, including books, journals, audio-visual items, newspapers, many online databases, ebooks, study spaces and computers. Information skills training is available. A distance library service is provided to eligible students.

ACADEMIC SUPPORTStudents studying at our campuses in Porirua, Kāpiti, Wellington and by distance, can access study support through Poutama Academic Learning Services. Academic support is available in classes, small groups, from a peer tutor, one-to-one and through our online Moodle site. All services are delivered by professional staff and are free.

The study skills centre at our Auckland campus also provides learning advice and assistance to students at every level of study.

MAORI AND PACIFIC ACADEMIC SUCCESS CO-ORDINATORS Mo te tautoko me te awhi – staff are available to support Māori and Pacific students learning journey from an holistic approach.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESThe Academic Advisor (accessibility) works with students and staff to make reasonable accommodation for students with a disability.

COUNSELLING SERVICEA confidential, seven-day, 24-hour self-referral, counselling service is provided off-campus by Vitae. Vitae is a professional company that provides Whitireia students with access to a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand. Whitireia students are entitled to three free counselling sessions per year.

FINANCIAL SUPPORTConfidential budgeting advice is available. This service also provides information on grants, scholarships and emergency funding.

HEALTH SERVICEA health nurse is available by appointment at our campus in Porirua. This service is free. Other health services available at our Porirua campus include a

doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist and hearing therapist. There is a minimal cost for these services.

Medical appointments can be arranged for students studying at our campuses in Wellington, Kāpiti and Auckland.

CHILDCARE FACILITYA fully licensed childcare centre is located at our Porirua campus. Spaces are limited so an early enquiry is recommended if you are interested in using this facility. Call 04 237 7842 to find out more.

POLYSHOPPrescribed texts (at 10% discount) and second-hand texts are available at the on-site Polyshop at our Porirua campus. A full range of stationery at very competitive prices, greeting cards and overseas calling cards are also for sale. Other services include mobile phone recharging facilities and a drycleaning agency.

WORSHIPPING ON CAMPUSArrangements can also be made for worship at any one of our campuses.

CAREERS ADVICEOur Career Consultant is located at our Porirua campus within the Information & Enrolment Centre, and is available to provide careers support to students. To make an appointment call us on 0800 944 847.

HOW DO I APPLY TO ENROL?

Apply to enrol either in person or by post.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PROVIDE?

A completed Application to Enrol form, your birth certificate or passport plus any additional entry requirement information (such as a health declaration, references, police vetting, criminal convictions declaration, record of learning, academic transcripts/records) if applicable.

WHY DO WE ASK FOR YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE OR PASSPORT?

We need proof of your legal name, date of birth and citizenship or residency. If your name has changed, you will also need to provide proof of the change, e.g. a marriage certificate.

CAN I BRING A PHOTOCOPY OF MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE?

Yes, if it has been verified (signed) by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP), or kaumātua. We can also photocopy and verify your original documents for you.

HOW DO I GET A STUDENT LOAN OR ALLOWANCE?

Apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz. You should do this well before your programme starts so it is processed before your study begins.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CONFIRM MY ENROLMENT?

If you’ve brought or sent us everything we need, it will usually take between two and five working days.

WHEN DO I PAY MY FEES?

After you have been offered a place on your programme and you have confirmed your acceptance of this place, you can pay your fees.

HOW AND WHEN DO I GET MY STUDENT ID CARD?

After your enrolment has been completed, visit our Information & Enrolment Centre and we'll organise it for you. You will need a student ID card to print, photocopy, access the library, the computer networks and other student support services at Whitireia.

CAN I DECIDE TO WITHDRAW FROM PART OR ALL OF MY PROGRAMME OF STUDY?

If you change your mind before your programme of study starts, please contact us. You will need to complete a Withdrawal form.

Community & Other Education LinksPACIFIC COMMUNITY LIAISON

The Pacific Community Liaison team is responsible for engaging with our Pacific communities. Ethnic-specific staff liaise with Cook Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga and other Pacific community groups.

PORIRUA LANGUAGE PROJECT INCORPORATED

New settlers and adult New Zealanders are helped with English language skills and numeracy by volunteers through this project. For more information call 04 237 5283.

SCHOOLS LIAISON/YOUTH GUARANTEE

Our Schools Liaison/Youth Guarantee team promote Whitireia programmes in secondary schools and the community.

STAR/GATEWAY PROGRAMMES

Secondary school students are able to enrol in Whitireia STAR/Gateway and School Partnership programmes via their secondary school.
