Juicing business: four things the greatest business owners do relentlessly

The future belongs to the business owner. Never before have entrepreneurs been more empowered to follow their own path.

We manage business at a time where there is a plethora of information and not enough clarity. We read more, innovate more, and are lured in to follow our dreams and believe in our own abilities. Yet, the execution of those ideas often stalls or its impact is temporary.

The reality of owning a business is often very different to the intention. Business owners want more time, better outcomes and the money that comes from success.

It’s not enough to be passionate. It’s not enough to be driven and work hard. Great businesses are not great by accident, but by design.

There are four things that the greatest business owners do relentlessly to keep them on top of their business, rather than their business getting on top of them.

The challenge of taking time out of working in the business, to work on the businessSpeak to any expert who knows a lot about improving business performance and a pre-requisite to business success is for the business owners to regularly spend time focusing on the business, rather than always staying busy working in the business.

And this is true. When a business does this well, they will:

Achieve greater sales and profits

Better deliver on their promises to their clientele

Continue to improve on what they do really well

Fix what they do poorly

Keep up with the evolving needs of their industry and customer base, and maintain their relevance (which is directly related to maintaining or growing their EBIT)

Achieve their dream of living the life they want, powered by a business they love

Unfortunately, this is not as simple as it sounds.

While business owners know that repeating the same habits will lead to the same outcomes, they are also time poor and changing habits is difficult.

Ultimately, taking time to work on the business is critical. The question is how?

Spend your ‘on’ time wiselyHere’s four tips to bear in mind:

1. Do it once, then do it often. Set aside significant time at least once a year to reflect on everything you’re doing and plan out what ideas or projects you will execute throughout the year. Then, on a monthly basis, take a smaller amount of time to reflect on how you’re tracking against targets, view what’s working and what might need adjustment.

2. Don’t overthink it. Whilst doing this well means investing more than a fleeting thought, it doesn’t mean spending days on end trying to build theoretical plans that are not implemented.

3. Look outside your own business. Take inspiration from others, stay abreast of new ideas and technologies that are being created by others, and learn from them. This means reading, attending conferences and online programs, and/or bringing in others to help.

4. Follow a proven process. Use tools and processes that are proven to work.

For example, this process can take four steps:

Step one - Clarify your vision for the business.

Step two - Critical thinking. Conduct a thorough and honest reflection of strengths, weaknesses and the opportunities and threats in your external environment.

Step three - Document your plan to capture strategy and actions over the next twelve months (in both financial and qualitative terms).

Step four - Track your success. Don’t wait a whole year to review progress, because it will be too late to make any changes if the business is off track. Stay nimble and achieve more. Great businesses know their numbers and they review them regularly.

External support and help?Of course, having someone to help with growing and designing your business, who’s not emotionally connected, will work wonders. A business adviser with knowledge and experience, and who deeply understands your business and personal objectives, can be invaluable.
