Planning commission looking to future development

As density along the Wasatch Front continues to reach north-ward into Box Elder County, dis-cussions about Transit-Oriented Development (T.O.D.) are heat-ing up as the need for planning becomes imminent. City Planner Jay Aguilar invit-ed Cory Shupe of Blue Line De-signs to share some of his expe-

riences with the commission at the Thursday, March 19, meet-ing. Shupe has been involved with many similar projects, in-cluding Payson City’s T.O.D. as well as the City Creek develop-ment in Salt Lake City. He com-plimented Willard’s Planning Commission for their forward-looking attitude and desire for quality and a well-thought-out community. He also believes in the preservation of what Wil-lard is, which he says is “...driv-ing along [Highway] 89 and not having driveways, but instead, orchards.” Shupe then picked the brains of the commission members to find out just what Willard citi-zens hope to have here. “We’d like more openness, such as walking trails, less soccer patch-es, more contiguous parks,” said Toby Nishikawa. Commission member Dave Ormond also hopes to see more large, manicured parks with grass. Shupe encouraged the commission to consider cluster-ing homes closer together which allows a developer to create a larger open space. Following Shupe’s presenta-tion, Aguilar presented a slide-show highlighting some impor-tant trends in Utah, including the fact that Utah is the fifth fastest growing state in the nation, with a population which will double in 40 years. Besides planning for more walkable districts to bring communities together and cut down on travel pollution, trans-portation planning is critical.

He then explained that a Die-sel Mobile Unit, a smaller model of the Frontrunner, will service Box Elder County. Because of the smaller size, and the type of county Box Elder is, stops or stations may be as little as two miles apart. The presentation was then halted by Chairman Del Fredde to read a couple of citizens’ let-ters to the commission. The first, from Ed and June Summers, ex-plained their concerns regarding the quarry Joel Murray hopes to start which included Holmes Canyon and their water source, safety issues, dust, noise, and visual impact. The second letter was one that the Murrays had shared with their immediate neighbors explaining their type of operation, their hoping to ei-ther change the zoning or to se-cede their acreage from the city limits, and their desire to not alarm neighbors or give the idea that they’re running a gravel op-eration when they’re not. City Council member Mitch Zundel is organizing this year’s Easter Egg Hunt which will be held on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. in the Willard park area. Monetary donations are being sought to buy candy and prizes and can be taken to the city of-fices. The Fourth of July Committee met for the first time and, ac-cording to Ron Burningham, is “pumped, excited and stoked.” They’re are building on the suc-cesses of last year and discuss-ing new ideas. Heidi Smith’s girls who were attending with her were asked what their fa-vorite activities from last year’s celebrations. Kaylee’s favorite was the dunk tank, while Tawni thought the wrestling was hilari-ous. Michelle Bowden, who has headed up the youth baseball during past years, has earned a hearty “thanks” along with all

the other volunteers who have helped her. She will no longer be able to fill this role. For this rea-son, volunteers are needed for a committee to organize and run the youth baseball league. The committee will select coaches, teams, schedule games, arrange for umpires, and make arrange-ments for concessions. The league is funded by sign-up fees and concession sales. If you are interested, please contact the Willard City Office at 435-734-9881. Willard, Perry and Brigham women were treated to a multi-stake visit by Sylvia H. Allred, First Counselor in the General Relief Society Presidency, at the Perry Stake Center on March 14. Using scripture stories as mod-els for personal ministry, she instructed the women on taking to heart their ability to bless and help many others during their lifetimes. Music was supplied by a choir comprised of women from the Brigham City Stake. Sincere condolences are of-fered to Alvin and Laura Wells upon the death of their daugh-ter, Marie. Her funeral was held at the Lorin Farr Fifth Ward in Ogden on Friday, March 20. For Seniors, the lunch menu for Tuesday, March 31 is: taco salad, corn muffin, tropical fruit salad and cook’s choice dessert.

Spring brings calves and chores to tiny town out west

Jim and Starr Mitchell are ex-cited to report the sprouting of leaves up through the ground of many of their spring flowers. Some of their trees are showing small bud swellings, too. They have been busy trimming tree branches next to power lines “just to be safe” as Starr says. Orson and Jeannette spent Friday after work until Sunday going to and from St. George.

They enjoyed visiting Jeannette’s son Luke Houston and Jean-nette’s cousin Marcia. “All are healthy, happy, and comfort-able,” Orson says. They brought a car home with them, and are now thinking of gardening. “It’s a good time to plant peas,” they say. Emily Wilson had a super all-nighter in Ogden with her church friends. They enjoyed swim-ming, ice skating, volleyball, etc. They had a very nice spiritual talk to start things off. Pam en-joyed herself too -- “quiet!”, she says succinctly. On Friday Pam took her father to Salt Lake City to fly home to Washington after his visit here. Kaye Draper says she doesn’t get bored. It’s no wonder as she goes to her job on Monday middays and square dancing at night. On Wednesday and Friday she played bingo. On Thursday, she played Mah Jong at the Liberty Senior Center then went to lunch with friends at the Coachman Restaurant. Sat-urday morning at 10 a.m. she helped cook and serve breakfast at her apartment complex. That evening she drove to the Energy Solutions Arena to see Disney on Ice. She got to sit close to the rink itself. On Sunday she drove out to West Valley City with Jane Butcher to have dinner and cards with the Bolten family. Boyd Udy is looking foward to the world championship cutter finals beginning on March 21. He will then prepare for cutting and reining shows for spring and summer. He is hoping to find time for his new saddle after so many little things are finished. Cleo Petit reports she and Gary are about half done with the calves and their mothers that they check on everyday. They found new ones on Mon-day and Friday. “It’s just a plain old week,” Cleo says. Gary is still shoveling snow from the last storm.

Winnie Richman and friend Carolyn Carter drove to Clinton to Roberts Arts and crafts where they worked on their latest can-vasses. Winnie’s is rather long and features a covered wagon without the cover and will in-clude some people, a first for Winnie. Winnie delivered her news-paer articles to Brigham and Tremonton then, dah-dah, stayed home the rest of the week! “I read, rested, chored, wrote, and sang in our ward choir on Sunday,” she said. “We also en-joyed seeing Clynn’s nephew and new family on Sunday.”
